Nixon 20 Broad Street New York, New York Re: Sharon Prospect Barber County, Kansas Dear Mr. Nixon: The well being drilled on this prospect has reached a total depth of 4400 feet. The Mississippi lime, which was the main prospective producing zone, was encountered at 4372 feet. A test through the drill pipe of the top thirteen feet of this formation recovered no oil or gas. A second drill- stem test of the next fifteen feet (from 4385 to 4400 feet) resulted in the recovery of 4000 feet of live, gassy oil with the testing tool open one hour. Casing is being cemented at the total depth today and after cement has set for a few days the oil bearing interval will be opened by gun perforating the casing. The results to date indicate that this will result in an excellent oil well. The top of the Mississippi lime was encountered at an elevation considerably lower than anticipated. The local structural trap believed to be present under the prospect is apparently either absent or has little relief. The oil accumulation encountered in the discovery well now appears to be the result of a porosity trap. The size and importance of this discovery cannot be determined at the present time. The performance of the discovery well will be observed for a few months. If it is satisfactory, additional development will be recommended. It is a pleasure to advise you that your first venture in the oil business appears to be successful. Very truly yours, KEPLINGER AND WANENMACHER 918 J.M. Nixon 20 Broad Street New York, New York Re: Drilling Prospect T 32S, R 10W Barber County, Kansas Dear Mr. Nixon: Mr. Lund has suggested that I write you and explain the delay in the drilling of the prospect captioned above. The owner of the oil and gas lease on the NE/4 Section 14 had agreed to contribute two 40-acre tracts in return for the drilling of the well in the NE/4 SE/4 Section 14. This agreement was informal. A formal agreement was to be prepared when definite arrangements had been made to drill the well. When the owner of the lease was approached to obtain the formal agreement it developed that he no longer had an oil or gas lease on this tract. An attempt was then made to obtain an oil and gas lease from the landowner. He refused to grant a lease because a portion of the royalty was in possession of others for a term of years. This term royalty will expire in approximately 2 years if the tract is not producing. The landowner owns most of the royalty and no one would drill on the tract unless they had a lease on the landowner's interest. By refusing to lease, the landowner can effectively block development and the title to the outstanding royalty would revert to him at the expiration of the term because it would not be producing. Arrangements have been made to acquire this outstanding term royalty and assign it to the landowner in return for an oil and gas lease on the entire royalty interest. This transaction is being completed and the well will be started immediately after the oil and gas lease on this tract is obtained. We are sorry for the circumstances which caused this delay and trust that it has caused you no inconvenience. Very truly yours, KEPLINGER AND WANENMACHER JMW:nsh J. M. Wanenmacher cc: Mr. Russell T. Lund Loldo March 12, 1965 Dear Russ: Supplementing my letter to you of yesterday with regard to my participation in the oil drilling project I, of course, will be prepared to pay my share in the event any additional wells are drilled under the circumstances set forth in Mr. Wanenmacher's letter. I did not want you to get the impression from my letter yesterday that I desired to limit my participation to the one well only. With best personal regards, Sincerely, Mr. Russell T. N. Vanenmacher's letter of March 4 to m. As I understand, the initial cost of my interest will be $7,000 and the maximum cost will be $17,000 if a pumping well develops. As soon as I receive a bill for my share, I shall send a reimbursement for the amount involved. with every good wish, Sincerely, Mr. Russell T. Lund 1450 West Lake Street Minnespolis, Minnesota cet J. M. Wanenmacher C. H. KEPLINGER J. M. WANENMACHER KEPLINGER AND WANENMACHER PETROLEUM ENGINEERS KENNEDY BUILDING TULSA 3, OKLAHOMA March 4, 1965 Mr. Richard M. Nixon 20 Broad Street New York, New York Re: Sharon Prospect Barber County, Kansas Dear Mr. Nixon: On this date I recommended that Mr. Russell Lund participate in a drilling deal in Barber County, Kansas, known as the Sharon Prospect. Mr. Lund accepted this offering and requests that I furnish you information about it. He also requested me to advise you that you are welcome to participate to the extent of one-third of his interest. The prospect involves the drilling of a well to a depth of 4400 feet to test the Mississippian limestone which is expected to produce oil. The oil and gas leases shown in yellow on the accompanying map total 560 acres. These are now in the possession of Sierra Petroleum Co., Inc. In addition, the two 40-acre tracts shown in blue are owned by a different operator and will be assigned upon completion of the well. The 160-acre tract outlined in red is unleased and will be acquired, if possible, at a cost not expected to exceed $1,600. The leases are subject to a 1/16 of 7/8 overriding royalty which is reserved by an inde- pendent geologist who originated the deal. Sierra will drill the well and assign a three-quarter interest in their leases. Mr. Lund will pay them $15,100 for this three-quarter interest with the well drilled to its total depth. This price includes surface casing, geological services, electric log, etc. Mr. Lund will also pay approximately $1,700 for his share of the cost of the present oil and gas leases. We estimate that Mr. Lund's total cost for drilling into the producing zone and acreage cost, including the acquisition of the 160 acres now unleased, will be $20,000. In the event the well is productive we expect that an additional expenditure in the amount of $40,000 will be required for casing, completion, and production equipment. Mr. Lund's three-quarter share will be $30,000. The accompanying map shows that the prospect is immediately west of an oil producing area. The oil wells, shown as encircled dots, are the southwestern extremity of a large oil field. These oil wells shown on the map will obtain a moderate recovery which is sufficient to return the expenditures for develop- ment and operation and earn a small profit. The geological data indicate a strong possibility that the same oil bearing beds will be at a higher structural position on the prospect acreage in which event larger recoveries are anticipated because of a thicker productive section. We have advised Mr. Lund that we believe there is at least an even chance of obtaining oil production of the same caliber as the wells a short distance east and a one-out-of-four chance of obtaining much better oil recovery than that obtained from these wells. Attention is called to the fact that development will be on 40-acre spacing. If the first test is successful we would expect a total of four to six oil wells. I would like to repeat that your cost for the first well would be approximately $7,000 if a dry hole and $17,000 if a pumping oil well for a one-quarter working interest. You would pay one-fourth of the actual cost of subsequent wells. The allowable production would be 43 barrels of oil per well per day. I will not burden you with a discussion of the geological reasons for our recommendation. However, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Please accept my apologies for not con- necting your name and you. It was a pleasure to meet you via telephone conversation and I am looking forward to a more personal meeting at some future date. Mr. Lund has asked us to continue watching for drilling deals with merit in his behalf. It is our understanding that you may participate in some of these ventures.
