November 28, 1971
Dear Bob and Dolores:
I am enclosing my check to the Eisenhower
Medical Center as we all agreed on the first
tee. You will note, however, that I have
doubled the amount. After getting a five on
the 12th hole, I thought I should submit
myself to some extra penalty so that I will
do better the next time.
After Pat and I arrived back in San Clemente
we reminisced about the day and we both agreed
that in one sense the Center could well have
been named for Bob and Dolores Hope. You
gave the land, you gave your money, but most
important you gave time and dedication which
no amount of money could possibly buy
(particularly when a half a billionaire was
involved!)
As far as we both are concerned, the Center
will be a memorial not only to President
Eisenhower but also to two splendid and very
generous Americans - Bob and Dolores Hope.
Sincerely,
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Hope

Dear Mr. President:
I had signed the enclosed letter to
members of the class of 1937 and was about to
mail it to you when the Alumni Office called and
told me of your recent contribution. Therefore,
I now send my thanks and also for the school and
your associates in the class - particularly for
the increase.
The salutation of the letter caused me
some thought since personal salutation should not
be lightly used for our most distinguished member,
but I decided you'd like to be addressed as a
class member.
With best personal regards,
Sincerely,
Bill Pender

Dear Dick:
It's incredible - next fall the class of 1937 will hold
its 35th reunion.
This date is not mentioned to remind you of age - we're
a long way from being old crocks. I have agreed to serve as
class Gift Chairman to encourage all of us to recognize this
memorable anniversary with a significant gift to the Law School.
We're all barraged with requests for contributions, but
there are good reasons why this one should get special atten-
tion. I believe you will agree that we received a superior
education at Duke Law School, and its excellent continuing
reputation greatly benefits its graduates. Since we grad-
uated, it has improved its physical facilities with a new
building, has tripled its enrollment and expanded the area
of study to meet the increasing complexity of the profession.
Its nationwide recognition is reflected in the fact that last
year's freshman class was picked from 2,000 applicants.
I feel sure you share my opinion that it is very impor-
tant that schools like Duke continue to give a high quality
education to new members of the profession. The school de-
serves and needs our support. A top flight school needs
really substantial amounts of money. A law school like Duke
must depend on alumni support to greater degree than other
university units which receive greater help from business,
foundations and government.
This year a gift has extra value because the Ford
Foundation will grant one dollar for every four donated.
All our gifts will go to the school's educational budget.
I hope that you will give this request your immediate
attention and that you will help make the 35th an impressive
anniversary by giving even more generously than you think
your circumstances permit. I enclose a pledge card and reply
envelope for your convenience.
I look forward to seeing you next year.
Sincerely,
Bill
Wm. R. Perdue, Jr.

Dear Mr. President:
Thank you very much for your 1971-72 Loyalty Fund
gift. It is a major contribution and is greatly appre-
ciated by the University and by the many alumni and
friends who are leading this year's campaign effort.
Moreover, your participation helps support the
University's educational programs and contributes toward
the achievement of a Loyalty Fund goal of $1,000,000.
Regardless of other gifts Duke might receive, the Loyalty
Fund remains fundamental to institutional strength and
educational quality.
Thank you again for your generosity.

Dear Mr. Speaker:
I thought you might like to know that when the
President was signing the check for his con-
tribution to the Christmas Seals Campaign
he asked that it be made in memory of your

present at the time that during your years

of the burial of your beloved wife he wanted
to do this as a special tribute to her.

Mr. President:
Your generous donation to the Christmas Seal Campaign last year
denoted your keen interest in our work against tuberculosis, other
respiratory diseases, and air pollution.
The relentless battle we have waged against TB since 1902 is not
yet won. Even though there has been a dramatic decline in the incidence
of the disease at the national level, TB clings stubbornly to its prey
in large cities, including the Nation's Capital. Other chronic respi-
ratory diseases are increasing at an alarming rate, and air pollution
compounds the breathing problems so many of our fellow citizens face daily.
Your help and that of tens of thousands of Washingtonians has enabled
us to gain ground toward the solution of the social problems which keep
perpetuating TB in our midst; to continue to aid chronic respiratory disease
victims in finding a new lease on "the breath of life" through patient
services; to carry out year-round anti-smoking activities; to sponsor
research and special training for physicians, nurses, and paramedical
personnel; and to support the air conservation programs of our affiliate,
the Metropolitan Washington Coalition for Clean Air.
A personal contribution from you to the Christmas Seal Fund this year
would add a new dimension to the importance of our programs for 1972 in
the District of Columbia, and would be accepted most gratefully. Your
support is literally a "Matter of Life and Breath.'

