C. 20008 FORMER MEMBERS OF CONGRESS Dear Fellow-Member of FMC: Our Third Annual Alumni Day celebration was held on the floor of the House of Rep- resentatives on May 24, 1973. You will be interested in the enclosed reprint of the pro- ceedings as reported in the CONGRESSIONAL RECORD -- and perhaps made a little nostalgic. More than 80 former Members of the House and Senate participated in the day's activities although not all could be present for the roll call. The annual business meeting was held in the morning with reports on last year's ac- tivities, discussion of FMC plans and programs for the next year, and elections. The minutes will be sent you later for your information and comments or suggestions. You will note in the reprint the report of members elected as officers and to the Board of Directors. Former Senator B. Everett Jordan of North Carolina is the new Presi- dent and George Meader of Michigan is Vice-President. After our business meeting, our "reunion" in the House Chamber, and luncheon, we had two informative briefings. First, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Honorable George Shultz, discussed very frankly our present fiscal situation, budget, inflation, interna- tional balance of trade and payments, gold, etc. - the problems and the prospects. He gave recent facts and figures to support his basic optimism regarding the future. Chief Justice Warren Burger of the Supreme Court gave a comprehensive analysis of the problems confronted by our Federal courts and judges, our lawyers and law schools, etc. with suggestions for dealing with them. All, and particularly our own lawyers, were greatly appreciative of his presentation. In each case many questions were asked and most said we had never had more interesting and useful sessions. The reception at 5:00 p.m. for our members and the FMC Auxiliary of wives and widows of former Members was delightful. It was decided to have the next general meeting in Washington in late October. Enclosed is a list by state of our 393 current members. Most of you have sent your 1973 dues. If you haven't, please do. We need you all. Remember FMC dues have been ruled tax-deductible by the IRS. A reminder slip is enclosed. We believe this organization and its members can play an increasingly useful role in America - especially at this particular time of widespread questioning of values and in- stitutions. We can help develop a wider and deeper understanding of the Congress and the vital role it has to play. It has been a great honor and privilege for me to serve as your President this year - and I thank you very much. Sincerely, Aratter Hyudd Walter H. Judd BOARD OF DIRECTORS WALTER H. Santangelo May 15, 1973 Dear Loie: I wonder if you or Mr. Firestone could contact Mr. Field and let him know we had passed this along to you because of the President's busy schedule, etc., and that the Foundation is not at the stage yet to consider drawings for the Library. Also, for your information, both Mrs. Nixon and Julie have mentioned to me their interest in becoming actively involved in the Foundation plans. Mrs. Nixon will be especially interested in the design for the building, and she has indicated that she wants it to have a Spanish motif. Perhaps you can also mention to Ed that people should not be going ahead with plans, drawings, etc. Many thanks -- take care, Love, Rose Mary Woods Personal Secretary to the President Miss Loie Gaunt The Richard Nixon Foundation 44th Floor 515 South Flower Street Los Angeles, California 90071 Letter and brochures from Wayne Field, Chairman of the Board, Seattle Kings Football Club, 2717 Seattle First National Bank Building, Seattle, Washington 98104 June 7, 1973 Dear Aunt Jane: Words fail me in trying to reply adequately to your beautiful letter of May twenty-first. I have received literally thousands of messages of encouragement and understanding in recent weeks, but none were more meaningful or more moving than yours. Although you have stated that you are very proud of me, I can assure you that this pride works both ways. I only wish I could tell you how much the example of your love, your compassion, your caring for others, and your faith in God and your fellow man, have meant to me, throughout my childhood and all the years which have followed. Perhaps, by taking the liberty of substituting your name for that of "Ben Adhem" in the poem by Leigh Hunt, I can show you in some small way how much it has meant to me to have you as a friend, as a teacher, and as a beloved member of the family. The verse, as altered by me, reads: "And show'd the names whom love of God had bless'd, A nd lo! Jane Beeson's name led all the rest." Pat, Tricia and Julie join me in sending our deep affection and love to you. Sincerely, Mrs. Jane M. Beeson 282 North Gale Hill Lindsay, California 93247 RMW:MAF:mcp Copy of hand-written letter from aunh Jane (Excellent) Puv resply Lindsay, Calif. 