Dear Mr. Milhous:
The President was deeply grateful to read the comments
in your letter of February 13 and appreciated the spirit
in which you wrote concerning your brother. As you
will note in the attached copy of his letter to Philip
Milhous, he completely understands the many pressures
to which any relative of the President may be subjected.
It was thoughtful of you to give the President the benefit
of your thinking on some of the major issues which con-
front our nation today -- namely, the ecology, the economy,
and the problem of adequate medical care for all Americans.
You may be sure the President shares your hope that one
of these days it will be possible for all of you to get together
for an old-fashioned visit. In the meantime, he has haked
that I send his thanks and warmest personal regards to you.
With all good wishes,
Sincerely,
Rose Mary Woods
Secretary to the President

Dear Richard
On February 12, 1971, my brother Phil and his wife of
Grass Valley, California made an appearance on TV in a special
news report. Please, accept my apology as a member of the
Milhous family for it is my opinion that it was an act of very
poor taste. They have both been sick of body for several years
and now I believe that their minds have been affected also.
The main reason for this letter was to express my feelings
about the Phil Milhous news incident; but while I am writing,
will you please accept a layman's views of three very important
subjects to most everyone in the U.S.A? Don't you think that the
big S.S. jet plane can become a real ecology problem? Why'
don't we spend more money for outer space to keep up with other
nations, in case that space vehicles are used in future wars,
instead of so much for "moon" and other planet exploration?
And don't you really think, that if the unions keep jacking up the
wages, that price and wage control will have to happen? If so,
everyone should be controlled - even doctors, nurses, hospitals
and drugs for these services take so much of the older retired
peoples limited income. Another method would be for the
government to produce and sell drugs to the needy at cost.

Thanks so much for taking time to hear my version.
I surely hope some day, possibly after we retire, that we can
get together again and have a real good old fashioned visit.
Very respectfully
Your cousin
s/Charley E. Milhous

Dear Louis:
Pat and I are delighted with your most
generous gift of Baccarat crystal. You
may be sure we will greatly enjoy using it.
As a matter of fact, it is so beautiful I
have decided to keep it for use in our
family dining room, rather than take it to
Camp David as I had first thought I might
do.
With appreciation and warmest personal
regards to you, Mrs. Kung and Gregory.
Sincerely,
Mr. Louis Kung

The President told the VP this morning -- he was in Whiter
Whittier College at the time -- he want back to see Whittier High
School -- the auditorium at Whitter High School suffered such bad
damage it had to be taken down. It was an auditorium in which the
President had participated in oratorical debate contests, etc.
East Whitter Whittier School - grade school had to be torn down.
school where the President had gone
His Aunt was living in Long Beach and he remembers riding down
there to get her with his father.
Mostly he recalls the sound -- it is not just the shaking - it sounds
like thunder
