TELECON
General Haig/Secretary Kissinger
March 20, 1974
6:10 PM
H: Henry.
K: Hello A1.
H: How are you doing?
K: OK.
H: Good. I'm returning your call.
K: Oh, you're returning my call. That wasn't all that important. The French
of course picked up exactly what I was afraid they would. They're putting it all
over their radio and television.
H: Sure they did.
K: Have you seen it?
H: No, but I knew it was inevitable.
K: They say, one, he was very friendly to France, so there is no problem with
France. Two, he confirmed what they've always said that we've no alternative
but to keep our troops there. Third, SO what's all the screaming about.
H: The way to handle that is, is that's not what he said.
K: Exactly. That's the line we're taking. I'm stopping in Bomn on the way to
Russia, just for an hour.
H: You're not going to kiss and make up are you.
K: A1, I don't know what you guys think. I want to isolate the French, I'm going
to be brutal.
H: Good.
K: It took me two months to get this show down started, I'm not going to pull off.
H: I'm only kidding you. You're losing you're sense of humor.
K: Well, you sound like Ziegler. He's been giving me strategic advice.
