TOAST
TALKING POINTS
1.
Prime Minister Meir has spoken today of common values we and
the people of Israel share. They have little to do with politics or
religion--much to do with the fact that in broad terms we share a
common experience. Our guest's life is a striking example.
2.
But common experience and common values do not mean that
the leaders of two nations will bring common solutions to common
problems. Each will see those problems from his or her own perspective.
Identical views are not essential to work together toward common goals.
3.
Each of us faces a similar problem--how to end a war. What the
US is doing in the Mid-East is to try, from its different perspective, to
develop a political alternative to continuing war.
4.
There is no question that the United States and Israel have a common
interest in peace. Both want to turn to the works of peace.
5.
I want to recall the story of how the Prime Minister as a girl in
Milwaukee helped organize a group to collect children's pennies to buy
schoolbooks for children without money to buy their own.
6.
That is what Prime Ministers and Presidents should spend their
time worrying about--the works of peace so that children have the oppor-
tunity to look forward to productive lives.
7.
Strong women have shaped the history of Israel. After Deborah,
"the land had rest forty years. 11 May history repeat.
8.
In honoring the Prime Minister's leadership and expressing the
hope for peace, a toast to the President of Israel.
