Dear Phil:
Until I read the reports in the press a couple of
weeks ago I was not aware that you had been
having such a rough time over the past few
years. I hope that this whole episode has not
been too embarrassing for you and your family.
The difficulty is that any relative of anyone who
holds the office of President inevitably will be
subjected to unfair publicity stories.
I recall those days when we used to work to-
gether in the store, and I hope the time will
soon come when you will feel as well and be of
as good cheer as you were in those days.
With warm personal regards,
Sincerely,
Dich

1800 FIRST NATIONAL BANK BUILDING
ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30303
January 5, 1971
Miss Rose Mary Woods,
Secretary to the President
The White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Miss Woods:
You are most kind to write as you did on December
29 in response to the suggestion I made through Mr. Bob
Guthrie for the President to have a pair of his golf shoes
repaired by my long time friend, Victor Benveniste, 1375
Peachtree, N. E., Atlanta, Georgia.
I can well imagine that your wonderful boss
doesn't have the chance now of wearing out his golf shoes
and so I will just suggest that if he does have a pair of
favorite street shoes Vick would certainly like to treat
them with love and care. I would like to leave this in
your good hands to handle as you feel appropriate.
Lastly, I hope you will tell the President that
I still look back with nostalgia to that day some few years
ago when we both were together involved in the sand and
heavy rough at the National Golf Links at South Hampton.
Happy New Year. Yates

FORMER MEMBERS OF CONGRESS
March 16, 1971
Dear Fellow Member:
Now that our first annual "Alumni Day" celebration has
been held successfully on the floor of the House of Repre-
sentatives, I want to report to you that the comments we
have received after the event from sitting Members and others
have been heartwarming. We should feel confident that we
have established a tradition that has gained widespread ac-
ceptance. Enclosed are the Congressional Record coverage of
the proceedings and some related newspaper stories.
At the General Membership Meeting held on the morning of
March 4, a Board of twelve FMC members was elected. They are:
Brooks Hays, President; Walter H. Judd, Vice President; A. S.
Mike Monroney, Secretary; Homer Ferguson, Treasurer; E. Ross
Adair; Jed Johnson, Jr.; Edna F. Kelly; Howard W. Pollock;
Robert Ramspeck; Benjamin Reifel; James E. Van Zandt; and
Ralph W. Yarborough. An appropriate new letterhead will be
prepared as well as a new brochure, reflecting our current
membership of 364.
As had been promised in earlier letters, the Congressional
Record reprint of the White House Prayer Service of last Fall
is being sent to you in this mailing.
I would like to remind you that dues for the year cover-
ing March 4, 1971 to March 4, 1972 are now payable. Please
make your check for $25.00 payable to FMC and mail it to the
below address as soon as possible.
Since we have now been awarded tax-exempt status by the
Internal Revenue Service, let me urge you to help us obtain
foundation and other financial assistance to enable us to
carry out the program spelled out in our brochure. We are
especially anxious to undertake the oral histories of our
membership, to provide a historical record of the Congressional
decision-making process. Please let me know at your earliest
convenience if you can be helpful in this regard or if you
would like additional information.

The Board has voted to prepare a directory of our
membership and I would also appreciate your returning to
us the enclosed data sheet, indicating if you would prefer
a different address being listed than the one presently
used.
The question of continuing March 4 as the date of the
annual meeting was considered by the Board, in view of the
concern expressed that the possibility of bad weather would
limit attendance. Because March 4 has been set as the
"Alumni Day" date in our Bylaws, because of the historic
significance of the date, and because of the problems of
having the Congress schedule the celebration at a later date,
the Board concluded that March 4 should be given an additional
trial for one more year. The matter can be reviewed, however,
at the next general meeting, tentatively scheduled for early
Fall.
I will be keeping you posted on developments as they
occur, especially the status of our Congressional Charter
legislation.
Brooks Sincerely, Hays

