THE SERMON: and He took a child SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS February 9, 1969 Race Relations Sunday Mark 9:30-37 The picture of children from various races playing together immediately appeals to us. The hard fact of later racial prejudice is absent and a joyous delight prevails. As the disciples discussed who was the greatest, Jesus placed a child in their midst. He spoke of receiving such a child and thereby receiving him. To receive a child is to receive also his racial blindness and radiant openness to delight in others. The big question is not "Who's the greatest?" It is "Who has received the spirit of a child that destroys human barriers and brings delight?" HOPE FOR HOUSTON For thousands of poor in the city of Houston and Harris County, Texas, the past century of increasing technological advance has resulted only in increased exclusion and unconcern on the part of society. Re- cently, a concerned Methodist minister, the Reverend Earl E. Allen, tried a new way of dealing with the problem of these Texas poor. Dissatisfied with a local, government-sponsored anti-poverty agency's ability to deal effectively with problems of the destitute, Mr. Allen re- signed his position as agency director in order to redirect his efforts as president of HOPE Development, Inc. (The initials stand for: Human, Organizational, Political, and Economic.) Now speaking for many of Houston's quarter of a million Black citizens, Allen tells people that all alone they can do little to help themselves or their fellowmen. Only together can they achieve their goals: the end of deprivation and poverty, the beginning of justice, equal opportunities and real freedom. Only to- gether can they exert the power necessary to control their lives. For many of Houston's citizens, HOPE Development, Inc. repre- sents a positive and powerful force for long-needed change. Both the United Church of Christ and the United Presbyterian Church have aided HOPE through contributions to IFCO, the Inter-religious Foundation for Community Organization, which has provided $90,000 for implemen- tation for several badly-needed programs and projects in Houston. PHOTO: U. U.S. DEPT. OF HEALTH. EDUCATION AND WELFARE This message is prepared for joint use by the United Presbyterian Church and the United Church of Christ. UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST SUNDAY BULLETIN 1969 CHRISTUS DESIGN 2269 THE WASHINGTON WHITE HOUSE Schedule FYI 2/11/69 Joseph Neff called today from Palm Beach and said that he wants to plan to have a birthday party for ELMER BOBST for his 85th birthday on December 16. Needless to say, he wants you and Mrs. Nixon to attend. I, of course, told him it was impossible to know what might be going on at that time but I knew you might want to have Elmer come here -- but that we could not work anything out at this early date. Kr rmwoods do 10 mg owe smithy will try for Elema to here- February 5, 1969 TO: Mrs. Nixon FROM: The President I also would like to have some family pictures in my bedroom. Would you pick out the best ones of yourself, Tricia, David and Julie. February 5, 1969 TO: Mrs. RN FROM: The President In the family dining room what I want is not Musak but I would like to pipe in the music from the Fisher which is right off the bedroom. I believe a couple of amplifiers could be put on either side of the fireplace in attractive end tables. If this can't be done, then I am inclined to do some thing else than have the Musak. It is not a particularly attractive instrument and the music is not frankly what I like. Having the amplifiers tied in to the central sound system gives us a chance to choose what the music will be. DONALD M. KENDALL 500 PARK AVENUE NEW YORK CITY 5th February, 1969 n.m. My dear Mr. President, As I told you after the Election, I would not write you a letter until after the Inauguration because after waiting this long I had to make sure it actually came true. First, I want to congratulate you on what undoubtedly will go down in history as the greatest political campaign of all time. The planning and the strategy were masterful, and the execution brilliant. One of the outstanding features of the campaign was the format that was used for the media, which brought out warmth and compassion so that the public could see and feel what those of us who knew you were aware of. It has been a long, hard, uphill struggle, and I greatly admire the courage, the strength and leader- ship that you displayed during this period of your life, and I will always be grateful for having had an opportunity to participate. Kindest personal regards Sincerely, Den The Honorable Richard M. Nixon President of the United States The White House Washington, D.C. Copies sent to Peter Flanigan file 1665 NORTH OCEAN BLVD. Sincerely, Atcts J. D. Stetson Coleman February 6, 1969 PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL Mr. Peter Flanagan Dillon, Read & Company Wall Street Station New