Sterner, of Menges Mills, Pa. wrote to the compiler of these notes asking for assistance in determining the forebears of Senator Richard Nixon. She was a friend and former neighbor of Senator Nixon's mother and wrote at the sugges- tion of Miss Jessica C. Ferguson, Genealogist at the Pennsylvania State Library. The family knew of George Nixon who was killed at Gettysburg. They thought that he was likely a native of Washington, County, Pa. A search of Washington County court records showed two earlier Georges with George, Sr. purchasing a farm at Washington, Pa. in 1803. George Sr. 's son, Seeds Nixon, was the connecting link. Delaware records showed a marriage of George Nixon and Sarah Seeds in 1775. Ohio records listed a Revolutionary veteran named George Nixon, who had a son Seeds. The pension application (S8919) of George, and wills and deeds of New Castle County, Del. showed that George Nixon, Sr., who bought a farm at Washington, Pa.. in 1803, was a son of James Nixon of Delaware; that he went to Ohio in 1830. Later research showed that the Revolutionary veteran died in Illinois in 1842 at the age of 90. He was the grand- father of George Nixon III, who died at Gettysburg in 1863. The Civil War soldier was the grandfather of Richard Nixon's father. Research turned next to the Trimmer family of Washington County, for the Civil War soldier had married a Trimmer. By a roundabout way invol- ving amateur radio a copy was obtained of the manuscript Genealogy of the Trimmer Family, written in 1904 by David Trimmer of McArthur, Ohio. Correspondence with the parents of Richard Milhous Nixon showed that on the maternal side his Milhous, Griffith and Burdg ancestors had lived within 40 miles of Washington, Pa. This eventually led to the tracing of all lines. The results are here presented. The compiler of this record found the Nixons listed as members on the rolls of the First United Methodist Church (Washington), for which he is records custodian. A sampler which had puzzled Miss Florence Eisele, of Natchez, Miss. for many years turned out to bear the names of members of the Nixon and Wilson families. To search out some lines such as Moore required many years of digging - only to end up with the discovery of the record in a book printed in Philadelphia in 1897. It was found that the parents of both Nixon and Milhous grandfathers were married in Washington County, Pa.: George Nixon - Margaret Trimmer 1843 in a Methodist ceremony; Joshua V. Milhous - Elizabeth P. Griffith 1847 in a Quaker one. The excellent Quaker records facilitated searching. A number of the Nixon ancestors were ministers in the Society of Friends. All the maternal lines are Quaker, and on the paternal side, Scothorn, Moore, Clemson, Strode, Dickinson, Miller, and possibly some in Maryland. 4 Not counting families written up in county histories, the following lines are known to have published genealogies: Scothorn, Trimmer, Moore, Dickinson, Clemson, Milhous, Mendenhall, Griffith, Price, Burdg, Hemingway, Cattell, Potts, Gaskill, Lippincott, Shinn. Nearly two hundred persons answered letters written by the compiler. Many were happy to spend time digging through the old records. Family, church, court, census and pension records were consulted, as well as many family and county histories. A special note should be added about the calendar. Before the Gre- gorian calendar was adopted in 1752, in records, especially Quaker, the tenth month was Dec ember and the year began March 25. Eleven days had to be added to 1700-dates. For example, George Washington was born Feb. 11-1731 (old Style) or Feb. 22-1732 (New Style). In Quaker records this would be 12m 11 1731/32. Some dates in this book may be incorrect because writers did not understand the calendar changes. Examples are: Old New 10m 1 1741 Dec. 1-1741 11m 1 1741/42 Jan. 1-1742 12m 1 1741/42 Feb. 1-1742 lm 24 1741/42 Mar. 24-1742 lm 25 1741/42 Mar. 25-1742 2m 1 1742 Apr. 1-1742 These examples do not take into consideration the eleven added days. President Nixon was born in California. His father was born in Ohio; his mother in Indiana. His parents, two of his grandparents and two of his great-grandparents died in California. All of his