Y. 10021 January 7, 1970 Dear Fellow Member: Your Officers and Directors join me in wishing you a rewarding and happy 1970 and in thanking you for your support of our Lotos Club. In sending you the enclosed membership card for 1970, may I take the opportunity to remind you that our financial standing a year from now will depend on your continued support of Lotos functions--our State Dinners, receptions, luncheon and evening Round Tables, and other informal and friendly events that we all so enjoy? The benefit to our Club's treasury is simply an extra dividend beyond the pleasure gained from the events themselves. May I also remind you that hosting or sponsoring other parties or meetings for your company, organizations to which you or your family belong, and various social occasions, are another way we can all help Lotos? You know how well events of many kinds are managed and how splendidly Victor, our chef, makes them memorable. And do not forget that, though the Clubhouse is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, it is available for larger parties on those days. The cost of a Lotos party is usually lower, even during week end days, than you would find elsewhere, and the friendly, expert service is widely known even beyond our membership. Again my best wishes for a year that will give you everything you want. Cordially, Rocru Norris W. Harkness President 1870 - CENTENNIAL - 1970 VARIETY CLUB OF WASHINGTON TENT NO. 11 1823 L STREET, N. I hope you can get this to him and that he will have time to at least scan the contents. We are moving ahead with great strides at the college and without dissension or wavering. There are a few hurt feel- ings but our action had to be taken and it is best for the college. I certainly appreciate your help in these various matters, and while I hesitate to bother the President, I am sure he would like a factual report on what is happening at his Alma Mater. SCHOOLING OF COUNSEL January 16, 1970 My dear Mr. President: This is a further report on Whittier College and the Nixon Institution of Human Affairs. Our Presidential Selection Committee narrowed the list of applicants to twelve and then Art Corey and Milo Connick interviewed the top six. The top two were invited to the campus for visitation, with their expenses paid by the College. Dr. Frederick Binder, formerly President of Hartwick College and now Assistant Superintendent for Higher Education in the State of New York has just been here with his wife. He is forty-nine, full of vigor, is a real educator, speaks well and made a decided hit with the faculty, students and trustees. After three days of visitation here, the Trustees authorized me to invite him to become President. Terms are now being negotiated and we will have a press conference for the announcement in approximate- ly two or three weeks. He will be on the campus by April first if our negotiations are concluded. We have completely revised the Nixon Institution of Human Affairs. We asked Dr. Paul Smith to resign as Director, which has been accomplished. I am drawing amendments to the College By-Laws, putting that entire project under the direct supervision of the President of the College. If we use Paul, it will be in public relations and speaking for the Institution, for which assignment he is admirably fitted. We now have almost $500,000. cash in the Institution Account. This is enough to set up one complete Chair. Dr. Case is now negotiating with world-renowned professors to come to the campus to fill the first Chair next September. We hope to have him teach an outstanding class for the full year, or at least one semester. The type of man we are after will be so outstanding that we will get world-wide publicity and a man who is so famous in his field he will command considerable academic respect. We are reorganizing our Public Relations office and the Financial Relations office with new personnel and they will be given the task to immediately start raising funds for three more Chairs of $500,000.00 each. These are to endow special lecturers, writers and teachers for special courses at the college. These Chairs will not employ any regular faculty member at the college but will be used to bring renowned men to the campus. We pro- pose to leave the Nixon Institution Committee as now provided in the By-Laws but to be filled with distinguished national leaders which will constitute an Advisory Board for the Nixon Institution. 1. January 15, 1970 We will, of course, continue our efforts for a million dollar building along with the endowment for the other three Chairs. The fact is, however, that we now have $500,000.00 which completely endows one chair and the program actually starts with the commencing of school in September. Dr. Case has been of tremendous value to the College because of his own ability and his experience at Boston University. For the first time in my history on the Board we have regular committee meetings, committee members actually working on important policy and like matters. Since Dr. Case has been here I have been chairing five committee meetings per month, none of which has been less than a two-hour session and it is remarkable how we have been able to put together a team of trustees, faculty and administration which actually operates as it should have been doing for many years. This has been difficult for me because of my emotional involvement with Paul and it has not only taken hours and days of time from the office, but frankly, I am about to take off for a fishing trip in Mexico to get a little rest and get away from the tension. The Trustees are unanimous in taking the above action and we have no dissenting voice or group in the Trustees or the Administration. It has been a remarkable experience with coopera- tion and understanding of all involved here. Respectfully submitted, Thomas W. Bewley Chairman of Board of Trustees for Whittier College TWB/tdj President Richard M. Nixon The White House Washington, D. C.
