Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Page 2 of 2 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON Dear Rose: Attached are a poem for the Boss and a prayer I wrote for the White House Prayer Breakfast this morning. The speaker was Cong. John Dellenbach and I hope that it made some impression on him ( the prayer, that is) Sohn PRAYER WRITTEN FOR THE WHITE HOUSE PRAYER BREAKFAST THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1973 O, God, who through Thy omnipotence and wisdom are all things accomplished. Bless Richard Nixon The President of the United States. Impress on the minds of the people that it is Thy will which was done in his election. Let them not be swayed by the angel of darkness from patriotism, honesty and truth in dealing with any crisis which might affect the great land of America. Bless the Congress and guide its Members to deep thought and trial of conscience, when formulating the legislation to govern our people. Bless the Judiciary of this nation that they might act in obedience to the basic laws which Thou hast given to Moses and Thy people for guidance into right. Bless the people and grant them clear and unbiased appraisals of that which they read and hear about our land that equanimity may be shown to all of the world. Lastly, we pray that our nation may lead all rulers to govern with sensibility and bring peace to the world. We ask this O God in great humility. Amen. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON November 8, 1973 Dear Mr. President: "To be turned from one's course by men's opinions, by blame, and by misrepresentation, shows a man unfit to hold an office." - Plutarch, Lives (Fabius) A. D. 46-120 A man who bold in his determination, Cannot be swayed by bad representation. Nor can men's foul opinions nor their blame, Cause him to ever hang his head in shame. Such a strong man is our own President, Who will not by such premises be bent. But steadfast holds up to our God's design, And will not bend to evil and resign. Copy of hand-written letter November 1, 1973 Dear Mr. President Thank you very much for the sentiments expressed in your phone call and letter. I am afraid I was not in any great condition to talk at the time. Your call made me realize all the more how important friends are. We have been friends for many years now. As I have said before, I am often more proud of the enemies I have than of some acquaintances one accumulates over one's life time. Enemies often confirm the soundness of one's own cause and beliefs. Please have heart and accept these sentiments from me as a staunch and admiring friend of yours. With best wishes to Mrs. Nixon and with many thanks to you both for the lovely flowers. FIRESTONE INFO COPIES 44TH FLOOR 515 SOUTH FLOWER STREET LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 12006 November 1, 1973 Mrs. Richard Nixon The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear Mrs. Nixon: Certainly a very bright spot on my desk when I returned to the office today, after having been in the Orient and Europe during the past few weeks, was your very kind and gracious letter expressing continuing interest in our Foundation activities. The preliminary conceptual model I mentioned in my previous correspondence is completed and, while Tom Nickell of U.S.C. (who also serves as a consul- tant to the Foundation), Loie Gaunt and I think it conforms generally to the feelings you have with regard to overall design and proportion, I have held up any inspection and consideration by other members of the Foundation until we have some con- firmation we are headed in the right direction. Tom Nickell and I will be in Philadelphia on U.S.C. business on December 9th. If on either the pre- ceding or following day you or any members of your family would want to see the model and discuss it briefly, our schedule could easily be arranged to be in Washington on either December 8th or 10th -- and I would have the bonus of a visit with my son, Kim, and his family there. In any event, I wanted to let you know we stand ready whenever and wherever it is convenient for us to have the benefit of some Nixon Family guidance. Special good wishes and kindest regards come to all of you from Nicky and me. Sincerely, femaral Leonard K. THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON January 2, 1974 Dear Loie: Here is the letter Marje discussed with you earlier today. It will be greatly appreciated if Mr. Firestone will talk with the appropriate people who have formed the Nixon Law Office Preservation Committee and with Mr. Briner and suggest that the naming of the La Habra office as an historical landmark be deferred until after the expiration of the President's term in office. Many thanks -- love, STATE OF CALIFORNIA-RESOURCES AGENCY RONALD REAGAN, Governor CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL LANDMARKS ADVISORY COMMITTEE DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION POST OFFICE BOX 2390 SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA 95811 November 29, 1973 Honorable Richard M. Nixon President of the United States RE The White House Washington, D.C. 20500 Dear President Nixon: The California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee has received an appli- cation to have your original office site in La Habra recognized as a State Historical Landmark from a group of local citizens in La Habra, California, who have formed the Nixon Law Office Preservation, Incorporated. The California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee, meeting in regular session in Pasadena on November 8, 1973, considered the application and found it advisable to defer approval pending additional information. The criteria by which all landmark applications are measured states that an Historical Land- mark Site, in order to qualify for State registration, must have in some way significantly contributed to the cultural, social, economic, political, mili- tary, etc., heritage of California. There is no doubt that the site which you occupied, when your political views and philosophies were formed and your con- sideration of a career in public service started, is a significant Historical Site in California. The Nixon Law Office Preservation group has gone to great length to gather material showing this to be true as concerns the site of your law office in La Habra. These La Habrans have appeared before our Landmarks Advisory Committee and made an eloquent and effective presentation, but because the granting of Landmark status is an important and significant undertaking, the Committee has temporarily deferred action. We feel very fortunate that we can consult with you on this Landmark Application before taking further action. Often we are forced to use newspaper accounts and primary research evidence to weigh the evidence before making a decision, but because you are the principal in this action, your 1 confirmation that this office in La Habra was the site from which your political career was Launched would remove all doubt for all time that this was truly an Historical Landmark Site. It is the responsibility of the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee to recommend those sites, which in its judgment, they feel are most significant to the history of California, to William Penn Mott, Jr., Director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Director Mott also is the State Historic Preservation Officer for the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, and as such exercises a great deal of care in accepting each of the recommendations of the California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee. The Committee, in turn, studies each application very carefully so that we can be sure that all Historical Landmarks in California are truly significant. Honorable Richard M. Nixon -2- November 29, 1973 President of the United States It was suggested that because you are still in office, you might wish to defer the actual placing of a Landmark Plaque until after the expiration of your present term. This was a passing remark at the recent hearing, but does merit your con- sideration, if it is your wish to delay this actual posting of the plaque, we, of course, would accede to your wishes. " If at all possible, we would like to hear from you on this subject to confirm whether or not you feel that the La Habra office was significant in your early political life, and whether or not you would like this action deferred until your full term of office has expired. Thank you in advance for any consideration given to this request. Sincerely, Brimer Wm S. Briner, Executive Secretary California Historical Landmarks Advisory Committee F-3a/2 STATE OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION US POSIAGE P.O.
