MEMORANDUM
TO:
Bob Haldeman
FROM:
Murray Chotiner
We are getting letters from spirtual leaders of the various
faiths, offering to give prayers at the Inauguration.
We cannot reply by saying this is in the hands of those in
charge of planning the Inauguration (Senator Dirksen et al).
Senator Dirksen's office advises that the four spiritual
leaders who give the prayers and the person who sings the
Star Spangled Banner is designated by the President-Elect.
If we refer these letters to Senator Dirksen, he will refer
them right back, according to his staff.
Please let me know whether we can reply to these various
requests by saying that the individuals have already been
selected and thank them for their offer, etc. etc.
For your information the four denominations in alphabetical
order, are: Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Jewish, and Protestant.
The Very Reverend Francis B. Sayre, Jr., has offered his
cathedral in Washington for a commemorative service as a
feature of the Inauguration and is available to work with
anyone of RN's choosing to prepare it.
Attached are examples of the request we have been receiving;
if you want me to reply, please return them to me.
This isn't exactly the most pressing item on your agenda,
but it will help us if you make it so.

Dear Mr. Nixon:
On January 20th you will be inaugurated as President of the

May we remind you that Dr. J. H. Jackson, President of the
National Baptist Convention U.S.A. Inc., with a membership of

opposed "Civil Disobedience" and supported "Law and Order" from
the date of passage of the Civil Rights Bill, while others were
promoting "Civil Disobedience".

THE ELECTION IS OVER
and the results indicated a conservative up-trend demanding "Law and Order and a return
to Constitutional Government".
POSITION OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES
The following is from "Christian Century" an unofficial publication of N.C.C.,
Oct. 30, 1968:
"Four years (and perhaps eight) is too long to turn the Nation over to
one who does not inspire trust in the area of foreign policy, who
temporizes with racism and uses the issue of "law and order" as a
basis of repression, who evidences no bold or imaginative programs for
dealing with the economically deprived sectors of the nation, and who
by his selection of a running mate has shown a monumental disregard
for the awesome responsibilities of the presidential office."
The N.C.C. prepared for a possible Nixon election and state in the same editorial
that Mr. J. Irwin Miller, former president of the National Council of Churches, "is one of
the most celebrated foreign policy advisers in the Nixon Campaign - - and in the event of a
Nixon election, could prove to be a vital communications link between liberal church leaders
and the White House".
"IT CAN HAPPEN HERE."
The above is the heading of an article in the October 19, 1968 issue of "Information
Service" an official publication of the National Council of Churches. The church leadership
is not afraid of Communists but rather the fear is of fascists. The following statement appears
in the article:
"The American Communist Party is at an all time ebb, scorned by the
'new left' and the students, virtually bankrupt, splintered and ineffectual.
Perhaps the National Council of Churches were just trying to help another down-
trodden minority group when they sent out Gus Hall's interview stating that the objectives
of the Communist Party and the liberal Church are so similar that they should be working
together. In their sorrow will they continue to support this ailing brother known as World
Communism, after all they have only worked together for the past 50 years?
THE EUGENE BRADLEY CASE.
Governor Reagan, on Nov. 8, 1968, notified James Garrison that he would not sign
extradition papers on Eugene Bradley since Mr. Garrison gave no proof that Mr. Bradley was
in Dallas in 1963. Jim Garrison, the New Orleans District Attorney who requested the extra-
dition, is now himself involved in a Federal investigation for possible links with organized
crime and the investigation is being done by a Federal Grand Jury. It has been our opinion
from the beginning that this has been a political harrassment of Dr. Carl McIntire by whom
Mr. Bradley is employed. It also was a case which would be time consuming and expensive.
BISHOP JAMES A.PIKE.
Time Magazine of October 18 reported that Bishop Pike officiated at a Communion
Service at St. Aidans Episcopal Church, San Francisco, celebrating the 150th Anniversary
of the birth of Karl Marx. (The father of Communism)
SOUTHERN BAPTIST DENOUNCE N.C.C. LEADERSHIP
Dr. W. A. Criswell of Dallas, Texas, President of this largest Protestant denomination
says: "Joining the National Council of Churches is out of the question since Southern Baptists
reject the liberal far left leanings of its leadership." Herald-Examiner 10/12/68

