Dear Mr. Moore:
This is a belated note to tell you how very
much I approciated your thoughtful letter
of November 2. enclosing the birth record
of my father's half-brether, Hugh Heary
Nimen. We often receive inquiries regard-
ing the Ninen generlogy and the record
which you sent me will be a helpful addition
to our aneestry files. I was pleased to note,
incidentally, that your father, Dr. William
Moore, attended the birth of my Uncle Hugh,
and I have no doubt that he was also present
at the birth of many of my Nixes cousins in
the Vinten County area.
With my thanks and very best wishes,
Sincerely,
KICHARD NIXON

Nixon Has
Wide Ohio
Ancestry
LOGAN, Ohio (2) A stur-
tribe of Nixons in Hock-
ing. i, too and Pacty com-
ties will testify to the Ohio
heritage of Republican presi-
dential candidate Richard M.
Vixon.
The former vice president's
family roots 20 deen into
Southeastern Ohio hill coun-
try.
HIS GREAT-GREAT-grand-
father, George Nixon, was 60
years old when he migrated
from Virginia to Vinton Coun-
BY in 1641 One of his sons,
George III. followed him to
Ohio in 1857. became a Union
soldier in the Civil War and
was killed at Gettysburg in
1863, leaving a family of
eight children.
One of those children was
Samuel Brady Nixon who was
14 when his father was killed.
At 26, he married the daugh-
ter of a neighboring store-
keeper, Sarah Wadsworth,
and they became the parents
of Richard Nixon's father,
Frank, and four other chil-
dren.
SAMUEL NIXON remar-
ried after Sarah died in 1686
and with his new wife, moved
to Mount Pleasant on the
Hocking Vinton county line.
It was there that Richard
Nixon's father grew up. In
those years. the Nixons were
all industrious hill farmers
and Democrats, as were most
of their neighbors.
Frank Nixon broke with
family tradition and became a
Republican during the Mc.
Kinley presidential campaign.
FRANK NIXON was 23
when he moved to Columbus
in 1901. He worked there six
years as a streetcar operator,
then moved in 1007 to Whit-
lier. Calif.
He reared his family as
Quakers and Republicans and
lived to see his son become
the U.S. vice president. He
died in 1936.
The Nixon clan has multi-
plied mightily in this area
with (our of five branches in
Hocking County alone,
IN 1960. BICHARD Vixon
made two cambiega trips by
train through his father's na.
tive hills.

Dear Dr. Bell:
While I am not quite sure just now in which direction
the new pastures will lie, my association with the
President's mail will presumably finish at the end
of this month. The number of people writing to claim
relationship with the President has of course dropped
considerably since the lively months following his
Inauguration, but I know that Mrs. Humes will prove a
faithful gatherer of the odd genealogical fact.
It has been a great pleasure for me to correspond with
you during these last two and one-half years. Perhaps
some day I will have the opportunity to meet you, and
in the meantime 1 will be waiting for the news that you
have succeeded in Identifying Nixon aneestor number
10,000.
Sincerely,
Noble M. Melencamp

ANCESTRAL LINES OF RICHARD MILHOUS NIXON
by
Raymond M. Bell, Frank R. Baird and Stuart P. Lloyd
This is the record as of 15 November 1971. The name listed is the
earliest record of a male in America with the state and the date the
name appears. The number in ( ) is the number on the Nixon family
tree. (See the April issues of The American Genealogist for 1970,
1971 and 1972.) Under the name is the British or Irish place of
origin, if known. If there was early migration in America by the man
listed or his descendants, the second location with date is shown in
( ). There are more lines in Pennsylvania than any other state.
Massachusetts is second. There are very few after 1750.