grandparents, all of his great-grandparents and 13 of his 16 great- great-grandparents lived at one time in Ohio. The sixteen were born in: Pa. 6; Md. 4; N. J. 3; Del. 2; Ohio 1. The places of death are: Ohio 7; Iowa 3; Ind. 2, Pa. 2; Mo. 1; Md. 1. There are a number of unusual facts concerning the Nixon ancestors: (a) they all lived in a narrow band from the region of Baltimore to that of Newark; several went from Mass. or Long Island to N. J.; (b) on the average they landed in the U. S. about 1695; there is no record of any landing after 1775; (c) two-thirds were Quaker, coming from both sides of the family; (d) many of the families are well-known and have published genealogies; (e) a conservative estimate is that over two million Americans are "cousins" of President Nixon, going out as far as 9th cousins; (f) except for the Trimmers all the lines go back to the British Isles, mainly England, with a few Scottish and Welsh families, and several families stopping in Ireland on the way to America; (g) on the maternal side there is considerable longevity, for the first four generations the average age is 80 (for the paternal it is 60); and then for the great-great-great-grandparente on the maternal side the average is 77, at time of death. 7 Richard Milhous Nixon had eight great-grandparents, two of whom died after he was born. The eight branches are: NIXON - the earliest record is in 1731 when James Nixon bought a farm in Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co., Del. He may have come from Ire- land. His descendants migrated to Washington Co., Pa., Ohio and Cal. Miss Ferguson and Dr. Lane assisted the compiler in this branch. TRIMMER - John Trimmer, of German origin, is listed in Hunterdon Co., N.J. in 1739. He probably migrated to New Jersey some years earlier. This familyHived in Morris Co., N.J., Juniata Co., Pa. and Washington Co., Pa. where a Trimmer married a Nixon. The Genealogy by David Trim- mer was valuable. This has never been published. WADSWORTH - the name of Thomas Wadsworth appears in Harford Co., Md. in 1741 when he was married. His origin is not known. The family moved to Ohio where a Wadsworth married a Nixon. Miss Rebecca Wadsworth supplied helpful family data, as did Robert Barnes and Florence Main. MOORE - James Moore migrated from Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, Ireland to Lancaster Co., Penna. sometime before 1759. The family were Quakers. James' father, also James, was married in Ireland in 1714. The family likely originated in England. The movement was west from Lancaster Co. to Centre Co. and Allegheny Co. in Pa. and then to Ohio, where a Moore married a Wadsworth. The chief source is The Ancestors and Descendants of Andrew Moore by J.A.M. Passmore, Phila. 1897. Others assisting were: Mrs. Ruth M. Smith with the Lillian Rowell charts, Warren W. Nixon and Florence Main. This branch was the hardest to trace. MILHOUS - Thomas Milhous, born 1699, went from Timahoe, Co. Kildare, Ireland to Chester Co., Pa. in 1730 (settling nine miles west of James Nixon). His grandfather, also Thomas, was living in Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim in 1669, when John , father. of the younger Thomas, was born. The family may have originated in England. From Chester Co. the Mil- houses moved to Ohio, Ind. and Cal. Mrs. Martha Gibbons provided 8 histories by William Milhous (b. 1839) and Mrs. Dorothy Z. Milhous. The Milhous Bibles, at the Library of Congress, were used in the 1969 inaug ration of the President. GRIFFITH - William Griffith went from Wales to New Castle Co., Del. about 1700. His family moved to York Co., Pa. and then Washington Co., Pa. where a Griffith-Milhous marriage occurred. James Griffith 1808- 1892, of York Co., Pa. wrote a history of the family. Mrs. Florence Sterner supplied a copy from the original in the York Co. Histl. Socy. BURDG - the Burdg family is found at Great Neck, Long Island in the 1670's. From here they went to Monmouth Co., N.J., Fayette Co., Pa. and Ohio, where a Milhous married a Burdg. The main source is Burdg and Allied Families by Howard G. Burdg, Conway, N.H. 1950. HEMINGWAY - the Hemingways appear in Roxbury, Mass. about 1634. They then moved to