Javits - page 2
J: Well, I think you have a right to insist on that. I think that if the matter
is handled, you know, the one year basis which we discussed, I don't see really
why he should complain about that.
K: Right.
J: I gathered from you yesterday that you're at some point, you have to cut
loose from him.
K: I'm beginning to have serious doubts about Jackson. You know, what he's now
put out about the SALT agreement is SO mischievous and SO wrong that I'm
beginning to think he's just out for a confrontation.
J: And he just has to be taken on.
K: Yes.
J: Well, you're not going to make that decision until you get back.
K: Certainly not. And not without full consultation with you.
Gelb called me
J: Well, you're very kind. This bothered me very deeply, they called me /
and said I just want to read you my story, he said, I know you won't say anything
about it, SO he told me what he was going to say and I said OK, and he said
obviously you don't wanted to be quoted. I said, obviously I don't and that was
the end of that. He didn't call me yesterday, Marilyn Berger called me but I
told her nothing. Did she write anything this XIXIXXIXIX mar
ning?
K: I haven't seen it.
J:
Well, it's very unfortunate, I suppose it was too much to hope that it should
be xxxxxxhendled in the way that we hoped it would, but alright, I think the only
think thing to do is leave it this way.
K: Look Jack, I will do nothing in this area to change my course without you.
thing
J: OK. Now the other xxixixx A wanted to ask you is about Europe. I had a talk
with Hartman yesterday and I'm hoping to see Wilson, Smith, and governmen
Of course now with this declaration it puts it on a much stronger frame, but I
fathexx gather it's still a pretty operation. Is therex anything specific or
particular I should have in mind.
K: Jack can I call you, I was on the way to the hospital when you called me.
J: When can I call you?
K: Tomorrow afternoon. END
