One of our Republican ward committeemen in Chicago, Peter Miller, by name, has run an excellent Republican ward, which I must give him complete credit for. Apparently he had a short time with Dick in Miami and now would like to have ten minutes or so more if it could be arranged. Jackson Boulevard Chicago, Illinois 60604 December 9, 1968 MEMORANDUM TO: Dwight Chapin FROM: Rose Mary Woods I talked with LOU NICHOLS on the 4th and he told me that he would be leaving the city for good on December 13th. He is retiring - building a home on Marco Island in Florida - but it won't be ready until next summer. He will be in Leesburg, Virginia from the 13th on. He did a good during the campaign -- and worked with a lot of people - he wants to see RN for just a few minutes before he leaves on December 13th -- sometime this week. I recommend that RN see him -- he never did get over RN not seeing him after the 1960 election when he actually had a retainer from his company for RN. (He does not want a job. Said he will be glad to do anything we ask him on the outside or serve on some special commission which is a 30 to 60 day thing -- but he is not coming in for a job!!!) December 9, 1968 MEMORANDUM TO: Dwight Chapin FROM: Rose Mary Woods Lou Nichols said that JACK FRAYNE, son-in-law of Loren Berry, has really put the Mutual Broadcasting Company back on its feet. Frayne woul d like to see RN for five minutes and then he will work with the proper person in our group in the future. Frayne says we have to start thinking about ways and means of having RN accurately quoted and we have to start now for the 1970 elections. Frayne will be in Europe from December 6 to the 15th. (Lou Nichols may call you on this one too). MEMORANDUM December 5, appl peg. 1968 TO: Dwight Chapin FROM: Rose Mary Woods John Shaheen called today to say that he would like very much to see the President-Elect for ten minutes sometime next week . He stressed that his request has nothing to do with business - or appointments - something personal he wants to discuss with RN for just ten minutes. Please be in touch with him promptly. December 5, 1968 MEMORANDUM TO: Dwight Chapin FROM: Rose Mary Woods RN's Cutaway will be ready for him to "try on" from Tuesday, December 10, on. It is vital that this appointment be set up as early as possible so they can finish it in time for the Inaugural Ball. The reason for the rush is that they close for a week over the holidays. Please call Mr. Rossi -- Code 215 BA 2-5050 to set up the appointment at RN's convenience. MEMORANDUM December 5, 1968 appl TO: RN FROM: Rose Mary Woods Dr. Milton Eisenhower called me today to say that he had had word through Governor Agnew that the President-Elect would like to talk with him concerning a foreign policy matter anytime after the 10th of December. Dr. Eisenhower is free all day the 16th and could fly up here. When I told him RN would be in Washington that day he said if there would be time for them to get together it would be easy for him to drive over to Washington to see the President-Elect. Also if RN wants him to do so, he would cancel a meeting he has scheduled in Chicago for the 17th and come up that day. PLEASE ADVISE so we can let Dr. Eisenhower know in time to make his own plans. cc: Dwight Chapin Design M - x Appointments - future December 3, 1968 RMW/ma cc; Dwight Dear Bill: Both Rose Mary Woods and Dwight Chapin told me of your telephone call Saturday with the hope that we could get together while you were in town. He said Arthur Summerfield had suggested he call me to work this out. I explained that Dwight Chapin handles all appointments and tried to transfer him to Dwight only to find out that he is not here today. I have told the man there is practically no chance that anyone would cancel out their appointment and that that would be only way he would have a prayer. St. Moritz PL 5-5800 -- Room 1027 November 13, 1968 MEMORANDUM TO: Bob Haldeman Dwight Chapin FROM: RMW John Lodge called Monday morning to say that his Spanish son-in-law was here with a message from the Spanish Foreign Minister. Lodge was going to talk with various Spanish and American officials and write a memo on the subject of our bases in Spain for RMN. However, he called to request an appointment to present the memo personally. I told him I thought it was extremely doubtful but that I did not handle appointments and would pass along the request to you. Please contact him. November 13, 1968 MEMORANDUM TO: Bob Haldeman Dwight Chapin FROM: RMW Hugh O'Brien, movie and TV star, called about an appointment with the President-Elect to discuss the idea he has already talked with Clement Stone about regarding a youth-to-youth program with particular