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT, Sept. 23, 1968
A "PAUL REVERE" MESSAGE - SEND TO A FRIEND - SPREAD THE ALARM - DON'T DISCARD
THE SECOND LARGEST DENOMINATION AFFILIATED WITH
The National Council of Churches of Christ
Is The National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc.
This denomination is presided over by Dr. J. H. Jackson, who for 15 years
has been president of 6.5 million Negro Baptists. Dr. Jackson is a Bible preaching
patriot who loves both God and Country.
We call your attention to an objective report by the U.S. News & World Report
on the annual convention of this denomination held in Atlanta, Georgia, Sept. 5,
1968. (See reverse side.) This report is fair and objective. Now compare this with
the slanted smear report on the same convention put out by;
Newsweek, September 16, 1968
This report appears on page 88 and is headed "Law and The Old Order".
"With its 6.5 million members, the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A.
Inc. is the largest and wealthiest Negro organization in the world. It
is also the most bourgeois. There were no African-style hair-dos or
brightly colored Afro-American dashikis in sight in Atlanta, Ga., where
the National Baptist held their annual convention; only women wearing
pill box hats and men looking their middle-class best in dark suits."
"From his $99-a-day suite on the seventeenth floor of Regency Hyatt
House hotel, the convention's president, Dr. Joseph Harrison Jackson,
looked out over the hometown of the late Martin Luther King etc., etc."
Newsweek gets over its message that this 6,500,000 denomination are not good
prospects for the revolutionary N.C.C. white leadership, even to using the Russian
Communist word "bourgeois" to describe them. In the article they go on to point
out that Martin Luther King and other civil-rightists tried to unseat Dr. Jackson in
1960 while Dr. Jackson a few months later had Martin Luther King removed from
office as Vice President in charge of the Youth Division.
The Communist Party U.S.A., dating back to the year 1954, called for the
support of Martin Luther King. Dr. Jackson was aware of Dr. King's communist
backing before he dismissed him as Vice President of the Youth Division. That
did not deter the white leadership of the National Council of Churches at their
General Board meeting of June 9-10, 1961 from throwing their support behind Martin
Luther King by a vote of 55-44. After all he already had the support of the
Communists and the Church leaders did want a revolutionary activist, since objectives
were about the same. (See Publ. 171 if you doubt it.)
The Religious News Service in a report date-lined Cleveland, Ohio, September
9, 1963 quoted Dr. Jackson in his presidential address at the denominations annual
convention, which took place just a few days after the Reuther-N
Coalition's March on Washington of August 28, 1963 as follows;
"Dr. Jackson called on his followers not to rally behind any group
of leaders, black or white, who seek to lead US into rebellion
against our Nation and the just laws of the land.
If the white N.C.C. leadership had supported a similar philosophy instead of
the philosophy of the Communist Party, today's problems for the most part could be
much easier solved. Dr. Jackson's address is 3101 South Parkway, Chicago, Illinois
60616. Why not let Dr. Jackson know that he has your support. Walter Reuther
lists Dr. Jackson in his Group Research Report of July 31, 1968 as a "right-winger."

Dear John:
Dr. Joseph H. Jackson, President of the
National Baptist Convention, who endorsed Mr. Nixon
two weeks or so before the election, has expressed
interest in:
1) Saying a prayer at the Inauguration, and
2) Being named Chairman of a National
Commission on Unity.
I told him I would pass along his requests,
and I presume you will see that they get to the right
people.
We have also received a request that Rabbi
Morris M. Hershman of Joliet, Illinois, be invited to
represent the Jewish faith at the Inauguration.
Best wishes.
Sincerely,

Dear John:
Re: Prayers at the Inauguration
Although I did suggest that the four long prayers in
the LBJ inaugural were too much, I think it would be a mis-
take to reduce the number of clergymen to two.
The country has been SO accustomed to the concept of
"Protestant, Catholic and Jew," that to omit any one of the
three on this particular occasion might be misinterpreted.
If you get an ironclad promise from the three clergy-
men to stay under a minute each, you will really have no
timing problem. But even if you do, I really think that is
a trivial matter compared to the possible flak about omit-
ting a Catholic or a Jew, particularly in view of the "to-
gether" theme.
Incidentally, that was a tremendous success Wednesday
night. In case you missed it, I thought you would enjoy
the enclosed comment from the Wall Street Journal about
the recognition given to Mayor Washington. I think this
played well everywhere.
Sincerely,
Doel

This will acknowledge receipt of your letter of November

Dirksen appreciates very much having the information you
submitted in regard to Mae. Eve Bauman of Sunnyvale,
California.
The selection of one or two soloists used in the Inaugural
program at the Capitol is left to the Fresident-Elect.
The President-Elect submits his selection to the Inaugural
Committee; the Committee has always followed the recommendations
of the President-Elect. Therefore, I am referring your letter,