York, N. Y. Attention Miss McFadden Dear Peter: Can't reach you by shore-to-ship phone at the boat and I don't think it wise to put this on the air. 1711 com- mit the unpardonable political sin and put it in writing so it can be mailed, or will be there on your return. After our talk on Walter Thayer for Republi can National Finance Chairman on Saturday night I phoned you Sunday some reservations that had come to mind. By Monday night these reservations had become full blown facts and I tried to reach you but to no avail. Tuesday morning you had slipped anchor. I conveyed certain facts to your secretary, Miss McFadden, in case you called. By today, Thursday, I am convinced if Thayer is confirmed as Finance Chairman you will hurt the President, the Party, yourself and the country People will think R. N. approved the appointment. If confirmation is forth- coming practically all/of the fund sources I work on will shift to Bob Wilson in the House and George Murphy in the Senate for conservative candidates in those two houses. The National Committee will not get a dime from these sources with Thayer as Chairman. Why? Outside of New York, Thayer has no following and he really doesn't know the people who contribute outside of New York State. He is not regarded as a money man. During the last campaign this was brought out when he assembled the Rockefeller money raisers and one by one they found some reason to bow out. You can get the story from Stans or Milbank. Let's take Stane as a Chairman. He has courage, vision, tact, patience, a facile mind and above all, a willingness to work that knows no bounds. I cheerfully did chores for him I swore I never would do again after the 164 can- paign. Manry's fealty to Nixon is a lesson in loyalty. Mr. Peter Flanagan - page 2 In his current job he has got to step on some toes shortly but I'll wager it will be done positively and constructive- ly. Not once did I see a negative decision on his part in the entire campaign. Everything was positive. My ex- perience goes back to Guy Gabrielson as Republican National Chairman. Do you remember him? One thing us old fellows have on you is age. I think Maury Stans the best of the R.N.F. Chairmen I have known. Why? Well, he didn't try to hog it all and when he made a mistake he admitted it quickly and rectified it rapidly. I cannot say enough for this man. He is a real leader and he assembled the best team yet simply by using the material, the names the or- ganization and the methods devised in 1964, mainly by Jerry Milbank, Bill Higgins and others. He assembled a terrific team and my hat's off to him in every way. I don't believe Theyer could keep the organization and I don't think he could assemble one anywhere near it. Without consulting Stans I bet he would pick George Champion every time over Walter Thayer. Chamy ion knows the entire country. As a life long banker, the entire donating pub- lic immediately attaches campaign funds to his name and he can get funds from every segment. For example take Mary Runnels from whom Charlie Barr and I ollected funds for campäigns you never heard of such as Woods for Sheriff of Chicago. I estimate Mary has given the Republican party over half a million dollars in her lifetime. I am certain she would contribute through Champion. I am not so certain she would through Thayer. I think George could keep a good part of the organization and if not, build a strong one. At any rate, it is my understanding George has agreed to take the job 11 offered. In my humble opinion this would be the correct appointment of the two. If Thayer is a good soldier he will accept the verdict no matter what and turn to for the good of R. N., the GOB and the country. If not, well he shouldn't have gotten the job anyway. After all, he is a Whitney man. Nobody knows what he really believes because the public thinks he reflects Jock's philosophy and views. Whitney was Scroll and Key 1926 and I was S&K 1927. Mr. Peter Flanagan - page2 He hasn't changed one iota since college. Personally they are wonderful people but politically in the minds of the public they represent an element unknowingly undermining this country. This is my opinion on the subject for what it is worth. Hope you had a restful trip, you surely earned it. Ex- peet to see you and Bridget shortly and certainly during the next quail season. Affectionately J. D. Stetson Coleman February 19, 1969 TO: John Ehrlichman FROM: Rose Mary Woods RE: The President's Insurance Program I have sent the original of the attached invoice up to the Andrews office for payment. However, I thought you might like to have someone look over the attached folders on conversion if there is any interest in the life insurance. I believe you mentioned you felt RN did not have enough insurance. On the other hand, you may well have taken care of this with John Krehbiel or someone else. If there is no interest -- please just toss this memo and the attached material in the wastebasket! THANKS.
