RECEIVED
Mr. Herb Klein
MAY 1 1969
White House
Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. Klein:
When I spoke to Tina this evening she told me you would like more
information regarding the TV special I spoke to her about last week.
The working title, "PRESIDENTS'DAUGHTERS", when completed
would air as an hour network special, done more or less in a doc-
umentary fashion. It is conceivable that it might run 90 minutes.
It will be filmed in color on location (where ever the person is) by
top flight cameramen aided by an award winning director, Julian
Krainin.
We hope to have all the living daughters of American presidents
participating in the special. We propose to use only film clips of
Carolyn Kennedy, as we feel she was too young to register the kind
of reactions we are interested in filming. Also we do not wish to
rekindle any sad memories. With that exception, there are seven
daughters.
We feel this program will not only have historical value, but will
also afford interesting and amusing insights not previously explored
for the viewing audience.
At present our budget covers a $500 honorarium to the participants.
The idea belongs to Bill Richert, a writer at Westinghouse. Hal Golden,
who was President of ABC Films when I worked there recommended me
to co-ordinate the people. My title would be that of co-producer on
the credits.
I have spoken to Julie and she is willing to participate in it. Also,
I wrote her a letter outlining all the details which she told me she
forwarded to Mr. John Erlichman with the understanding he would
pass it along to you. This was over two weeks ago.
Julie finishes her exams May 22, and said we could come to
Northhampton to film her any time after that date. Time is of
the essence since she will be taking summer courses in Georgetown
and living in the White House. We would like to film her in Northhampton.
-2-
I spoke to Tricia briefly about the show the night of Mrs. Nixon's birthday
dinner. She had no objections at that time, and supposed that we would
like to film her in the White House which is correct. Assuming, of course,
that it is permissible.
We are currently budgeted for $120, 000., although it may go higher if
necessary to maintain quality.
Margaret Truman has confirmed in writing that she will appear in the
special, and requested to do some of the narration which we were delighted
to agree to.
We would like some written confirmation that Julie and Tricia can appear
because we are ready to start scheduling and the company that is financing
us must have the assurance that the participants are firm.
Tina mentioned that you particularly wanted additional information
about National Student Marketing Corporation. The information I
have is as follovs: :
National Student Marketing Corporation is a manufacturing,
distributing, and service organization focused on reaching
the student market or the under 30 age group. Located in
the Time-Life building, they have been in existence about
five years and employ over 500 people. The corporation is
public, over-the-counter, selling between $42 and $45 and
its president is Mr. Cortes W. Randall. They are unique
in their field. Starting from 3 1/2 million in 1967, their
projected earnings for 1970 are 60 million. Basically they
provide programs and services to companies wanting to reach
the youth market. It is estimated that NASMC reaches 95%
of the 7 million college students in the U.S. American
Airlines and Chrysler are among their clients.
The company is now expanding in the area of general
television programing and feature films. "PRESIDENTS"
DAUGHTERS", will be their first major effort.
I hope the above information is sufficient to give you some idea
of their operation.
It was nice to see you at the March 16th dinner and I hope you
are enjoying Washington and the responsibilities which must be very
rewarding. I must say that I do miss all the excitement of the campaign.
Please let me know your reaction to Julie and Tricia's participation
in this TV special and we are anxious to start filming.
Thank you.

Will you please check out this television special to be called
"The President's Daughters" to determine whether it is a
thing that we want Tri cia or Julie to get into?
I don't know what the timing is on this but you might call the
writer of the attached letter, Ann Duggan, who worked during
the campaign in New York and is now located there.
Also, find out what you can about the Tricia doll and let me know
what you think.