Burlington Co., N.J. and then Ohio, where a Hemingway married a Burdg. The chief source is Ralph Hemmenway and His Descendants by C.A.H. Newton, Napierville, Ill. 1932-43. Into the above eight branches married eight more: WILSON - New Castle Co., Del.; Washington, Pa. HUNT - Washington Co., Pa. likely from N.J. This line has yet to be traced. LYTLE - Baltimore Co., Md. Data supplied by Robert Barnes. BROWN - Ireland; Frederick Co., Va.; Hampshire Co., W.Va.; Perry Co, Ohio. Data supplied by Florence Main. VICKERS - Bucks Co. and Chester Co., Pa. PRICE - A.Arundel Co., Md. Data supplied by A. Russell Slagle. MATTHEWS - New Castle Co., Del.; Baltimore Co., Md. MALMSBURY - Burlington Co., N.J.; Columbiana (now Mahoning) Co, Ohio Help received from John W. Haines. In all there are about one hundred ancestral lines mainly concen- trated within seventy miles of Wilmington, Del. where the first Nixon appeared. 9 16 MAIN LINES (earliest record) Br Brown Mi Milhous Tr Bu Burdg Mo Moore Gr Griffith 0 Ni Nixon miles 50 ?Hu He Hemingway Pr Price Hu Hunt Bu Tr Trimmer Ly Lytle Vi Vi Vickers (from Mal Malmsbury PHILA. He worked as a motorman in Columbus, Ohio from 1901 to 1907 before moving to Whittier, Cal - a warmer climate. At a party given by the conductor with whom he worked he met Hannah Milhous. After marriage they lived in Whittier, Lindsay, Yorba Linda and returned in 1922 to East Whittier, where they operated the Nixon Market. From 1947 to 1950 they lived on a farm at Menges Mills, York Co, Pa. Again for health reasons they returned to Whittier and later lived at nearby La Habra, California. 1. He was married by Rev Thomas M Hudson, Methodist presiding elder, at the home of his sister, Eleanor Scothorn, in South Strabane Twp. He lived in Smith Twp, likely at Midway until he and his family moved to Elk Twp, Vinton Co, Ohio in 1853. His father, George II, had moved to Vinton Co in 1844. On Nov 9-1861 George enlisted in the Union Army. The records at Washington list him as: age 40, farmer, 5-2 feet, brown eyes, light complexion and hair. He was mustered into service at Waverly, Pike Co, Ohio as a private in Company B, 73rd Regiment of Ohio Infantry. His regiment reached Gettys- burg, Pa at 2 pm Jul 1-1863 and went into position near what is now the National Cemetery. On July 2 there was sharpshooting and on July 3 there was battery fire. George was fatally wounded and died a few days later. (The exact date is not known.) His grave is close to the spot where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous dedicatory address. The marker reads: GEORGE NIXON CO. B REGT. 73 Just ninety years later on Jul 5-1953 his great-grandson, Richard Mil- hous Nixon visited and placed flowers on the grave. The widow survived him for 20 months. At her death Mar 18-1865 she left eight children, ages 21 to 5. See her widow's pension records in the National Archives (wc 84443). 1. Sterner, of Menges Mills,\nPa. wrote to the compiler of these notes asking for assistance in\ndetermining the forebears of Senator Richard Nixon. She was a friend\nand former neighbor of Senator Nixon's mother and wrote at the sugges-\ntion of Miss Jessica C. Ferguson, Genealogist at the Pennsylvania State\nLibrary. The family knew of George Nixon who was killed at Gettysburg.\nThey thought that he was likely a native of Washington, County, Pa.\nA search of Washington County court records showed two earlier\nGeorges with George, Sr. purchasing a farm at Washington, Pa. in 1803.\nGeorge Sr. 's son, Seeds Nixon, was the connecting link. Delaware records\nshowed a marriage of George Nixon and Sarah Seeds in 1775. Ohio records\nlisted a Revolutionary veteran named George Nixon, who had a son Seeds.\nThe pension application (S8919) of George, and wills and deeds of New\nCastle County, Del. showed that George Nixon, Sr., who bought a farm\nat Washington, Pa.. in 1803, was a son of James Nixon of Delaware; that\nhe went to Ohio in 1830. Later research showed that the Revolutionary\nveteran died in Illinois in 1842 at the age of 90. He was the grand-\nfather of George Nixon III, who died at Gettysburg in 1863. The Civil\nWar soldier was the grandfather of Richard Nixon's father.