TRACY DONALD J.ZOELLER Miss Rose Mary Woods The White House Washington, D. C. Dear Rose: Pursuant to our telephone conversation of yesterday after- noon, I am enclosing, herewith, six waivers of notice of Meeting of Board of Directors, in blank, to be signed by the Directors of The Elmer and Mamdouha Bobst Foundation, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Bobst, myself and the President. I also enclose two waivers of notice of Meeting of Members of this Foundation, which should be signed by the President since he is also a Member of the Foundation. These waivers will be held in reserve for use at such times as the Directors and/or Members meet. We shall have to have a Directors' meeting very short- ly and I should, therefore, greatly appreciate it if you would obtain the President's signature on all of the proposed waivers and return them to me in the enclosed, stamped envelope. As I explained to you, I am also enclosing Internal Revenue Service Form 990 which, strictly speaking, requires the signature of all of the Directors. While a return on this form has been filed with an explanatory note to the effect that the President's signature was not available to us prior to the filing date, we are proposing to file a supplemental, or amended, return in order to comply with the requirements. If the President will be good enough to sign this re- turn, where indicated, you can also return it to me in the enclosed envelope. Thank you very much for your help in this. I hope that it will not inconvenience you or the President. As ever, MCR:sm Enclosures: 10, as above Milt. 7 DAVID G. HITCHCOCK OUNTY OF REGISTRAR OF VOTERS P.O. Very respectfully yours, David G. Hitchcock Registrar of Voters DGH:rc Spid Milned Enc. 5/15/72 file FORMER MEMBERS OF CONGRESS, INC. May 30, 1972 Dear Fellow Member: Our second annual Alumni Day celebration was held on April 28th on the floor of the House of Representatives, and I am pleased to report the tradition is now well-established. Speaker Carl Albert, Majority Leader Hale Boggs, Minority Leader Gerald Ford, as well as other sitting Members, gave us a fine welcome, and representatives of Congresses from the 65th to the 90th responded appropriately. About 75 FMC members were present during the day, although not all were able to be present at the roll call. Enclosed is a copy of the Con- gressional Record report of the proceedings. Our fellow-member, Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird, arranged for buses to take us to the State Department Conference Room for very informative off-the- record briefings by high officials of State and Defense Departments. They dealt mainly with the Far East, including the current situation in Vietnam, and the overall defense strength of the United States today, especially in relation to that of the Soviet Union. We returned to the Hill for a delightful reception for members, spouses, and widows. Quite a few sitting Members dropped by -- considering it was a Friday evening in an election year! Speaker Albert has written us: "It was great to have all the former Members of Congress who were able to come, in Washington for our Annual Reunion on April 28. I was of course, delighted that it was enjoyed by others as much as by myself". Enclosed is a list by States of the 400 who have joined FMC. You will note with regret that 17 of our members have passed away in these two years. The membership of seven more is suspended while they are running this year for the House or Senate. With almost 40 Senators and Representatives having announced that they are not running for re-election, plus the possible "casualties" on November 7th, there will be quite a few eligible recruits next January. At our business meeting, six new members of the Board were elected: To fill out a one-year term, Jeffery Cohelan of California; to fill out a two-year term, Joseph Tydings of Maryland; for three-year terms, Joseph Barr of Indiana, Eugene Keogh of New York, Thomas Kuchel of California, and George Meader of Washington. The officers elected for 1972 are reported in the enclosed Record reprint. BOARD OF DIRECTORS WALTER H. JUDD, President JEFFERY COHELAN GEORGE MEADER JOSEPH D. TYDINGS, Vice-President HOMER FERGUSON A, S. MIKE MONRONEY BEN REIFEL, Secretary EUGENE J. KEOGH HOWARD W. POLLOCK JOSEPH W. BARR, Treasurer THOMAS H. KUCHEL ROBERT RAMSPECK 3083 Ordway Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. 20008 - (202) 362-6488 -2- The fall reunion and briefings are planned for sometime after the November election. A new Biographical Directory of the American Congress, 1774-1971, has been issued. As a former Member of Congress, you can obtain a copy by writing to the Joint Committee on Printing. Our wives and the widows of all former Members of the Congress have formed a Women's Auxiliary of FMC. They got off to a flying start with 48 women attending an organizing luncheon held the same day as our meeting, and 169 en- rolling as Charter Members. As their officers they elected: President, Mrs. Harold Hagen; Vice-President, Mrs. A. Sydney Herlong; Secretary, Mrs. Walter Judd; Treasurer, Mrs. John Foley. During the current year we hope to emphasize activities that will pre- serve the associations and friendships established during our years of active service, develop a program to give our people greater appreciation of the history of the Congress and perhaps of some individual Congresses. We hope for the en- actment of a resolution establishing an annual "Congress Day", (like Constitution Day, Flag Day, Law Day, etc.), possible holding of regional meetings, issuance of an occasional alumni bulletin or newsletter. Your Board welcomes your sugges- tions. Most of you have sent your 1972 dues. A reminder slip is enclosed in case you haven't. Thanks. With warm personal regards and every good wish, I am, Sincerely, Walter Suid Walter H. May 15, 1972 JOHN EHRLICHMAN I checked out the suggestion that the President might sign Martin Anderson's application for membership in the Bohemian Club. The President feels since he is not a regular member but an honorary member that he should not sign as the sponsor for Martin. He will be glad to have Marty list him as one of the members who has known him for years, etc. Probably the Club will then ask for a letter and we can send that in -- he just feels because of the honorary status that he is not in a position to be the sponsor for any new members. He wants you to be sure Martin understands that he would be glad to do this otherwise. THANKS Roors Rose Mary Woods June 2, 1972 Dear Jack: With the trip to Russia and all the other things going on, I regret that this is the first opportunity I have had to reply to your letter of May fourth regarding the files you have in your Archives. The next time we have someone coming to New York to pick up some- thing we will make arrangements to have them stop by for these files -- and, of course, will let you know in advance. I was certainly sorry to hear about Mary O'Brien and will get a note off to her as soon as possible. Do give me a call the next time you are in Washington -- hopefully the schedule will not be too hectic and we will be able to have lunch -- or at least a visit.
