MARILYN R. PARENT
May 24, 1971
TO Rose Mary Woods
Dear Rose:
Am sending you the enclosed check for
signature by you or the President since
Mr. Kalmbach is in Europe and will not be
in the office until June 7th and I did not
want to delay payment. All other bills
are being paid promptly in Mr. Kalmbach's
absence since Mr. DeMarco can also sign
the checks but I won't be seeing him until
Wednesday of this week so thought it would
just be easier to send it on to you for
signature.
Sincerely,
Marilyn R. Parent

Dear Mr. Lang:
This is just a note to thank you for your letter of
May 21 and for your most gracious invitation for
Tricia and her flance to consider the Xanadu Yacht
and Tennis Club for their honeymoon. Judging
from the pictures, it is certainly beautiful!
I have called your letter to the President's atten-
tion and you may be sure he greatly appreciates
your continued interest. However, Tricia and Ed
have already made their honeymoon plans and
therefore will not have the pleasure of accepting
your invitation.
With my very best wishes for every success and
happiness in your new post,
Sincerely,
Rose Mary Woods

My dear Miss Woods:
While it is appreciated, the date is late. I just took over
here a few days ago and this is the first opportunity I have
had to write.
If there is flexibility in the plans of Miss Nixon and her
fiance, I would like to extend a very cordial invitation for
them to consider Xanadu Yacht and Tennis Club in connection
with their honeymoon early next month.
This is a private club, and the completely guarded nature of
the property would appear to make it an ideal location for
the newlyweds in that their privacy is absolutely guaranteed.
We would place a deluxe villa of four rooms at their disposal
for the length of their stay, with our compliments. The club
will also assume any charges they might incur for food and
beverage. If the secret service is involved we would provide
accomodation for the man (or men) assigned, without charge.
An air-conditioned car, with or without driver, would also be
available with our compliments.
If there is interest by Miss Nixon and her fiance, and I'm
hopeful there will be, I would be pleased to fly to Washington
to co-ordinate the details. You have my personal assurance this
invitation and it's possible acceptance, will be considered as
confidential.
Please convey my respects to the President, and my kind personal
regards to you.
Sincerely
Green Paug

MEMORANDUM FOR:
MISS ROSE MARY WOODS
FROM:
ROBERT C. ODLE, JR.
Reo
SUBJECT:
EDWIN P. HOYT
With reference to your memorandum of May 6, the answer is yes,
finally. Mr. Hoyt does have a publisher -- Random House, and
the book definitely will appear before the election.
Since Hoyt has seen the President, Mrs. Nixon, and many others,
and since much of his work is done, I think we should continue
to assist him where possible. However, you might want to be
aware of the following two facts: (1) Hoyt says the "book
business" is bad these days and has asked us to find a govern-
ment job for him; and (2) he's talked to Senator Fulbright
about writing a biography of him. Nevertheless, I think Hoyt
is strongly pro-RN and that his book will be a definite plus
for us.
Perhaps the attached listing of books now being written which I
prepared for Mr. Klein's signature will be of interest to you.
I am also returning your "Hoyt file."

SUBJECT:
Attached letter from Edwin P. Hoyt
I have received the attached letter from Ed Hoyt. I do
not want him to call and talk with all these people if he
doesn't have a publisher. Please advise whether he has
gotten another publisher and whether we should give him
the list of names he is asking for. Our Xerox copy of
the list made up by Noble is attached, but I would want
to take some of those off before we send it to him, even
if it is all set for him to go ahead with the book.
Thanks.

