Dear Fellow Cave Men:-
This is the first official communication from your newly
appointed Membership Committee and we are happy to inform
you that a mutual friend of ours, John E. Swearingen, has
finally made it into Bohemia and has accepted our long-standing
invitation to join us as a member of Cave Man.
We would hope that at our next Encampment in July all of
you will have thoughtful and positive suggestions as to future
members. First priority perhaps should apply to at least one
or two additional resident members whom we badly need for
logistic purposes. It is also recommended that we should give
special consideration to those who (a) are either members of
the Bohemian Club or very close to becoming members; (b) individuals
who are well known to one or more of our members; and (c) pre-
ferably those who have been guests of Cave Man in past years.
Any comments or suggestions will be gratefully received by any
of the undersigned.
Bob Swain, Chairman
Larry Kimpton

B. J. LASKER SPL
Bunny Lasker to rmw
"I gave this a lot of thought last night. I don't want to talk
to the Vice President - you and I have been friends for a long
time -- you know that you and I and RN and PN have been
social friends. I would feel more comfortable checking with you.
"(I) I would give a cocktail party at the Madison from 6:30 to 8:00.
"(2) President - 8 - 9:30 - we will come home on the 10:00 Plane.
The other way would be cocktailsx there and then go over to the
Madison for a party.
rmw asked how many people are you talking about?
"people who have supported me and have supported the President.
AG/ Stans -- all the guys - couples who have helped. It could be
flexible from about 140 to 190. 70 couples up to about 90 couples.
He said his brother-in-law would supply the liquor and he would
like to pay for whatever food there could be for the cocktail period.
Maximum time for the party would be I-I/2 hours.
(This was Bunny Lasker 's request for a birthday party for
his 60th Birthday -- it was done on August 10th, 1970)
June 19, 1970
4:00 PM
Mr. Preston Wolf called me to say that Carl DeBloom had
given him my message.
After exchanging pleasantries he said:
"I might say at the outset that the people who would have the
most influence (if anyone has) on Taft would be Frank Dale or
Neil McElroy.
"As you know the whole Republican ticket in Ohio is in danger
due to the scandal that has come up. The principle candidates
have been invited to get off the ticket -- and have not been
invited to the dinner in Cleveland. (The candidates for AG and
for Treasurer).
"I understand there are other Congressmen in the Cleveland area
who will not be there.
"Our relations with the Taft people are very strained. I have not
talked to Mr. Taft nor heard from him or had any communication
at all with him since before the filing date in the Ohio primary.
If we support him at all it would only be because the President needs
the other Republican (if you can call either he or Saxbe that). We
here always knew Saxbe was a maverick.
"I know from previous experience that probably Dale and McElroy
are theonly two people who have influence with Taft. I would not mind
calling him - or trying to reach him - but I am sure it would have
no effect if he has made up his mind. In fact, it might make it worse -
he might say something about it.
"I am more concerned about his reasons that he is apparently going
to give for not being there than I am for his not being there. I
understand he thinks to attend a dinner in the Cleveland with the
Vice President would be bad.
"I understand Taft was in Cincinnati today but has returned to Washington.
I do not think I am the person to try to talk with him.
"He is a problem - he has his own money and he doesn't care - he
also knows he will get his cut out of this dinner without attending.
"I have dealt with the Tafts since 1907 and they are a greedy, selfish
- completely self-centered operation.
- 2 -
"I think it would be worthwhile having one of these men call
him -- even if they can't get him to attend -- maybe they can
have him give the rightstype of reason for not being there .
Either one - or both - of these men might shake that fellow up
a little bit.
"Gordon Scherer is always Taft's representative at Republican
meetings -- I do not know whether he thinks any differently about
the dinner nor whether Taft would listen to him if he does.
"I do believe it is important that he be prevailed upon not to make
an issue of his reasons for not going to the dinner. Ask him to
keep his mouth shut and just have a previous engagement - not
give any reasons for not being there.
"I suppose I canld call Dale but I think you would get better action
if someone from there would give him a call - and you must have
someone who can talk with Neil McElroy.
"If I think of anything else I will give you a call. Please tell
the President that I will do anything - anytime he wants and to
not hesitate to have you call -- but I do believe this is one where
someone else could do the cause more good."
