The President recalled that the Emperor had received him, as Vice President,
and Mrs. Nixon at the Palace in Tokyo in 1953, and said that the Government
and people of Japan had welcomed him warmly on that and each of his six
subsequent visits to Japan as a private citizen.
The Emperor said that he remembered their first meeting well, and
reiterated his hope that this visit would also contribute to further good will
between both countries.
The President also recalled meeting the Crown Prince and Princess briefly
in Hawaii in 1953, and expressed his pleasure at receiving Prince and
Princess Hitachi at the White House recently. He said that Mrs. Nixon
had also enjoyed having them to tea.
The Emperor expressed appreciation for his kind welcome to the Crown
Prince and Princess earlier and for the cordial hospitality recently extended
by the President and Mrs. Nixon to Prince and Princess Hitachi, who had
informed him of their pleasure upon returning to Japan. He reaffirmed his
belief in the importance of friendly relations based on mutual good will
between both nations.
The President agreed that these are important and expressed his belief
that the Emperor's visit would contribute to strengthening them.
At the Consul General's residence, the President, noting his pleasure at
this historic but brief first visit, said that he and the American people
hoped that they would be able to welcome the Emperor and Empress in
Washington, and that the Emperor and Empress would be able on such an
occasion to see more of the United States.
The Emperor responded that he would be deeply honored to be able to visit
Washington and see more than a corner of the United States. He considered
it desirable to do so.
In response to the President's question, the Emperor reviewed his overseas
itineary, which included visits to Denmark, Belgium, Holland, France,
England, West Germany, and Switzerland.
The President emphasized that the great industrial nations of the world,
the United States, those in Europe, and Japan, which is also a great
economic power, should cooperate in many areas for the benefit of mankind.
He expressed the hope that organizations be created to promote such
cooperation not just in space, but also in other areas of science and medicine
so that discoveries in any one country could be shared by all.
