This last weekend at Camp David the President was supplied with three
dozen each of old fashioned glasses and highball glasses which have the
Presidential Seal and the Camp David name.
One dozen of each will remain at the residence and will be distributed
between there and the EOB office. The remainder will go to San Clemente
and Key Biscayne, and I will insure that they are delivered.
If the President wants to buy them, as was indicated to me previously,

The attached bills are for clocks the Nixons have given
as wedding gifts.
If there is any other way of handling them, I don't know
about it and would appreciate your advising me if they
should go to someone else rather than to you.
While the bills are old as you will note from the dates on
them, we have only received them in the last couple of
weeks.

I notice that both Lucy's note and the order
for the clock are dated June 10, in case that is

Enclosed please find a signature
card from the United California Bank in
Placentia, California, for the savings ac-
count that the President has there. As I
munderstand it, this particular branch
office serves the Yorba Linda area and when
the bank opened, they wrote to the President
(this all occurred before he became Presi-
dent) and asked him to open the first savings
account. Apparently, he wrote back saying
that it would be his pleasure and sent them
his check for $100. The account as of
12/31/70 contained $121.14 ($21.14 has ac-
crued from interest). The bank has requested
that a signature card be signed for the ac-
count since they do not have one in their
files so that the President and/or Mrs.
Nixon may deposit or withdraw funds should
they ever decide to do so. At your con-
venience, would you please have the President
and Mrs. Nixon sign the card where indicated
and return it to me for forwarding to the
bank. Thanks very much.

Dear President Nixon:
On behalf of the Marshall University Foundation
I want to acknowledge your thoughtfulness in contri-

In the face of such an enormous tragedy all
of us feel most inadequate. Yet we know that the
tragedy itself has resulted in many financial problems
which, while yet unassessed, are likely to emerge.
The most fitting memorial for those who perished is to
provide for those who survive. You can take comfort

I wish to thank you, on behalf of the President, for
your letter of December 11. Since the check to which
you referred was made out to the TV Memorial Fund
and was for both Wichita State and Marshall College,
we do not feel it would be appropriate to give the

The Board of Directors of the D.C. Tuberculosis and
Respiratory Disease Association gratefully acknowledges
your recent personal contribution of one hundred dollars
toward the 1970 Christmas Seal Campaign in the District
of Columbia.
Your generous gift denoted your deep concern for the
health and environmental problems which face the Federal
City, and it will be used to boost the effectiveness of
the Association's programs for 1971, which include the
eradication of tuberculosis, control of other chronic
respiratory diseases, air conservation, and the improve-
ment of the general health and welfare of the community.

Mr. President:
While you are reading this letter you will breathe in and out
about 9 times
and never give it a thought. Yet, well over a
million Americans, victims of emphysema, tuberculosis, and other
chronic respiratory diseases aren't so lucky.
Many, too many, of these people are right here in Washington,
where tuberculosis still thrives and air pollution compounds the
breathing problems that our citizens must face day after day.
In the past year we have taken new directions to help eradicate
TB in the District by making the many unsolved social problems which
keep perpetuating the disease our primary target. We continue to
help chronic respiratory disease victims find a new lease on their
"breath of life" through patient services; conduct year-round smoking
and health activities; sponsor research and special training for
physicians, nurses, and paramedical personnel. Also, our Metropolitan
Washington Coalition for Clean Air has successfully completed its first
year of activities to clean our air through legislation, community and
school education.
The familiar, friendly Christmas Seals enclosed are one way to
help us continue what we have begun. Your support is literally
"A Matter of Life and Breath." A personal contribution from you to the
Christmas Seal Fund would add a new dimension to the importance of our
programs for 1971 in the District of Columbia, and would be accepted
most gratefully.
Sincerely yours,

Your Christmas Seal Association depends on funds from many sources to carry on its disease-fighting work. Should
you desire to make a gift as described below, you can be assured it will have enduring value in the crusade against emphy-
sema, tuberculosis, bronchitis, asthma and other crippling respiratory diseases.
WILLS AND BEQUESTS
Your attorney will be happy to assist you in the proper wording of a provision in your will
for the District of Columbia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Associatiation.
MEMORIAL GIFTS
There is no more fitting way to honor the memory of a departed friend or loved one than by
making a Memorial Gift in his name. All such gifts are acknowledged with a letter to the
family of the deceased.
SPECIAL GIFTS
Contributions can be made to commemorate an anniversary or event, or to honor a friend or
business associate. Particularly appropriate is a gift in the name of someone who is having a
personal battle against respiratory disease.