Dear Helen and Arnholt:
It was such a pleasure to see you in Washington
and I greatly enjoyed being at your reception.
Also, it was most gracious of you to let me
bring my brother Joe and his wife. All of us
hated to leave and go downstairs into that
crowded room where you really can't visit with
anyone!
Our stay in San Clemente proved to be so busy
that I had to work four nights and we worked
most of the day on Sunday. I shall hope for
better luck on our next trip as I would love to
see you.
With fondest personal regards,
Sincerely,
Rose Mary Woods

Dear Earl:
As you will note from the attached, I did not
forget your request for the names of news
media types who travelled on various trips
with the President during the time he was
Vice President. We found this list in going
through some of the files from the Vice
Presidential days. You will readily note
that some are now with other papers or
organizations, and a few are deceased.
With kindest personal regards to Rita and
to you,
Sincerely,

Earl Mazo called -- he would still like the names of
people who were on the overseas trips of the President when
he was Vice President -- something about forming an
organization and getting them all together in the spring.

Dear Earl:
At one point you mentioned that you were
trying to get together a list of people
who went on various trips with the President
during the time he was Vice President.
If you are still interested in that, I will
dig out all of the names that I can find,
but I don't want to do this unless this is
a project in which you are really interested.
Please advise, as I have already started to
pull some of the names.
With kindest personal regards,
Sincerely,

MEMORANDUM
TO:
Lucy Winchester
Rmu
FROM:
Rose Mary Woods
Last week I had a call from Bill Harrington
who has orchestras in New York and in Washington (and who played
for Julie's wedding reception) asking that he be given consideration
for Tricia's reception.
Then today I received a call from Reeves
Bunting from the Republican Committee in Philadelphia saying that
an orchestra leader - Mark Davis of Philadelphia had told one of
his competitors that he had been asked to bid for the job of playing
at Tricia's wedding reception. Reeves would like us to put the
following orchestra group on for consideration (they are friends
and the father of one of them is a big supporter of the Republican
Party in Pennsylvania) - Romig, Carney & Lewis (Philadelphia).
FYI the Carney is Art's nephew.
I have told each of these people that I knew
nothing of any plans but would pass their message along in the
event there was a wedding reception coming up at some future date.
The Nixons used to use Bill Harrington for
some of their parties when he was Vice President.
(As soon as the announcement is made, I will just refer the calls
to you -- did not want to do so in these cases since it would have
appeared that it was in the mill).
ELMER HOLMES BOBST
7 EAST 60 STREET
NEW YORK, N.Y. 10022
March 25, 1971
Dear Pat and Dick:
I have been spending two or three days in New York trying to
catch up with work, attend board and executive meetings, et al,
and yesterday I found a large heavy and most beautifully wrapped
box in my office in New York. It had been sent to 7 East 60th
Street from Morris Plains, our headquarters in New Jersey. I
had the box put into my car and erelong it was in our apartment.
I put it on our kitchen table and up to then had no knowledge
from whom the package had come. In looking very closely, I
suddenly spied the beautiful President's Seal, and then I was
in a quandary. Dodo is still in Palm Beach and I did not know
whether I ought to open the package or wait until her return to
New York, which is scheduled to be on April 12th.
Finally, my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to
determine just what the box contained. I did not open more than
one of the packages, and when I saw the President's Seal and his
name on the cocktail glasses and the handsome match boxes, I got
an idea of what else there was in the box and decided to give
Dodo the pleasure of opening the other packages. Naturally, I
immediately called here on the telephone and she practically
gasped when I told her that each one of the contents of the
package bore the President's Seal. Her first words were -
please be careful don't break anything, and I told her that I
had not gone any further than to open one package.
I am certain there is no need of my telling you how proud and
happy both of us are due to your thoughtfulness, kindness and
friendliness. I can only say, with truth, that our meeting
together 18 years ago has been responsible for some of the most
glowing and treasured episodes in not only my life but also of
Dodo's.
As ever,
Elmer
