Dear Miss Woods:
Many, many thanks for sending along the very thoughtful
and generous check for $5,000 from President Nixon as a
contribution to Boys' Clubs of America. We certainly
appreciate this very wonderful gift and understand it is
to remain anonymous.
Miss Woods, we well know that 1973 was a year of trial
and tribulation to all of you who served the President
so well. We respect and admire your ability to carry on
during these critical days.

My dear Mr. President:
It was so thoughtful of you and Mrs. Nixon to send along
your very generous gift of $5,000 to Boys' Clubs of
America. In keeping with other contributions you have
sent to us, we understand that this is to remain anonymous.
Mr. President, thank you so much for your wonderful display
of courage and great spirit which has meant a great deal to
all of us in the crucial months of 1973. All during these
trying times you set an example of poise and stamina that
will long be remembered in the annals of American leadership.
Our nation is fortunate to have you at the helm during this
critical period.
We pray for you continued strength and good health, and wish
you the greatest success in the years to come.
Very respectfully,

My dear Mr. President:
Your thoughtfulness in having Miss Rose Mary Woods
forward your contribution to us is greatly appreciated.
In spite of stringent controls, we are still having great
difficulty in providing all the services to the Washington
area we would like. With support such as yours, we will
be able to continue.
Although your gift will be kept confidential, it
gives great encouragement to both me and our chapter
manager to know that we have your support. This is
particularly true as we know the demands that are made
on your time.
Many many thanks.
Faithfully yours,

December 27, 1973
MEMORANDUM FOR:
ALEXANDER M. HAIG, JR.
THROUGH:
BRUCE KEHRLI
FROM:
MICHAEL J. FARRELL
SUBJECT:
President's Contribution to
Combined Federal Campaign
For the file, I received the President's contribution to the Combined F ederal
Campaign (by check) on December 21, 1973.
I reached Secretary Weinberger in California that day, and he agreed that the
best way to handle the President's contribution would be for me to deliver it to
him personally upon his return from California on Thursday, December 27, 1973.
This would ensure that the contribution would be turned over to the proper officials
this week, and would ensure that the contribution would be accomplished through
the established confidential procedure.
I personally delivered the check, with the attached letter of transmittal, on
Thursday, December 27, 1973.
ec: Rose Mary Woods
December 27, 1973
Dear Mr. Secretary:
Enclosed is the President's contribution to this year's Combined
Federal Campaign.
As we discussed, we would appreciate this being handled in the
confidential manner you suggested.
Sincerely,
Michael J. Farrell
Special Assistant to the President
The Honorable
Casper W. Weinberger
The Secretary of
Health, Education & Welfare
MEMORANDUM
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
December 20, 1973
MEMORANDUM FOR:
ROSE MARY WOODS
FROM:
J.BRUCE WH WHELIHAN
SUBJECT:
President's Charitable
Contributions
The President's tax returns for the last four years show a decline
in the number and amount of charitable contributions. This has been
interpreted by some members of the press as evidence of a lack of
sensitivity on the part of the First Family toward the needs of those
less fortunate then themselves.
You and I know that this is indeed not the case -- that there has been
no conscious desire on the part of the First Family to cut back on their
contributions. Rather the decline reflects the transfer of the bookkeeping
chores and responsibility for the pr eparation of tax returns to Arthur
Blech's firm from Vincent Andrews. Obviously, no one at Blech's firm
thought or was able to review President and Mrs. Nixon's customary
charitable gifts with them.
With the end of the 1973 tax year fast approaching it is essential that
someone review the President's charitable contributions with him
immediately, so that when we release the 1973 returns they properly
reflect the First Family's generosity. In order to be reported as charitable
gifts in 1973 tax returns, checks or cash must be received by the donee
before the first of the year.
There is no question that you are the best one to go over this matter with
the President. I have reviewed the contributions made over the past 10
years to assist you. Records of the principal donations the Nixon's
repeated -- not including local charitable associations with the Nixon's
residence in California and New York -- are appended on cards. I
have also attached an all inclusive list of contributions from 1963 to
date.
Finally, a table summarizing the President and Mrs. Nixon's contributions
over the years is included below with a list of possible contributions for
1973 to get you started.
Miss Woods
