thank you more than I can Say for
your consoling letter about Vidals play. - or
a but my part in it. 2 was really sickened when
2 was toed about his use of that line, picked
up - and used in absolute opposistion to its
original meaning - - from I know not where
I appreciate it the more knowing that you
wrote me at a time when there really was
not time to write.
After I Sent the family picture to the
President I had a pictograph with identifying
names made I Enclose it with this letter.

It seems like forever since our visit coming back
from Ireland - do hope you will be coming through
Washington again one of these days so we can get
together.
The President is so delighted to have the picture
that was taken at your great grandfather's home
in 1887. Would it be possible for you to send him
the names of the people in the picture, with a left
to right identification, so we could prepare it for
the Nixon Library ? I am assuming that you have
a copy of the picture -- If not and you need to have
this one returned so you can send us as much in-
formation as possible, just let me know.

Dear Richard
You may have this picture, but perhaps not in
this restored and enlarged form. You probably recognize
every one in it. The picture was taken in 1887 at great
grandfather's home. I hope you got to see his house and
farm when you were in Indiana. He turned down the fertility
(and monotony) of Illinois and Iowa after a trip there for the
beauty of Southern Indiana. He was an artist at heart.
Your mother, grandmother and great grandmother
are in the picture. It's odd how little some of the people changed
over the years. "Little" Mattie and your grandmother, my
Aunt Allie, were not touched by time.
I'm just home from speaking to the yearly convention
of Indiana Librarians. The only time they interrupted my
speech with applause was when I said that at 17 it had been
my intention to go to China to teach girls to play basketball.
"I anticipated the President's Chinese policy by fifty years. "
Great applause -- for your policy, not my basketball, it was
apparent.

get turned around politically before the year is over.

been compiled on the Nixon and Milhous families by Dr.
Raymond M. Bell of Washington and Jefferson College.
Dr. Bell started sending us information
in 1953 and during the Vice Presidential years we did have
a mimeographed sheet that we sent out which took care of
the majority of inquiries.
I should have this file within the next
few days so we can pull some of this information together.