Dear Gloria Seelye:
The attached lists show the countries the
President and Mrs. Nixon visited during
their official trips from 1953 through 1959.
We do have the detailed itineraries for
these trips, and should you need further
information I would be happy to have you
look at this material when you come to
Washington.
It was a pleasure to talk with you in San
Clemente, and I will look forward to see-

Dear Miss Woods -
I want to thank you so much for the hour-long interview
we had during your trip to the Western White House in
March. My book on Mrs. Nixon is rolling along and I'm
keeping very busy.
You may recall an offer you made to have someone look
up the eight trips taken by the Nixons during the Vice
Presidency. The major trips are eaty to pin down but
some of the shorter and less significant have not been
very well reported.
I certainly would appreciate any help you could give
me along these lines. I will be back in Washington
the first two weeks of June and hope to complete my
interviews.
It's always SO wonderful to meet someone you have
heard such fine reports about for SO many years.
Thanks Again -

Dear Rose:
Enclosed is a letter which I have addressed
to The President, but I would appreciate your
reading it and if you think he would be interested
and has the time, I wish you would put it on his
desk. If you think it is not advisable, then just
file it.
I enjoyed talking to you when I was in Washing-
ton and had an excellent trip to Mexico. The
fishing was good, the weather perfect and the rest
appreciated.
Thanks a lot for your help.
Sincerely,
Town

My dear Mr. President:
IN RE: WHITTIER COLLEGE
Last Monday the Board of Trustees of Whittier College had
its quarterly meeting and took some very definite action.
Every Trustee was deeply distressed at the action taken by
the Whittier Student Senate with reference to your honorary degree.
Some of us wanted to make a strong statement and release it to the
press, but the general feeling was that since the whole matter had
been settled it would be unwise to raise the issue for further
argument, particularly with the press. The annual Spring Sing was
held on the Sunday following the release of the statement by the
Student Senate and there were some one thousand to fifteen hundred
parents on the campus. At this time, Dr. Binder stated that the
action of the Senate was not the action of the College or the
Administration and regretted the action taken. The next day, a
number of students felt that the student body should take action.
There were group meetings on the campus on this subject. At about
the same time, the annual student body election was held and a new
Senate was chosen which took office following the senate action on
the degree. The new Senate met and decided there should be a
referendum to the student body that there should be a vote on the
prior action. An election was called and just a few over a thousand
students took part and by a vote of three to one rescinded the
action of the former Student Senate. The new Senate then met and
rescinded the action of the former Senate.
At the same time it advised the news media of its action,
which was well covered on the west coast. With this in mind, the
Trustees felt that it would be better not to take any further
action. I made a very clear statement that, in my opinion, the
Trustees had an obligation to regulate some student activities and
that we should not be afraid to say "yes" and "no" on certain issues.
Men like Art Corey, Bill Camp and John Stauffer were of the same
opinion and we do not propose to let the students tell us how we
are to run the college. We are also going to see that a faculty
representative attends each student meeting so that precipitate
action is not taken unannounced.
You will be glad to know that one of our professors has a
whole hour on television this next week to explain why your policy
of Vietnamization and the withdrawal of troops must be carried out
as directed by you. Having spent considerable time in Indo-China
he has some interesting data on why the troops cannot be withdrawn
at one fell swoop.
The Presidential Oral History Program is in full swing and
we have added Evlyn Dorn to the staff to assist your brother and
Dr. Arena.
John Stauffer made a contribution at the Trustees' meeting
which was $50,000.00 raised by the Trustees among themselves to
pay the first year's cost of the Oral History Project. We have
also started raising money for next year among ourselves for the
project, which we anticipate will be completed in the two year
period. These are Trustee gifts and not gifts made to the college
or coming from college funds.
Two new Board members attended for the first time. One is
Richard Ettinger, Jr., Chairman of the Board of Directors of
Wadsworth Publishing Company. His father founded Prentice-Hall
and he continues that work. He is a young man, has excellent ideas
and is on various foundations which are going to be of financial
help. Francis Lindley, a Los Angeles Attorney and President of the
Haynes Foundation is also a new Trustee and he is going to be of
great help to the Board. We now have an excellent Board and with
three vacant places still to be filled we are looking forward to some
good years.
Respectfully submitted,
Tom

Lucy:
You probably should give Tricia the
attached letter along with the Bible.
As you probably know, Uncle Ezra,
who died last Fall, was a brother of
the President's mother, and Aunt Ruth
is his second wife.
Thanks.