Dear Mr. President
After due consideration I have decided not to dwell
on the fact that I taught Tricia for two years in Sunday School
at Metropolitan Methodist Church, or that my son was in love
with Julie for four years at Horace Mann, or that Dr. Latch and
I prayed for you to become President for eight years (1960-1968)
but to approach you with a bargain.
Duke University is celebrating its 25th Loyalty Fund
Anniversary and we hope to achieve a goal of $I million. This
is vital to all of us because the Ford Foundation has promised
a renewal of their "one-for-four" challenge grant. An alumnus
gift of $100 means $125 for Duke; $1,000 will mean $I, 250, etc.
An opportunity we must not miss.
All alumni are asked to double their pledges of last
year. The new pledges are payable by June 30, 1972.
I understand you have given generous support to your
former legal alma mater in the past and we hope you will be
in a position to double your pledge this year.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration.
My side of the bargain is I'll campaign for you on Frank Dale's
Committee.

I do not believe I have written to thank you for
your gift to the Duke University Loyalty Fund for this

I will let someone else take it on next year. However,
it is people like you who make it an easier one, and I

hopefully, we will make it.

Dear lassmate:
You have heard recently from L. Stacy Weaver, Jr. LLB'53, President-
elect of the Law School Alumni Association. You know that our Loyalty
Fund gifts will now be incorporated into the annual budget of the Law
School to support directly its educational programs.
Equally important, in my way of thinking, is the fact that our
financial support will help preserve the superior educational quality
that has been a hallmark of the Law School for so many years. Everyone
is aware of the importance of legal education these days, and of its
even greater importance in the decade ahead. By the same measure, no
one needs to be reminded that high quality is also a necessary ingredient.
Our Law School is doing everything possible to insure that its
educational programs meet the standards of excellence that we ourselves
experienced. Here is one of the major reasons why our annual support
means so much to the School. The amounts we give annually through the
Loyalty Fund enable us to assume a share of that which is involved in
maintaining and strengthening the position of leadership that belongs
to the Duke Law School.
What I am saying is that we can all take pride in the job being
done by the Law School, both from a professional standpoint and from
the standpoint of being more than just casually associated with it.
And, speaking quite frankly, if the Law School is to continue its role
of providing superior educational programs, it will need much more help
from us, the men and women who have taken its degrees and benefited
from its training. I might add that every leading law school in the
country has attained its position of leadership, in large measure, as
a result of strong alumni support.
Our Law School goal this year is $60,000, part of the overall
Loyalty Fund goal of $1,000,000. Won't you use the enclosed pledge
card and envelope today to let Duke know of your concern and your
support? Pledges may be paid, as usual, any time between now and
next June 30.

Q. I contributed to the Loyalty Fund last April.
Why am I being solicited again in the same year?
A. The Loyalty Fund, like the University's finan-
cial operations, is conducted on a fiscal calendar,
that is, from July 1 to June 30. Contributions re-
ceived last spring were credited to the 1969-70
Loyalty Fund campaign which ended June 30,
1970. The current 1970-71 campaign began this
past July 1 and will conclude next June 30.
Q. Well, I'd like to give, but a small gift really
won't help much, will it?
A. But it will indeed. A rising tide lifts all the
boats. Duke gratefully welcomes gifts of all sizes,
and it needs all kinds of gifts from one kind of
alumnus or alumna-the kind who loves the Uni-
versity for what it is and what it does and who
wants to share in its continuing service.
Q. How much should I give?

Dear Rose Mary:
The President very graciously sent me a
check for $5.00, with a note in which he mentions
that he would keep my $5 bill as a souvenir.
Unfortunately, I have to do the same thing with
his check, so will you thank him and advise his
auditor that the $5 check will never be cashed,
so that they can make the proper adjustments.
For your information, and his too, if you
would like to tell him, he is gaining heavily,
from the people I talk with. Unfortunately, his
so-called leading opposition, when on TV, puts me
sound asleep, and I am afraid he will do it to the
nation, too.

I have one thought which may be of value
regarding the new youth vote, which I will get to

check for five dollars to cover your loss. John
Connally tells me you need not report this since
the exchange is even.
I hope we have better luck the next time!
With warm personal regards,
Sincerely,
Mr. Freeman Gosden