\nResearch turned next to the Trimmer family of Washington County, for\nthe Civil War soldier had married a Trimmer. By a roundabout way invol-\nving amateur radio a copy was obtained of the manuscript Genealogy of\nthe Trimmer Family, written in 1904 by David Trimmer of McArthur, Ohio.\nCorrespondence with the parents of Richard Milhous Nixon showed that\non the maternal side his Milhous, Griffith and Burdg ancestors had lived\nwithin 40 miles of Washington, Pa. This eventually led to the tracing of\nall lines. The results are here presented.\nThe compiler of this record found the Nixons listed as members on\nthe rolls of the First United Methodist Church (Washington), for which\nhe is records custodian. A sampler which had puzzled Miss Florence\nEisele, of Natchez, Miss. for many years turned out to bear the names\nof members of the Nixon and Wilson families.\nTo search out some lines such as Moore required many years of\ndigging - only to end up with the discovery of the record in a book\nprinted in Philadelphia in 1897.\nIt was found that the parents of both Nixon and Milhous grandfathers\nwere married in Washington County, Pa.: George Nixon - Margaret Trimmer\n1843 in a Methodist ceremony; Joshua V. Milhous - Elizabeth P. Griffith\n1847 in a Quaker one.\nThe excellent Quaker records facilitated searching. A number of the\nNixon ancestors were ministers in the Society of Friends. All the maternal\nlines are Quaker, and on the paternal side, Scothorn, Moore, Clemson,\nStrode, Dickinson, Miller, and possibly some in Maryland.\n4\nNot counting families written up in county histories, the\nfollowing lines are known to have published genealogies:\nScothorn, Trimmer, Moore, Dickinson, Clemson, Milhous,\nMendenhall, Griffith, Price, Burdg, Hemingway, Cattell,\nPotts, Gaskill, Lippincott, Shinn.\nNearly two hundred persons answered letters written by the compiler.\nMany were happy to spend time digging through the old records. Family,\nchurch, court, census and pension records were consulted, as well as\nmany family and county histories.\nA special note should be added about the calendar. Before the Gre-\ngorian calendar was adopted in 1752, in records, especially Quaker,\nthe tenth month was Dec ember and the year began March 25. Eleven days\nhad to be added to 1700-dates. For example, George Washington was born\nFeb. 11-1731 (old Style) or Feb. 22-1732 (New Style). In Quaker records\nthis would be 12m 11 1731/32. Some dates in this book may be incorrect\nbecause writers did not understand the calendar changes. Examples are:\nOld\nNew\n10m 1 1741\nDec. 1-1741\n11m 1 1741/42\nJan. 1-1742\n12m\n1\n1741/42\nFeb. 1-1742\nlm 24 1741/42\nMar. 24-1742\nlm 25 1741/42\nMar. 25-1742\n2m 1 1742\nApr. 1-1742\nThese examples do not take into consideration the eleven added days.\nRELATED PUBLICATIONS (mimeographed) by RMB\n1953 The Washington County (Pa.) They deserve our thanks.\nWe thank Dr George E McCracken for publishing the complete Nixon\nfamily tree in The American Genealogist for April 1970.\n6\nINTRODUCTION\nWhen a man becomes President of the United States of America,\nthere is interest in his ancestry:\n(1) to find out something about the background of the man;\n(2) to discover who his relatives are.\nPresident Nixon was born in California. His father was born in\nOhio; his mother in Indiana. His parents, two of his grandparents\nand two of his great-grandparents died in California. All of his\ngrandparents, all of his great-grandparents and 13 of his 16 great-\ngreat-grandparents lived at one time in Ohio. The sixteen were born in:\nPa. 6; Md. 4; N. J. 3; Del. 2; Ohio 1.\nThe places of death are:\nOhio 7; Iowa 3; Ind. 2, Pa. 2; Mo. 1; Md. 1.\nThere are a number of unusual facts concerning the Nixon ancestors:\n(a) they all lived in a narrow band from the region of Baltimore\nto that of Newark; several went from Mass. or Long Island to N. J.;\n(b) on the average they landed in the U. S. about 1695; there is no\nrecord of any landing after 1775;\n(c) two-thirds were Quaker, coming from both sides of the family;\n(d) many of the families are well-known and have published genealogies;\n(e) a conservative estimate is that over two million Americans are\n\"cousins\" of President Nixon, going out as far as 9th cousins;\n(f) except for the Trimmers all the lines go back to the British Isles,\nmainly England, with a few Scottish and Welsh families, and\nseveral families stopping in Ireland on the way to America;\n(g) on the maternal side there is considerable longevity, for the\nfirst four generations the average age is 80 (for the paternal\nit is 60); and then for the great-great-great-grandparente\non the maternal side the average is 77, at time of death.