P:
Right. Let me say I just know when you get in a PR battle, by God
it doesn't make any difference what the facts are, you win the PR
battle. Now on this one we know how it's going to come out, now
its got to come out and the thing to do is to win the battle.
K:
Exactly.
P:
But we have got to be very careful that we don't in any way destroy
Abrams credibility or my own so I'll handle it in a way that I'll give
the press -- sure they have got a right to report all these things but
gentlemen the important thing to know is how does it all come out in
the end.
K:
If you stick to that line, Mr. President, I think that you will be fully
P:
That's all that matters.
K:
I wouldn't say that it was all exactly as planned.
P:
Oh, it wasn't. Nothing is as planned, you don't know what the enemy --
this was a operation that depended on what reaction we received. It
was to accomplish certain things, it accomplished those things.
K:
Exactly. And in fact what happened is we inflicted more casualties
than we thought we could -- I mean this I wouldn't go into great detail
on and we took more and we stayed a little less long but the total
impact is roughly what we anticipated.
P:
Well, I'll work it out by 3 o'clock Monday the things I have to work
out. Now in the meantime though -- when does Abrams' briefing begin,
when will he be giving it?
K:
He will be giving it 6 o'clock our time tomorrow morning.
P:
So it will hit the Monday morning papers.
K:
Right.
P:
Well, the Sunday morning papers it will all --
K;
No, it won't hit the Sunday morning papers.
P:
Yeah, I know. The Sunday morning papers will all hit the line in
the Saturday afternoon papers and they will
That's all
right, let them have their day.
