IlI-23. Franklin MILHOUS,
Many people have expressed thir high regard for Franklin Milbous for
his integrity and judgmont, his understanding and loving kindness. He was
friendly, hospitable and genuinely interested in other people. Ho was
much concerned about our National situation, the need for definite diplo-
macy. To was much disturbed about the first WORLD WAR and what it, was
going to moon to our country. Hc surrounded the activities of the Friends
Meeting ned was very entive on committees of the church, and was sought
out for advice on the building committee and finances. Ho, also, sang in
the choir.
His social life extended to his noighbors, friends and porticularly
his relatives. Friends or relatives who come to Celifornia from the cant
WOTD always invited and unsed to come to their house and stay n while and
many did for a wook, 2 month or longer. He onjoyed driving eesterners
avound through 00002 Boad Whattier Citrus Groves. After Sunday moeting he
VICAS usually the lant one to leave to be sure no strangers or visitors were
loft without an invitation to dinner. Their table was stretched out and
roady to volcome any and all who came.
When Almira Park Burdg Milhous was nearly eighty-eight she went by
antomobile with her daughter and son-in-law, Hannah and Frank Nixon, to
attend the graduation exercises at Duko University in North Carolina, of
their son, Richard, She Was always possessed with enthusiasm and zest for
houself and for all mankind. She loved to work in the yard, tending her
plants 01' caring for her chickens. She liked all of the farm animals and
was conscially fond of horses, as had her father, Oliver Burdg, been before
her. She know much about the trees and fruits and flowers and all expres-
sions of nature seemed to speak of One she had long ago learned to love.
Sh. wrote proy pieces of poetry, often writing to friends and relatives on
special days or occasions for them.
At the fifticth anniversary of the founding of Whittier, California,
she acted an important part in the pageant, dressed in traditional Quaker
costume. She lit the first of the fifty white candles while h spelled the
name "Whittier" at the opening of the colobration and held a prominent
place throughout the wook's activities.
A verso of hers, expressive of her sentiments follows:
When they crossed to the other side
Uhere joy and pence and love abide,
We should not murrur nor complain
For wish them back to earth again
25
To suffer on, perhaps for years,
Mid care and toil and sometimes tears,
But strive to meet them in a better land
Where naught can sever the family bond.
Almira Park Burdg Milhous was active in church, W.C.T.U., V. C.
Auxiliary, East Whittier Women's Improvement Club -- and acted as Secretary
of that organization,