\n7\nRichard Milhous Nixon had eight great-grandparents, two of whom\ndied after he was born. The eight branches are:\nNIXON - the earliest record is in 1731 when James Nixon bought a farm\nin Brandywine Hundred, New Castle Co., Del. He may have come from Ire-\nland. His descendants migrated to Washington Co., Pa., Ohio and Cal.\nMiss Ferguson and Dr. Lane assisted the compiler in this branch.\nTRIMMER - John Trimmer, of German origin, is listed in Hunterdon Co.,\nN.J. in 1739. He probably migrated to New Jersey some years earlier.\nThis familyHived in Morris Co., N.J., Juniata Co., Pa. and Washington\nCo., Pa. where a Trimmer married a Nixon. The Genealogy by David Trim-\nmer was valuable. This has never been published.\nWADSWORTH - the name of Thomas Wadsworth appears in Harford Co., Md.\nin 1741 when he was married. His origin is not known. The family moved\nto Ohio where a Wadsworth married a Nixon. Miss Rebecca Wadsworth\nsupplied helpful family data, as did Robert Barnes and Florence Main.\nMOORE - James Moore migrated from Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, Ireland to\nLancaster Co., Penna. sometime before 1759.\nThe family were Quakers.\nJames' father, also James, was married in Ireland in 1714. The family\nlikely originated in England. The movement was west from Lancaster Co.\nto Centre Co. and Allegheny Co. in Pa. and then to Ohio, where a Moore\nmarried a Wadsworth. The chief source is The Ancestors and Descendants\nof Andrew Moore by J.A.M. Passmore, Phila. 1897. Others assisting were:\nMrs. Ruth M. Smith with the Lillian Rowell charts, Warren W. Nixon\nand Florence Main. This branch was the hardest to trace.\nMILHOUS - Thomas Milhous, born 1699, went from Timahoe, Co. Kildare,\nIreland to Chester Co., Pa. in 1730 (settling nine miles west of James\nNixon). His grandfather, also Thomas, was living in Carrickfergus, Co.\nAntrim in 1669, when John , father. of the younger Thomas, was born.\nThe family may have originated in England. From Chester Co. the Mil-\nhouses moved to Ohio, Ind. and Cal. Mrs. Martha Gibbons provided\n8\nhistories by William Milhous (b. 1839) and Mrs. Dorothy Z. Milhous.\nThe Milhous Bibles, at the Library of Congress, were used in the 1969\ninaug ration of the President.\nGRIFFITH - William Griffith went from Wales to New Castle Co., Del.\nabout 1700. His family moved to York Co., Pa. and then Washington Co.,\nPa. where a Griffith-Milhous marriage occurred. James Griffith 1808-\n1892, of York Co., Pa. wrote a history of the family. Mrs. Florence\nSterner supplied a copy from the original in the York Co. Histl. Socy.\nBURDG - the Burdg family is found at Great Neck, Long Island in the\n1670's. From here they went to Monmouth Co., N.J., Fayette Co., Pa.\nand Ohio, where a Milhous married a Burdg. The main source is Burdg\nand Allied Families by Howard G. Burdg, Conway, N.H. 1950.\nHEMINGWAY - the Hemingways appear in Roxbury, Mass. about 1634. They\nthen moved to Burlington Co., N.J. and then Ohio, where a Hemingway\nmarried a Burdg. The chief source is Ralph Hemmenway and His Descendants\nby C.A.H. Newton, Napierville, Ill. 1932-43.\nInto the above eight branches married eight more:\nWILSON - New Castle Co., Del.; Washington, Pa.\nHUNT - Washington Co., Pa. likely from N.J. This line has yet to be traced.\nLYTLE - Baltimore Co., Md. Data supplied by Robert Barnes.\nBROWN - Ireland; Frederick Co., Va.; Hampshire Co., W.Va.; Perry Co, Ohio.\nData supplied by Florence Main.\nVICKERS - Bucks Co. and Chester Co., Pa.\nPRICE - A.Arundel Co., Md. Data supplied by A. Russell Slagle.\nMATTHEWS - New Castle Co., Del.; Baltimore Co., Md.\nMALMSBURY - Burlington Co., N.J.; Columbiana (now Mahoning) Co, Ohio\nHelp received from John W.
