This material will be incorporated in a new Third Edition, when I get around to it. You may get queries about the enclosed and maybe you can make them happy, by showing that they are sixth cousins. I may have to upgrade the two million estimate, for the latest check showed that half of Mr. Nixon's ancestors were here in 1685. The Milhous family was one of the last to come 1729. I enclose new data which may be of interest. Mr. Frank Nixon did not know where his father, Samuel B. was born. I think that I have located the approximate site - see maps. It was at what is now Atlasburg, a coal mining town. I used the 1850 census and an 1855 map. Since the Nixons were renters the location cannot be proved absolutely. I think there is a slag dump where the house stood. Sincerely yours, Raymond M.Bill COPY WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON COLLEGE WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA Department of Physics 31 October 1971 Dear Miss Woods, It was a high privilege to meet President and Mrs. Nixon 12 September. Sometime you might tell the President that I have found that he and President Herbert Hoover share an ancestor in Richard Sawtell of Massachusetts. This makes Presidents Nixon and Hoover distant cousins. A study of the homes of the Nixon early ancestors shows: (approx) 50% Phila delphia Region 30% Boston Region 10% New York Region 10% Baltimore Region Sincerely yours, Raymond M. Dear Mrs. Nixon - Please accept the enclosed packet of letters, clippings, and other Milhouse family memorabilia for your review in the hope they will bring a little pleasure to the President and that they may eventually find a welcome in the proposed presidential library.
