TELCON
Sen. Cranston/Sec. Kissinger
March 19, 1974
2:15 p. m.
K: How are you?
C: Very good, How are you?
K: O.K.
C: I appreciate your calling. I am one of the sponsors of the Jackson
Amendment. I have been troubled by it all the time. I know it has given
you some problems. I see you have been negotiating with the people who are
the toughest to negotiate with.
K: That is the truth.
C: I would be delighted if you are interested to chat with you about what
compromise might be acceptable and see if I could be of help.
K: That is very nice of you. Should we do it after I have been in the
Soviet Union.
C: That is probably the best.
K: I will be in a better position to know what is obtainable.
C: I would like it to be a private meeting with you because it is somewhat
risky for me but I want to do it because I know it is important.
K: That is real generous of you and I guarantee you we will have a drink
here quietly and no one will know about it.
C: I am quietly exploring the waters up here and I think iti is possible
to figure out something and I will devote every effort.
K: I appreciate that very much and I will call you when I get back from the
Soviet Union.
C: Thank you very much.
K: Bye.
