Mardikian General A. C. Wedemeyer Jeremiah Milbank Dear Fellow Cave Men:- You will recall that our Camp Captain appointed a Building Committee last July to study the variety of improvements either required by the Grove Committee or for our own convenience. This is in the nature of a progress report by your committee coupled with a further request for any suggestions you may have which can be fitted into the final plan. Tom Sunderland has agreed to meet with George Mardikian and a representative of the Grove Committee within the next couple of weeks to finalize our suggestions, and we would greatly appreciate any comments you may have individually prior to that meeting. Now, as to our present thinking:- You all recognize, I am sure, that Cave Man Camp has, through years of neglect, deteriorated into a second-class camp, structurally speaking, and that major repairs must be made. We are currently thinking along the following lines: 1 - Major emphasis has been placed on renovating and adding to our kitchen and dining room facilities. It is planned to enlarge the dining area by moving the present kitchen to the "ghetto" area previously used by a combination of our hard working staff and miscellaneous storage. An entirely new structure will be built parallel to but separated from the main dining and kitchen area to house a new rodent-proof storage room and a clean and functional dormitory with toilet and shower facilities for our staff. Incidentally, you would be amazed how much damage pack rats, etc. can do to stored materials each year, if not protected. 2 - In general, we are adopting the principle of preventive maintenance by attempting to make necessary structural repairs throughout the camp SO that they will not have to be redone very year or two. A substantial number of such repairs will have to be made. 3 - Considerable thought has been given to the aesthetics of the camp, such as new cushions, chairs, plastic hangers, new screens where desirable, lights in all the wash areas, possibly rugs on cabin floors, etc. Any further ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated by your hard working (?) committee. Respectfully submitted, Bob frain Cave Man Building Committee Robert C. Swain Thomas E. Sunderland George M. Mardikian ar October 22, 1970 Dear Sir: It has just recently come to our attention that your organization has a plan whereby, for an annual fee of $12.00, fresh trimmings are planted periodically at the gravesites in the cemetery. The President and Mrs. Nixon are very much interested in subscribing to this service for the plot where their family pet, "Checkers", is buried. We would appreciate your seeing that this service is instituted and forwarding a bill to the White House at your early convenience. General Dayan would like to include the attached correspondence between the General, the President and Julie Eisenhower. The Embassy made clear that in no event will it be published unless this idea is completely acceptable to Julie. Would you please advise me of her wishes in this matter. Thanks. mr. I greatly enjoyed the meeting and, of course, should you or your staff ever feel like having information on my views on events in the Middle East, we shall always be at your disposal. Lot me also take this opportunity of wishing you all the best on your Presidency of the United States, the leading country of the democratic world. I have taken the liberty of attaching a small token for your daughter on the occasion of her wedding - a Canaanite necklace and a fertility idol (Asterite), from the year 1200 B.C., found in the hills of Bethlehem (village of Idna). If at any time your daughter doesn't want to go on having children - she should put it right away from her, because all the modern means are, of course, second rate, and won't stand up to the ancient charm. With my best wishes, Yours sincerely, Moshe Dayan Minister of Defence President-elect Richard M. Handling one Chief of State or Head of Government at a dinner is hard enough, but to have that many at one time presented a task which seemed insurmountable if we were to achieve our goal of making each one feel that he was getting the proper respect shown to him. The fine members of your team carried out their assign- ments flawlessly from the time that they picked up the guests by plane in New York to the time that they escorted them to their automobiles at the conclusion of the evening. Mrs. Nixon and I have often remarked after State Dinners how proud we are of our military aides. This assignment must sometimes seem rather boring for active men, but you can tell each of those who have been with us during our stay here that I believe they have rendered superb service to the Nation by their poise and efficiency in sometimes potentially touchy situations. October 25, 1970 MEMORANDUM TO The Secretary of State FROM THE PRESIDENT I would appreciate it if you would tell all of the State Department officials who participated in the dinner for Chiefs of State and Heads of Government last night that I was enormously impressed by the smoothness and grace with which they handled this unique and difficult assignment. It is hard enough to take care of one Head of State when he comes for a visit but to have that many at one time presented endless opportunities for sensitive leaders to get their noses out of joint. The way each Desk Officer escorted the man for whom he was responsible through the evening made me very proud of the Rreign Service and demonstrated again the truth of what you said to me when we were visiting the UN -- that our people know how to put on a meeting of any type with efficiency and style. MR. PRESIDENT According to Murray Chotiner, Governor Rockefeller is going to call you tonight to give you the real low-down on the poll figures in the Senate race in New York. Murray says that Cannon said they were all bunched together -- 30-30-30. Murray said he did not believe that and Cannon said he could not believe it either. Apparently those were not the right figures and the Governor will be placing a call to you. RMWoods 10/22/70 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON October 27, 1970 MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT FROM: Rose Mary Woods Road July of that appearance. October 21 to say what a great job you did if Taft makesit at all it will be because He thought your trip to the University was sensational and was, in fact, delighted with everything you did. He is very pessimistic about the chances in Ohio, but wanted to assure you that they are holding the finance group together and they will be ready to meet immediately after the Election to start working for 1972. As an indication of the lack of interest because of the dissension, disagreement and lack of cooperation within the Party, he said that while in previous years women had gone from door to door on behalf of the candidates, this year the women did not want to do this. In other words, there is just general apathy about the whole situation. Again, he repeated if there are any wins, it will be strictly because of your visit there. PRESENTING YOUR PERSONALIZED V.I.P.
