Julie said to put it in pending file until we know what campaigning will be going on. He is now asking again if they will come to Chicago. Dwight Chapin said to handle as we see fit; they have no campaign plans at present to include Mr. Stone. nh. Stone will be here towerrow 8/28/70 Carol for Nixon Foundation mutins. X W. CLEMENT STONE 5050 NORTH BROADWAY CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 60640 August 20, 1970 Carol Reavis Appointments Secretary to Mrs. Nixon The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Carol: I truly appreciate your letter of July 23rd. Enclosed is a copy of a letter from Mary McDonald dated August 10th who is doing a marvelous job on behalf of the Women's Committee for Joe Woods. I will be seeing the Nixons at San Clemente on August 28th; however, I have made it a practice not to discuss matters of this type unless the President or a member of his family first brings up the matter. In Illinois we plan on electing Joe Woods, Senator Smith and Bernard Carey (for Sheriff), a Republican controlled Senate and House of Representatives and to send some additional Republicans to the U.S. Congress. Any help that we can have to develop additional favorable publicity such as the one suggested by Mary McDonald would be most helpful. As Mary has to tie up the space at the Conrad Hilton rela- tively soon, I would appreciate it if you could make another inquiry. With kindest personal regards and hoping to hear from you soon, I remain Yours sincerely, WCS/vbh CC: Mary McDonald, Robert L. As I advised Mr. Evans, we have not been able to make any campaign commitments at this time since the extent of the family's participation in the campaign is undetermined. We just don't know if personal and official responsibilities are going to permit their active participation across the country. Please be assured that we are very appreciative of your interest in this matter. It is being brought to the attention of the President's office as well as Mrs. Nimon's. We know the young people would be happy to be with you and will let you know something definite as soon as we hear. Are you going to do any campaigning? Carol Reavis Carol. feepin file. in panding THOMAS W. EVANS 20 BROAD STREET NEW YORK, N.Y. July 7, 1970 Dear Miss Reavis: On behalf of Mr. W. Clement Stone, I am writing to invite Julie and David Eisenhower and Triçia Nixon to visit Chicago on behalf of the candidacy of Joseph I. Woods for the office of Chairman of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. Joe's race is an important one to the Cook County Republican Party. Clem Stone, his Campaign Manager, is enthusiastic about the potential for swinging votes to Ralph Smith and other Republican candidates by running a stong Woods campaign. The format suggested is a "get acquainted" party for the leaders of each ward and township. The party would not be a fund-raiser. The date requested is October 4th but I am confident this could be adjusted to the convenience of the Eisenhowers and Tricia. Thank you for your attention to this matter and please express my very best wishes to the invitees. Sincerely yours, Miss Carol Reavis The White House Washington, D.C. COUNTY'S OFFICE OF THE SHERIFF Cook COUNTY JOSEPH .Woods CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SHERIFF June 29, 1970 Mrs. Dwight David Eisenhower The White House Washington, D.C. Dear Julie: I appreciated very much receiving your letter which pointed out that David's military service might stop him from coming out to Cook County on October 4, 1970. I especially appreciated your hand-written note that you know David will be confined to base in October, but perhaps you could come out alone. I know that the people of Cook County love you, SO if this is a possibility, I hope you will keep it open if at all possible. Sincerely, Joseph Joseph I. Woods Sheriff of Cook County JIW/dl September 9, 1970 Dear Mr. Masso: In the enclosed package I am sending 12 of the President's shirts to have new collars attached. The President's valet does not feel it is necessary to have the cuffs re- placed but if it seems to you that the cuffs will soon start fraying perhaps you had better also replace them. Could you also please send us some additional plastic collar stays. Many thanks for your assistance. Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Secretary to the President Mr. Joe Masso A.