Dear Mr. President:
Mrs. Coffin and I wish to express to you and Mrs. Nixon our deep appreci-
ation for your very cordial welcome and hospitality. The experience of
participating in the White House Worship Service was a high privilege. I
appreciated your generous introduction and personal identification publicly
with East Whittier Friends Church. It was a particular delight to work
with Ethel Waters in such a setting. She was great!
I have taken seriously your suggestion to explore the possibility of keeping
the church door open to the public. We will have to construct a way for
the front door and steps to be open to the boulevard. Perhaps by purchas-
ing the property just to the east of the church building, we can remove the
old house that is there, making the church building more visible from
Whittier Boulevard and giving opportunity for an access ramp and steps. We
will also try to arrange to install a contribution box as you suggested.
For the program of the church for 1971, we anticipate the use of the facil-
ities daily for such activities as a day care center, Laubach tutoring
program, Boy Scout troop and Explorer Post meetings, small study groups,
youth groups, business men's breakfasts and luncheons and women's circle
meetings.
Your very generous gift to the Expansion Fund is deeply appreciated. It
will make possible the painting and landscaping of the sanctuary which will
present an appearance of vitality to the community.
The gift of the Bible which you personally signed will hold a treasured
place in our lives. We look forward to the time when you will find it
possible to worship with us here at East Whittier.
Sincerely,
Engine Coffin

Dear Mrs. Coffin:
At the White House Church Service, the President
recalls that both you and Dr. Coffin referred to
the expansion fund for East Whittier Friends
Church. He would like the enclosed check to be
used for purposes of augmenting that fund.
Because of the huge number of requests for con-

would prefer that this contribution be kept confi-

Dear President Nixon:
As you perhaps know, our State Capitol building last year was
designated by the Department of the Interior as a national historic
landmark.
We in Connecticut are most proud of our Capitol building and
we are anxious to further enhance its beauty by embarking on a tree
planting program for the Capitol grounds.
Our Capitol grounds is comprised of 14.5 acres and a competent
horticulturist has worked out a plan for an additional 250-300 trees
to be planned. The great majority will be dwarf trees, eight to ten
feet tall, such as pink and white dogwood, lovanzan cherry, hawthorne,
flowering crab apple, Japanese red maple, white birch, mountain ash
and a few will be large shade trees.
This program will be achieved entirely by private funds at no
expense to our state government. We have invited all our elected
state officials, members of the General Assembly, Connecticut senators
and congressmen, commissioners and their deputies to purchase trees.
We would be deeply honored if you would care to purchase a tree
in your name. The tree would be selected, planted and cared for under
supervision of the Public Works Department of Connecticut. It would
be a large shade tree and would be given a place of prominence with
an appropriate marker. You would, of course, receive a certified map
locating the tree planted in your name.
25.00
If you would care to have a tree planted would you kindly remit
a
check for $100.00 to the Connecticut State Capitol Preservation and
Restoration commission (C.S.C.P.R.C. -Tree Fund), who has agreed to handle
all funds. The check should be sent to my attention: Edward J. Kozlowski,
Commissioner of Public Works, Room 491, State Office Building, Hartford,
Connecticut 06115.
We hope to start this ambitious project as soon as possible
and would appreciate your reply at your earliest convenience.
Very truly yours,
STATE CAPITOL GROUNDS

The President did think this was probably a
good idea if you want to try to work it out
properly.
I do wonder about one thing -- the enclosure
indicates a check for $25 and the letter
says $100.
I assume you will want to check this out
with our Connecticut people. When you need
the check please let me know.
Thanks.
