Dear
:
Now that I have had time to reflect on the results of the
election, I realize our victory would not have been possible without
the support of the best campaign finance organizations in American
political history.
I only wish I had the opportunity to express my appreciation
personally to all of those who contributed SO generously to our cause.
Since that is not possible, the best way I can express my gratitude is
to do everything in my power in the years ahead to see that our new
administration makes a record which will be worthy of the dedicated
support of those who helped to make our victory possible.
I know that you join with me in the hope that, as a result of
that record, we shall all be able to look back to the Eampaign of 1968
and say that we played a part at one of the critical turning points in
history in providing the new leadership that America needed, and, in

In an election as close as this one, a number
of factors can make a difference between victory and defeat. I, personally,
am convinced that one of the major factors which could have tipped the
scales in my favor was the support I received from the majority of the
nation's newspapers.
I only wish I had the opportunity to express my appreciation

In the years ahead, I realize there will be occasions when you
may not agree with the policies of the new administration. I want you to
know that I will appreciate receiving the benefit of your criticism as well
as your praise. I believe it is vitally important for the new administration
to seek out the best thinking of the nation's opinion leaders in finding
solutions to the critical problems with which we are confronted. Above all,
I want ours to be an open administration - open to new ideas - listening and
respecting those who disagree with us as well as those who agree with us.
May I take this opportunity to extend on behalf of Mrs. Nixon (Pat)
and myself our very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Re the card - with family picture - which is to be sent to people who
sent in messages of congratulations (other than those who will require
a specialized personal letter)
I would not have the "Bring us Together" message on it.
I do not have to see it again -- but make up a mock-up of it with the
family picture and then at the bottom of the picture the caption should
indicate -- "Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, November 6, 1968" -- or
something like that.
Do not use the term DEAR FRIEND - or anything of that sort - - do not
use a salutation.
Then in the script type as per sample below -- the following message:
I want you to know how deeply grateful I am
for the message you sent to me after our election victory.
The expressions of confidence and good wishes I have
received from people all over the world will be a great
source of strength and encouragement as I undertake
the responsibility of providing new leadership for
America in the years ahead.

included. I am open to persuasion if everyone else thinks it is necessary
to have something of that sort.
