Ogden to RN regarding gifts\nsent to Ogden's family. 2 pgs.\nTuesday, October 13, 2009\nPage 1 of 1\nRM W\nAugust 7, 1969\nTelephone call from Elmer Bobst\nIn response to a message the B OSS gave to Maury Stans\nbefore he left on the trip, Maury called me and I have become\nHonorary Chairman of the campaign in New Jersey for the\nelection of William Cahill as Governor and also to be the\nhonorary chairman for the dinner. I have gotten Alfred E.\nDriscoll to become the chairman of the dinner.\nI have sent out under my own name letters to about 200 of\nthe important givers of the last campaign through New Jersey\nand a XX few in New York.\nI think that everything is in hand and would like to let the\nBoss know that I undertook this.\nXXXXX\nMarje\nLionel E. Ogden\n850 South Windsor Boulevard\nLos Angeles, California 90005\nAugust 20, 1969\nThe President\nThe Western White House\nSan Clemente, California\nMy dear Mr. President:\nFirst, let me say that I deeply regret my extremely long delay in not\nthanking you sooner for those wonderful gifts that you so kindly sent to\nour whole family. Next to the fact that you chose Cotton Point for your\nnew home, your gifts were the nicest things that have ever come our way.\nI would also like to let you know that doing business with your represen-\ntatives was really a pleasure, thanks to France Raine, Herbert Kalmbach and\nour own attorney, Charles E. Horning who happens to be an old friend of\nMr. Kalmbach. Mr. Kalmbach, by the way, is a man who never takes \"no\" for\nan answer and gets things done but fast and to your satisfaction, I trust.\nAlso, your Secret Service men, namely Mr. Ikavoni, Mr. Merchant and many\nothers couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating to all of the\nfamily.\nIt was a great honor for me to have been even remotely connected with the\nnegotiations and when I decided on the 7½ interest, even though it was\nthe prime rate, I thought to myself that the President will think I'm\nreally a Shylock. However, when the prime rate went to 8½, I was one of\nthe few around who seemed happy about it.\nI was quite shook up when I read that you were particularly fond of real\nfireplaces and ours had never worked since it was built. I then quickly\nadvised France Raine to pass this information on to the White House as you\nwere coming out for your first visit. I hope, too, that there was something\nleft in the patio besides the fountain and the peacocks in the house, how-\never, with three new houses to furnish and gardens to landscape, I had no\nsay whatsoever, which is generally the case in most family matters when the\nodds are four ladies to one lone man.\nI saw an old college football mate of yours the other day and he told me a\nrather humorous story which I think you might enjoy recalling. It was about\nthe time Whittier and Arizona State at Tempe were playing one of their big\ngames. Beryl ended up as your roommate and he told me you were the most\nrestless and persistent roommate he ever had. Thank goodness for your\npersistency for our country. He remembered that you kept him awake most\nof the night because you were a nice guy but not an All American guard due\nto your size and he felt like telling you to keep still and let him get a\nlittle sleep and he also said the chief was not about to put you in the game.\nHowever, all ended up well as you did play in the game and good old Whittier\nbeat Arizona State. Beryl Notoff is an old friend of mine and we go through\nthe motions of playing golf together on many occasions.\nFinally, in spite of the advice of Virginia Head, my secretary, not to gush\nall over the President as he gets enough of that, I have to say as one Navy\nman to another, \"One hell of a tough job well done.\"\nMost gratefully yours,\nfinal Q Oyder\nLionel E.
