Dear Mr. and Mrs. McCabe:
The President left a hand-written note for
you when he left Assoteague Island yesterday
and when he returned to the White House he
asked me to forward the enclosed ash trays
and glasses.
All of us are grateful to you for making your
Assoteague Island home available to the
President so that he might have a couple of
days of relaxation.
With best wishes,
Sincerely,

PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL
Dear Loie:
We all know what a "pain" Roy Day has been to us. But to many people
he was a man who was involved in the early days and can talk about the
"Richard Nixon he knew."
Do you have any thoughts on how he might be used in California - or have
an idea as to someone who could soothe his feelings. I can understand
how he feels when he is asked to speak about the President but has to
decline because he cannot be as enthusiastic as he thinks the President
deserves.
I don't know whether Frank Jorgensen, Earl Adams or any of those
people think he is worth saving, but I hate to see some one who is known
as an old friend going around saying how hurt he is. (Unfortunately, we
are going to have a large club if we don't stop some of the young,
arrogant group on our staff and on the Committee to Re-elect!)
If you have any ideas, please let me know - otherwise please destroy
this letter and let me know that you think it is hopeless.
With fondest personal regards,
Sincerely,
Rose Mary Woods
Secretary to the President

ROY O. DAY
Dear Rose Mary,
The enclosed copy of letter does
not in any way reflect the least change
in my feeling toward one Dick Nixon. I
think he is doing a magnificent job under
terrific handicaps by certain nutheads in
Congress, and I believe he will go down
in history at the end of his SECOND TERM
as one of the truly GREAT LEADERS of our
Country. Please tell him I predict this
for him, and I haven't been wrong so far
on him, as he knows.
My very best to you as always,
Rey

Dear Masonic Brother Bob,
I regret that I feel it is necessary for me to decline
my scheduled speaking engagement before the Club, on the
13th of September, on the "Beginning of Richard Nixon".
I have given considerable thought to this matter before
finally deciding to write you, after trying to reach you by
phone this morning. The situation 1s this, Bob - after hav-
ing actually launched this great man's career, and having an
active part of some kind of leadership position, at some level,
the powers that be, probably at California level, have seen
fit to completely eliminate me, and even made the remark that
I was too controversial, which is one of the most ridiculous
statements I have heard in recent years. Therefore, I have no
other choice than to let the local area chairman show his stuff,
if any, and pursue my own interests and pick my involvement
carefully. In brief, Bob, I have been deeply hurt - I am not
mad, as I am mature enough to know that gets one nowhere fast.
I have gone into some detail here, to explain why I do
not feel I can make the talk I would like to, with the enthus-
iasm that rightfully belongs and goes with it, when I have pre-
sented it previously. Please try to understand, and if not clear
I will gladly expend on a phone call.
Under the circumstances, perhaps you should invite young
Mr. Charles Bader, member of our City Council, and named as the
East San Gabriel Valley Chairman of the Re-Elect the President
Campaign, and give him an opportunity to show his wares.

Dear Roy:
When we are in San Clemente, I always try
to catch up on some of the correspondence I
can't possibly keep up with in Washington.
It seems to me that we need every friend and
worker we can round up for the tough fight
ahead. I am going to check on exactly who
is running the campaign in California and
suggest they get in touch with you and many
of the other friends who have been loyal sup-

Dear Rose,
Thanks so much for your letter received this morning
re my talk to the young men going to London, sponsored by
Rotary Clubs in the Area.
At the risk of becoming a bore, I am sending you copy
of just one more, which I received this morning, resulting
from similar talk I gave to about one hundred members of
Presbyterian Church Mariners Class, in Upland.
The real reason I am being repititious is because I
have learned that the name Roy Day is too controversial to
have a place in the Nixon campaign. I think Rose, it goes
back to Rousselot-Hillings days, etc. I will only say I am
not angry, but I feel deeply hurt, because no one has been
any more loyal and steadfast that I toward our President.
I am certain he does not know of this localized situation
and he has far too many heavy decisions on his mind and heart
to even think about this, but I did want you to know, and
would suggest you not even mention this to him at all.
I do know that my story of RMN handing me back five
one hundred dollar bills and telling me to return them to
the certain utility which was trying to impress him in 1946
when we really needed money, has made a terrific impact on
people, in or out of churches, and best of all, everything I
have discussed is non-controversial and not partisan in any
way,
Meanwhile, keep up the good fight. I am proud to know
you, as well as the President.
Sincerely,

I want to express sincere appreciation to you,
both personally and for all in the Yacht Club Mariners
of the Upland First Presbyterian Church. Your willing-
ness to share an evening with us was deeply appreciated
by all. Your tremendous background gave a new insight
to us on how the political life of our nation can be
shaped by concerned individuals. The materials you
brought identifying significant aspects in the political
life of President Nixon were most impressive and added
much to your outstanding presentation.
Do know we are grateful to you and should be honored
to have you and Mrs. Day visit our group any first
Friday when your schedule and Baptist convictions permit.

BOB HALDEMAN:
As you know, Bill Timmons is working on the hotel
reservations, etc. for the convention. He has given me the
list attached as the people for whom we made reservations (at
our expense) for the 1968 convention in Miami.
It seems to me that we can cross off some of these
people and we need to probably add some - not necessarily ones
we would pay for but ones who would want to be there:
Deletions:
Mr. and Mrs. Herb Brownell
Dr. J. C. Lungren
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Drown
Dr. Ernest Nixon - deceased
Tom Duggan - deceased
Possible Additions:
Mr. and Mrs. W. Clement Stone
Mr. and Mrs. John Mulcahy
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Stans (guess they would be official)
Mr. C. G. Rebozo
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Abplanalp
Mr. and Mrs. Hobert Lewis
(Now - I am sure all of the ones I have suggested adding would pay
their own way -- but maybe I should make up a list of ones that we
would make the r eservations for (if they want to come) and then a
separate one for the people whose rooms we pick up the tab for.)
(Do you agree with me that we should not pick up the Drown's bill --
actually if they are there we should see that they are not at the same
hotel - or willxxxx the President just choper in and not stay at a hotel
at all)
(I will be glad to work on a complete list of both types if I can get
any guidance you might have gotten from the President in talking
with him).
