The President - page 2
N: Which are not insignificant, let's face it.
K: Well exactly, Mr. President, if we got a breakthrough on SALT which will
get negotiated later on, that's not bad.
N: That's right. But I mean having the threshhold of the ABM thing, is an
accomplishment of itself.
K: Of course. I don't find much nitpicking about the trip anymore.
N: Scott said the committee was pretty well set, they didn't badger you with
other streneous matters.
K: No, I don't think this was the time to do it.
N: Good. The Committee was, in XXIX other words, pretty supportive all
the way around, then.
K: The Committee was very good. It was a very good session.
N: That's good.
K: And it was all on the summit, a little bit on NATO and Fulbright, when he
came out, made a very strong statement, the press tells me that others as they
were x coming out made good statements.
N: Well, we have to understand this little flap on the nuclear thing -- they have
to find something txxxx to pick on so they -- and people just -- it's such a
the trouble is such a darn XXXXXXXX mistery, you know, we have to remember
Eisenhower talked about atoms for peace; way back there we were going to share
it with the world and gave the same speech, and Kennedy was for it. That's what
this is all about. How do you do it otherwise? Isn't that what it's about.
K: Exactly. It's the only way you can control relations in this period.
N: How about our Israeli friends. Are they still boxxxxx bombing?
K: No, they stopped it. We made a sharp protest and they sent us a message
this afternoon -- this evening. In fact, Dinitz was just in here to tell me they
had stopped it.
N: That's good. It should, in their own interest. We're not asking them to do
something harmful for them. We're asking because if they go too far, we'll get
one hell of a reaction here. People now are on the mountain top; they want a
peaceful settlement in the east.
K: No question about it. I think they're coming on very strong.