reference to Vietnam. He is in New York for the balance of this week doing shows for NBC and can be reached at the Biltmore, Room 663. For our records, in case of a later appointment, his home number in California is: 213/271-5134. His home address is: 3195 Benedict Canyon Beverly Hills, California Whether he is going to have an appointment or not, I do think a telephone call might be made to him saying we would try to set something up at a later date. I am also attaching a memo from Tom Evans regarding the above. MEMORANDUM FOR: Bob Haldeman FROM: T. W. Evans Re: Youth-to-Youth Program November 11, 1968 This morning Clem Stone gave me the attached memorandum which contains a suggestion by actor Hugh O'Brien for Boys Clubs of America to establish a Youth-to-Youth Program between the U.S. and Viet Nam. An alternative suggestion is enclosed in the memorandum to have the President set this up as a government program. This might be a project for the National Youth Administrator, and I refer it to you pending such appointment if you think the idea has any merit. November 7, 1968 The following notation was dictated over the phone by Hugh O'Brien to be given to Mr. Stone: TO: Mr. Stone FROM: Hugh O'Brien Re: YOUTH TO YOUTH PROGRAM This had to do with the Boys Clubs of America becoming involved in a national project to instigate through the high schools in the country, instead of a people to people program -- a Youth To Youth Program in Viet Nam. I have personally been there twice, my brother was Director of the USO before he returned five months ago and he is now Director of the YM in Hollywood. He also gave two years' service in D'N ang. From my observation, having been there twice and my brother's observation while at USA, we feel this idea is what they need in Viet Nam above everything else -- for the youth to ha ve hope for the future. There is no youth program of any kind or any real training or inspirational program for the youth and one of the problems is that we are not going to get anywhere unless we begin with the youth. We should try to encourage our youth to become active and involved in projects through the Boys Clubs of America, sponsoring in each of their areas a project whereby the high schools in their areas would sponsor or contribute to setting up a Boys Club in a specified area of Viet Nam. Let's assume that the Chicago area could be divided into five areas and each of these areas would be responsible for providing the funds for a Boys Club operation in a specific municipal area in Viet Name such as D'Nang and Hue. Let's say all of the schools could be responsible for contributing to one Boys Club in Hue, which has a population similar to Chicago. The pennies and nickels and dimes that the kids could raise would be more than enough to sustain, aid and set up a project like this. A very meaningful Boys Club type program could be set up for about $15, 000 a year. Rather than have industry sponsor this, if the President could set this up as a Youth Program, the local high school kids could be responsible for setting this up in one : city, providing the funds, etc., in each of the large cities. The Boys Club would administrate and help the schools to do this. The schools would actually do the work in raising the money. Needless to say, he would like to have a few minutes with the President-Elect. I did calm some of his fears by telling him I thought the rumor that Douglas Dillon would be Secretary of State was ridiculous. rmw December 3, 1968 MEMORANDUM TO: Dwight Chapin FROM: Rose Mary Woods Congressman Ogden Reid called today -- said the President-Elect mentioned to him when he was in Westchester that he would like to speak with him on foreign affairs, etc. The Congressman would, of course, like to see him and is available whenever RN can see him. At the particular moment it is ok but this spring I think there is an opportunity to make a major new contribution and I think a good solution to the problem. "I have been around Washington for almost 25 years and during the time I spent there I found that Kuchel was not his own man. He had to check everything with either the Chief Justice or the McClatchy papers. "I do not know whether RMN was aware of that or not. I just wanted him to know this before any real consideration was given to appointing Kuchel to any spot as it would disturb all of his friends to feel that RMN might be betrayed by a member of his administration." Your letter is being referred to Mr. Dwight Chapin who handles the President-Elect's daily schedule. I must be honest and say there is not much chance of working out an appointment for Mr. Del Guercio at this time. As you can well imagine, that list is tremendous.
