June 17, 1971 Dear Ed: I have written letters to the people on the list which I sent you, telling them that you have been authorized to write a book. I hope this will cut down on the problem you are having reaching some of them. In addition to the names I gave you previously, you might want to include: Miss Loie Gaunt Richard Nixon Foundation Crocker-Citizens Plaza n West Sixth Street Los Angeles, California 90017 Miss Caunt was on the Presidential staff during his Senatorial and Vice Presidential years and is now with the Richard Nixon Foundation. With all good wishes, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Secretary to the President Mr. Edwin P. Hoyt 209 Providence Road Annapolis, Maryland 21401 be: Loie Gaunt RMW:maf 209 PROVIDENCE ROAD ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND 21401 June 12, 1971 Dear Rose Mary: Thanks for everything you have done to help me in the book project. I have problems still, and wrote Herb Klein today about them. They involve the access to people. Mrs. Dorn, for example, is going to check with you or Herb before seeing me. Don Nixon is going to check with the President about opening some of the family material to me. The problem is not that it causes me delay, because this is not too important, but that you and Herg are going to be nagged to death by people who quite rightly want to be sure they are doing the right thing before talking to me. I wonder if you could start with that master list, and if someone could write a letter to all those people asking that they see me, and hear my questions, and noting that the President favors this book and that you and Herb have been working with me? It ought to do a lot to prevent your inundation as time goes on. And I would particularly like having such understandings in the works before I make my trip to California this summer to see all the people I have to see. I hope I am not proving to be too much of a problem to you, but by the nature of the President's position and the manifold demands made on al thase around him, they become very cautious (I would too) and thks does make things difficult Best regards, Sd Edwin P. CHAMBERS OF The Superior Court LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 90012 McINTYRE FARIES, JUDGE (PERSONAL) June 29, 1971 Miss Rose Mary Woods Secretary to the President The White House Washington, D. C. 20500 Dear Rose Mary: Jerry and I have just returned from Hawaii and we leave on the 30th to visit Norway, Sweden, etc., on the T. S. Hamburg. A copy of our itinerary is enclosed. We have your letter of June 17 and I will be happy to cooperate with Edwin P. Hoyt. I think I have a memory like an elephant but have not retained any files. Please tell him that I regret very much that Mrs. Faries and I will not be back in Los Angeles until August 8, when we can be reached at apartment 5-C, 400 South Burnside Ave., Los Angeles 90036; telephone 931-6808. While we were away Bernard Brennan died so his information probably will not be available. I turned over the files that I had to A. Ronald Button who is still avail- able but whether he has the files or not I do not know. Also, I turned over a lot of files to the Los Angeles County Central Committee when I went on the bench in 1953. Also, a few years ago I gave a considerable number of files and papers to The Republican Associates. They seemed to be very glad to get them. These papers dealt mainly with (1) the Knowland campaign; (2) the expenses and arrangements at the 1952 election and the following inauguration, i.e., Califor- nia expenses, assignment of rooms, etc. With all good wishes to President Nixon, his family, Bob Finch and yourself (last but not least), I remain Sincerely yours, McIntyre Faries MF:bk Enclosure German Atlantic Line Mail and Cable Represented by Holland America Line Information Agencies, Inc. Herndon, A/2c AF 19381413 Box 446 Clovis AFB New Mexico Dear Charles: Many thanks for your letter of August 13 and your warm assurances of support in my campaign for the Vice Presidency. I well recall our discussion at the Young Republican Convention two years ago in Bakersfield. I also want you to know that I hope you will find it possible to participate in this campaign, despite the fact that you are away from home and in the service. You may be sure that anything you find it possible to do will be greatly appreciated. With kindest regards and best wishes to you and Mrs. Herndon, Cor 11y, Richard Nixon RN:bb 13 August 1952 Senator Richard Nixon Whittier, California Dear Dick: I followied the Conventions with much interest and was very pleased with the G.O.P.'s pick for candidate for Veep. You have undoubtedly read many letters and telegrams voicing their satisfaction in the choice. I was more than satisfied when you were made the choice because I feel that I know you personally. You may remember the California Young Republicans Convention of 1950 in Bakersfield. I was there. We had breakfast at adjoining tables and had a chat in the patio. I was a member of the Resolutions Committee at that Convention. I must now admit that I was not then of voting age but that had no bearing on my interest. Later I was privileged to meet you at a meeting held at the Melody Bowl on Highway 99 in Bakersfield. I was honored by being chosen to work on the Nixon for Senator Committee for Kern County. (As an aside, I also saw Mrs. Dourlas give a talk from the same platform in the Melody Bowl at the Policeman's Ball. She was stone drunk. I was present at the Central Committee Convention at Fresno with the Kern County Nixon for Senator group where I enjoyed Fred Houser's showmanship but not his tactics. Now, after such a brave introduction, I would like to make an even braver offer to assist in any way, no matter how small, in the coming campaign. Because I am in the Air Force and my wife and I are half way across the country from home, we are unable to work in the district where we will vote. On the other hand, for this same reason, I might be able to help you with an insight as to how a serviceman feels. Also, I abhore deficit spending. I'm here where it's done by the thousands monthly. Possibly, and gladly I would, I could help you there. I may be young, inexperienced and very much a novice, but if I can in any way help a fellow Republican, honored Senator, candidate and friend, I shall conscientiously do whatever in my power is possible. Never fear my vote for I fear for my country. Always with you are my Lest wishes, my full support and my prayers. Very sincerely, Charles F. Herndon, A/2c AF 19381413 Box 446 Clovis AFB, New Mexico June 2, 1971 MEMORANDUM TO: Bob Haldeman FROM: Rose Mary Woods I assume that you may be aware (I was not) that Whittier College is doing an oral history project which involves taping interviews with some of the resident's friends and relatives up to the period of 1943. In talking with Evlyn Dorn today she told me that Ed Nixon had gotten her into the project and she further said that apparently Whittier College has been funded by someone for $50,000 a year for the next two years to work on this project. I am just passing this along FYI since I do not know whether the President has any knowledge of this activity. Arthur L. Godfrey For Rose W.