21st, 1973 Dear Richard: I have known for the past two weeks that I must write to you and express my feeling of sympathy, love and understanding of the unfortunate position in which you have been placed. Just when you should be enjoying the fruits of your outstanding accomplishments, in bringing the prisoners of war home and plans for peace and friendship with other countries, this big scandal has to be thrown in your lap! So many friends and young people have expressed their faith in your integrity and high principles and cannot understand unless it is communistic or a plan of the devil to besmirch your character. Mildred Rose thought I should try to telephone to you, but I told her I did not want to try to over rate my privilege as a relative and too, you know how unable I was to speak when I saw you face -to- face -- words fail me when I am overwhelmed emotionally. I awoke in the middle of one night last week with a concern for you to keep your faith and trust in the Lord and keep balanced spiritually, physically and emotionally. Of course, I do pray for you every day and so many people tell me they do too and I appreciate that. MORE Page 2 My T.V. went out two weeks ago, guess it couldn't take it any longer and I am considering stopping my paper ! Yesterday I invited strangers from Springville visiting our church, to come over for dinner. The man looked at my T.V. and said he would send a friend of his to see about getting it fixed - so it pays to befriend strangers! Sheldon came up for Mothers Day a week ago yesterday and brought me a beautiful corsage and helped sing in our choir -- don't think he has ever missed a Mothers Day. The week before, he had been up for a reunion of classes 33 and 34 of Strathmore High School. They had breakfasts, luncheons, banquet, barbecue, alumnae meeting service for deceased members ( of which there were 18). Tom Shimasaki arranged all this and sent many letters to the former students (members). Sheldon had not seen most of them for 40 years and he sure had a good time. I presented four pupils in a Joint Recital of Tulare County Music Teachers Association down at Porterville Junior College yesterday afternoon. My little six year old pupil got the biggest applause of any. I want you to know I am very proud of you, as your Mother would be, you have shown such wonderful courage, faith and ability in all you have done. We are all pulling for you, praying for you and loving you. (sg.) Aunt Jane Mrs. Jane M. Beeson 282 N. Minneapolis, Minnesota 55421 Dear Mr. Field: My Foundation colleagues and I were pleased to learn of your interest in the eventual Richard Nixon Library and Museum, as evidenced by the correspondence and material which have been referred to us from the White House. Since the Foundation was established in 1969, our office has been designated as the central point for the initi- ation of surveys and studies, as well as for the review and compilation of pertinent materials and suggestions, with regard to the creation of an appropriate library and museum facility for President Nixon's papers and artifacts. We have a Planning and Development Committee whose activities have included the following over the past four years: - visits to and studies of existing presidential libraries, and related institutions; - commissioning and study of surveys dealing with population and growth trends and projections, inter-relationships of components of the pro- posed library and museum complex; - site selection visits and studies, and the refinement of criteria for narrowing down possible sites for consideration and final recommendations to the full Board of Trustees; - coordination with National Archives and Records Service professional personnel, particularly those within the Office of Presidential Libraries; - commissioning of a study for the preliminary development of a schematic concept and design to meet the already-defined criteria of an eventual Nixon Center. Mr. Wayne Field May 21, 1973 page 2 The work of the Planning and Development Committee is on-going, and, to this date, no site, concept or design has been ruled completely in or out. You may be sure that any suggestions and proposals that you and your associates might have would be most welcome at any time. Sending them to this office would insure expeditious referral and consideration by the Committee. With appreciation for your interest, and best wishes, Sincerely, femaral Leonard K. K. Firestone Firestone President CC: Ed Nixon May 30, 1973 Dear Rose, Mr. Firestone is truly dedicated to serving the President's best interests, and feels that the most helpful thing he can do at this time is to keep the library/museum develop- ment moving along so that, once the President is able to turn his attention to the Foundation, its composition and its work again, no time will have been lost, and, hopefully, a recommendation with options for the President will be a bright spot on his horizon. It really gave Mr. Firestone a lift to know that you, even with all the burdens on you and your heart during this period, had the library on your mind, and had indicated an interest in it on the part of Mrs. Nixon and Julie. Today he met with the Welton Becket people, who are working on a limited commission of preliminary development, and is very optimistic about them being able to come up with a starting-point concept and design, in sketch and model form, by the end of June. Hence, the enclosed letter to Mrs. Nixon, for your consideration, and possible presentation at the appropriate time. Please advise if you think it should be handled any differently. My prayers constantly go out to you and the President and his Family -- so much depends on the strength and courage of all of you. with affection, Loie