Julie
Re the TV special, it is called "PRESIDENTS' DAUGHTERS".
It will be a one hour color network program. We are in the
process of scheduling filming at each individual's convenience.
Hopefully, you after May 23rd.
Could you find out when filming of Tricia would be convenient.
Naturally, we would like to film her in the White House. We
discussed this briefly at the dinner.
After our conversation, I spoke to Margaret Truman and she
is definitely committed. She was even nice enough to give me
Anna Roosevelt's address.
and you will be happy to know that she
is now the wife of Dr. James Halsted, and lives in Washington.
Not infrequently I get some strange requests. A man that did
some work in the campaign contacted me concerning a friend
of his who is a large manufacturer of dolls who would like to
make a doll of Tricia (for stores).
-2-
They wanted to know if I would get good, preferably color shots
of Tricia, and also to find out if she had any objections to having
a doll of her likeness made.
Coming to me about this might seem strange to you, however,
many people do not know the proper channels to go through or
who handles what in Washington. Sometimes I feel like I'm
the New York extention of the Information Bureau. I try to keep
track (through the newspapers) of who is doing what in Washington
and refer matters to the proper handlers.
However, this is a delicate matter because an offer of money
is envolved. Whereas I don't want any and won't take any, --
the same offer might be very acceptable to someone else.
They wanted Tricia to get 1/4 of the proceeds, either for herself,
or for her favorite charity. As best I could find out, that could
be anywhere upwards of $20,000.
They offered me 1/8 of the profits which I positively let them
know I could not share. Realistically, I am aware that this sort
of thing goes on all the time
wheeling and dealing.
and although
it is personally distasteful to me, I know that basically that is how
most Public Relations Firms make their money. And I suppose
if I were in that business, I'd get used to it. But since I'm not
I don't have to face that bridge. Lately, I have seen too much of
this sort of thing, people using your (Nixon) name, or claiming
close friendship, and capitalizing on it. People that should know
better and that should have more conscience. It appalls me, and
probably always will. It's funny to me that since your father is
President, I've run into so many self-styled "close, dear friends",
that the White House wouldn't be big enough to hold them all.
My concern is this! Any manufacturer can go ahead and make
a doll of Tricia without permission, and flood the market with
it. Tricia might not like the resemblance and be embarressed by
it. Presumably, she could get a legal injunction to stop the
manufacturer of it. But all that is messy business.
My suggestion to them was that IF I got them the proper
photographs, they make a sample doll and submit it to Tricia
for approval. Then if she didn't like it --that would be the
end of it. And if she did, well, then they could mass reproduce.
Of course, I admit to stalling them until I get some knowledge of
Tricia's feelings on the matter. But I realize they can get some
color photographs from almost any large magazine like Life or
Look, etc. that were printed during and since the campaign.
All they need these for is to determine skin tone and coloring.
-3-
Understand that I don't think there is anything wrong with their
wanting to make a beautiful doll of Tricia, it would probably be
beautiful. If they hadn't mentioned money, I would probably have
written you and asked the same questions, gotten the pictures
they requested, and told them to submit the doll to Tricia for
approval or rejection. But bringing in the money part make
it seem immoral, or sort of Judas like selling your friends or
something. I really can't explain it very well, but I'm sure you
know what I mean. I feel I'm over-explaining and perhaps
confusing.
Anyway, HELP!! What should I do? Should they get pictures
or not? Would Tricia object to a doll or not? Actually, that's
all they want to find out from me.. which certainly isn't worth
any renumeration.
After saying I didn't want to bother you with mail, look at this
long letter. Sorry, but I forgot about the doll thing until after
we finished speaking.
All good wishes to David and to you.

Dear Ken:
Attached is the brief note which I requested of Prof. wills.
I've satisfied myself that he has the complete support of
Dr. Henry King Stanford, the President of the University of
Miami. Dr. Stanford approached a mutual friend, Sloan McCrea,
to encourage me.
Their plan is to sell stock in Mnemosyne Publishing Co., Inc.
to individuals who will in turn contribute the stock to the
University. They would hope to be able to put the President
on a payroll of possibly $100, 000 a year after he leaves office.
He would only be required to give four or five lectures each
year.
They further agree to keep the papers under the complete control
of the University and not to release or disclose any of them
except upon specific instructions from the President.
Prof. wills is willing and anxious to go to Washington and
discuss this in more detail should it be advisable.

Dear Mr. Rebozo:
This letter is to confirm our telephone conversation
about Mnemosyne Publishing Company's interest in purchasing
the pre-presidential papers of R. M. Nixon for a sum, to be
negotiated, in excess of $500,000. As I indicated, Mnemosyne
Publishing has verbal commitments to amounts in excess of the
purchase price, but we may need 20-25 days to acquire the
money and to establish an escrow account for the transfering
of moneys.
Our contractual negotiations would be subject to Mnemosyne's
being able to acquire sufficient capital to make the cash
transaction and to provide the necessary safeguards for the
papers.
The University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida will
function as the repository for the pre-presidential papers,
and it will be the recipient of all royalties from any books
or materials that may result from the publication of the
papers.
I am looking forward to our being able to negotiate a
mutually beneficial contract.
Sincerely,
Frank E. Wills

Dear Mr. Krehbiel:
Mr. Richard Ritzel, of the law firm of Mudge, Rose, Guthrie
and Alexander in New York, and I have reviewed your pro-
posed insurance program at great length and find that we have
a number of questions which I am certain you can answer.
However, since these questions involve more than simple factual
answers and go into the whole philosophy of our estate planning
and real estate management, we are wondering if you would be
available to meet with us in New York on April 19.
I would like to set up a meeting between you, Mr. Ritzel and Mr.
Feinstein, who presently handles the President's accounting, and
me. It would generally be an all-afternoon work session in this
area. We would mect at the law firm, 20 Broad Street, New
York, perhaps beginning at noon with lunch.
I would very much appreciate your advising me at your earliest
possible convenience whether you could attend such a meeting.

Dear Mr. Feinstein:
Mr. Richard Ritzel, of the law firm of Mudge, Rose, Guthrie and
Alexander in New York, and I have discussed a proposed insurance
program for the President, together with your Statement of Net
Worth.
We would like to discuss our estate planning and real estate manage-
ment, and we are wondering if you would be available to meet with us
and Mr. John V. Krehbiel, who presently handles the President's
insurance, on April 19.
We have selected that date since you will have then filed the 1968 tax
return and will be able to bring with you an up to date Net Worth
Statement. The meeting would generally be an all-afternoon work
session and would be held at the law firm, 20 Broad Street, New York,
probably beginning at noon with lunch.
I would appreciate your advising me at your earliest possible conven-
ience whether you could attend such a meeting.
In the meantime, I am also unable to ascertain from your figures the
exact purchase price of the undeveloped land in Florida. Did Tricia
Nixon pay $20,000 out of a total cost of $37,000, or $20,000 of a
$59,000 cost?

learned the wrong that he had done in persecuting Chris-

for righteousness' sake belongs to the past,

The trials encountered by prophet, disciple, and apostle,

There is too much animal courage in society and not
