Senator Sparkman/Secretary Kissinger
June 7, 1974
3:56 PM
S: I want to welcome you back.
Thank you. I hope the reports I read our correct that you're
going to take the Chairmanship.
S: I look forward to it.
K: I look forward to working very closely with you.
S: The same here and I want to commend you on the tremendous job you did
over there. Are you rested? I don't see how you can be.
K: I m getting there.
S: I apologize for calling you about this but a bunch of people who operate in
my state asked me to do it. I understand that they have asked for an appointment
with you. I don't know whether it's any special time or not. They're a bunch
of aluminum XXXXX companies. There's a man named John Harper, representing
Alcoa; Richard Reynolds, representing Reynolds metal company, Cornell
Feyer, representing Kaiser Aluminum Company, John Place, representing
Anaconda Copper Company and then two companies which I don't have the
names of the representati ves is Alcan, I think that's a Canadian Aluminum
Company and then the Revere, I think is a copper company. All of these
operate in my state, I believe, but anyhow they asked me to call and just recomme
that they be given an appointment with you for which I under stnfdd they applied.
I know nothing about, I won't make it clear, I know nothing about what they
want, but I presume it has to do with trade.
K: I would suspect maybe bauxite.
S: Oh, maybe.
K: That's what I w ould suspect.
S: That's probably what it is. And as I say, I know nothing about, they XX
didn't tell me, but they did tell me that they had asked for a chance to sit down
and talk with you and he asked me if I would put in a word for them and that's
all I'm doing.
K: OK. I appreciatestxthis and I will do my very best to see them.
