S: Why don't you put him down on the list of people that meets on that subject and
then he can come on some things. I would also suggest to you that you put Eberle
down on that.
K: Alright.
S: There are a lot of things involving our trade relationships around the world
for which this has implications.
K: Right. I can tell you there's nothing I don't think that Dunlap is qualified for.
S: Dunlap is extraordinarily talented. He's also totally reliable.
K: And unselfish.
S: And unselfish. He's a very very good man.
K: Frankly, in my mind he would be a good possibility to replace you. I don't
know how much he knows about financial things.
S: He knows plenty. He learns, he understands things. Anyway, I think it would
be good to involve him in this effort. Next item, and I'm sort of on two sides
of this issue. Yesterday Schmidt, after we got through with our negoations, made
a comment about the energy conference along the lines that he hoped we wouldn't
let it drop because he felt some momentum was gotten up and he said if you have
problems like the Foreign Ministers taking that initiative. He said I was
distressed by that and he said if I had known ahead of time that they were going to
do that I could have headed it off, and would have. At the same time he says he
hopes that we don't drop the initiative because then it will set him back and others
because it will just be described as a gimick of some kind that we used for either
domestic purposes or some other purpose, but it wasn't really something to be
taken seriously.
K: We won't drop it.
S: I think as I know you agree, he's worth paying attention to.
K: He's our key man.
S: I think that we need to think that over and in that connection it seems to me
we need to have some way of making it public, that we are having these discussions
with the Saudis and the Iranians, or we will. So that they don't seem to be an act
of bad faith, assuming we're carrying on in the energy conference. That is to set
it properly:- That's not easy to do, I know, but it seems
