TELECON (Tape) Colonel Kennedy Brought in 3/22, page 4 They believe they have defeated the top enemy units, and they have. The J-2 and the J-3 actually did all the briefing. They said it's too soon to fully assess it. It'11 be several months before we know how fully we've upset the situation, but we've upset a short-term schedule and objective, disrupted logistics, pre-empted their plans for future aggressive action into South Vietnam and Cambodia. And they say One of them said the supplythrough-put this year is only one-fifth of last year. I don't know how they came to such precision when we've been working at it for a week. HK: Well, that's the official figure. Okay, good. K: Well, we'll get all this stuff summarized. HK: Well, are you going to have some of this material ready for me so that it I can get it to the President? As long as I get/ to him by noon tomorrow. K: Oh, yes; now we've got something on the figures. We are not exactly sure -- you know, you wanted to look at it. We've got it all ready. Maybe I could just give you a feel for it and if you've got some thoughts, we can do some more work on it. HK: Like what? K: Tanks nearly 100. This is the first large-scale use of tanks by the North Vietnamese and resulted in destruction of an estimated one-third of their total tank force. Ammunition -- more than 550, 000 rounds, including an estimated 3500 large rocket rounds, many more large rocket rounds than were captured during the Cambodian operation last year. HK: Well, why don't we say how many more -- three times as many? K: We can get a figure. I know we can. More than 4500 individual and 1600 crew-served weapons, most of which were captured from NVA fighting units. [End of tape]
