The President/Mr. Kissinger (Tape) (11:10pm) Wednesday, evening, February 17, 1971 -5- - P: Did you have a good talk with him? K: Yeah; we had a good talk, and I assured him of your interests and that we would do anything we could, and we'll have a good relation- ship. P: Okay, Henry. K: Right, Mr. President. Well, this was quite a day, and I think P. Yeah, and I've got a tough one tomorrow. I'm going to have Vogt give the Democratic Senators a 10-minute thing. K: Right. We ran through it. P: I told him to make it 10 minutes. K: That's right. He's a good fellow, and he'll do it very well. P: I'd just as well he stick it out there straight to these bastards. The southerners are all with us, I think. K: And the others don't really say very much, and after all, I think this is now the toughest period probably in terms of the anti- aircraft fire we are facing in another week or so when they are sitting astride all of these roads. Well, they are sitting across three of them now, and we are not sure we are going to go after that fourth one because that's about 30 miles further over, and we've got Laotian battalions operating against it already and all our air power, all of which, as you know, can now concentrate on one road where previously they had to cover four. They've got to hitsomething sometime, particularly as the traffic now has to be in the open. P: Well, just get those B-26's out there. K: Right, Mr. President. P: Those things can fly at night, too, can't they? K: I'm pretty sure -- certainly if they are lined up with the sensors on the ground. P: So I assume they re-equip them for all. K: Oh, yes.
