TELECON (Tape)
Admiral Moorer
Brought in 3/22/71 -- page 3
K:
The other side.
M:
The other side, yes. Just about everything they've got and I think that in
the interest of cutting down caches, they try to do it without breaking up their
organization, their tactical units and at the same time inflict maximum damage
to the other guy in getting out so that they don't get anybody caught out on a limb.
I think once you start that, then that's the end of the operation.
K:
Right, right, right.
M:
I think
K:
How does he foresee them coming out, over what period of time?
M:
This operation down Highway 9 I think will take another 4-5 days at least.
Now the Marines that are down in the South, they will be probably working in
that area for a long time so when you say out in the sense of
K:
You mean along Route 922?
M:
Down in that base area 611 I think, yeah. Then back towards what they
call the Laos salient. Now, I think that these guys have got two options --
I
mean the enemy.
K:
Yeah.
M:
I think that they have got the option of kinda fighting at our heels, nipping
at our heels and SO on with a few tanks
and so on. I think that would be
a sign of weakness on their part. The other thing they could do since they are
there, try to put everything they have got together and move into say against
Khe Sanh or something like that. I don't think they have the capability of that
because people out there are looking -- ready for this in other words and this
was I think again would chew them up pretty heavily. I think now that they are
bound to be and Abrams says that they are -- the words he used "badly hurt"
he said, "badly hurt". And SO I think when the smoke clears you are going to
see these people have lost a hell of a lot of flexibility and lost a hell of a lot of
time.
K:
Well, I have no question that the operation was a plus, I have no doubt
about that at all. And a big plus, the problem is how are we going to handle it
in the next few weeks when the jackals start screaming.
M:
Yeah, well, we'll just scream back.