Dear Senator Dirksen:
Since you are co-chairman for the Inaugural Program, may I suggest
a singer whom I feel would make an outstanding contribution to the
ceremony? She is Mme. Eve Bauman, 633 Ashbourne Drive, Sunnyvale,
California 94087, telephone (408) 245-7359.
While recently in California, I was guest at a dinner where Mme.
Bauman was singing and was so impressed that I went up to talk to
her. Her picture was on the wall along with both President-elect
Nixon and General Eisenhower, all taken with Mario, then Maitre-D.
at the Sheraton-Palace in San Francisco. She began campaigning
for Nixon two years ago enthusiastically and mentioned the close
of his acceptance speech bringing out the achievement of a small
town boy. She felt that it would be a glorious achievement for her
as a naturalized citizen to use her talents for him. As a matter
of fact, she was chosen to sing "The Star Spangled Banner" at the
reopening of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, at the begin-
ning of the Golden Gate Park concerts and on "United Nationalities Day."
She was a citizen of Naperville, Illinois until her husband's work
for the space program at Lockheed took her to California. Now that
her four sons are growing up, she is once again resuming her musical
career.
I was so intrigued by this idea that we managed to tape a snatch
of her singing thatnight and am sendingift to you so that you might
get an idea of her singing.
With the best of wishes, I am

hard.
We also want to express our appreciation to the Richards family: Dick,

deserves special thanks. Performers have included Miss Vita Bufalo,
Miss Glory Seage, Mr. George Moran, Mr. Philip Francisco, Mr. Marco

Dear Charlie:
This will acknowledge and thank you for your letter

It has been a long-established practice by the Joint

actual swearing-in ceremonies held on Capitol Hill.
Inasmuch as we will not know until possibly November
6, 1968, who the President-elect will be, there is nothing we

Dear Everett:
Enclosed is a copy of a letter I have just received from
Rev. Elwood Coggin of Charlotte along with lyrics from a cantata
he has composed. Rev. Coggin would like to know of the possi-
bilities of his cantata being used as a part of the inaugural
program in January.
I am sending this to you because you served as Chairman
of the Inaugural Committee in 1965 and hope you will forward
Rev. Coggin's lyrics to the people who make decisions on matters
such as this.
With kindest regards and best wishes, I am

Dear Mr. Jonas:
You will find with this letter a copy of
the text to a short cantata which I wrote for the celebration
of the Two Hundredth Anniversary of Charlotte. It was pre-
sented five times, as you will see on the program.
Do you know of a possibility of this being
used as a part of the Convention or the program for Inaugura-
tion Day next January? Any suggestions you have will be
appreciated.
Thank you for your fine work!
Sincerely,
Elwood Elwood Cogen Coggin

With Selections from The Psalms
I. Liberty! Freedoms Justice: Truth!
We are indebted to those who have preceeded us in the struggle for Liberty:
Freedoms Justice! Truth!
For these men in every generation have fought and died. Their sacrifice has
brought us to this day.
"The Word of the Lord is right; and all His works are done faithfully.
He loves righteousness and justice." (Psalm 33:4-5a)
II. In the darkness of man's being there is greed, prejudice, hatred.
"God rules by His power forever; His eyes behold the nations; let not
the rebellious exalt themselves." (Pealm 66.7)
In man there is greed, prejudice, hatred.
"Let God arise and scatter His enemies; let them that hate Him flee
before Him." (Psalm 68.1)
III.
"God looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there
are any who understand and seek after Him." (Psalm 53.2)
Man with his Creator can be a force for kindness, mercy, love.
IV. Let us overcome the littleness which enslaves men's souls and limits minds.
Let us seek the truth, strive for justice, and fight for freedom for all men.
V.
"Teach us Thy way, 0 Lord, that we may walk and live in Thy truth.
Direct and unite our hearts to fear and honor Thy name that the
generations to be born may arise and set their hope in Thee, and
keep Thy commendments." (Psalm 86:11-12; 78:6-7)
Let us seek the wisdom to see beyond our narrow way to that new day when
men shall live as brothers.
Let us live these truths which we profess: Liberty! Freedoms Justice!
Truth!
VI. Let us go on with courage and the assurance that the God who made us and
brought us to this day will lead us on to Liberty! Freedoms Justice:
Truth!
Let us 80 on!

Dear Mr. Crusade:
Your letter to the Honorable Strom Thurmond has been
received by this office.
Although your offer to present Mr. Nixon with a citation
is appreciated, it will be impossible during the inaugural weekend.
The President's time during that weekend is already so filled it is
impossible to add any events to his schedule.
We are deeply honored to be considered for your citation,
and hope that you can appreciate our inability to accept it on that
busy, busy weekend.
Thanking you again for your interest, I am

Dear Mr. Ehrlichman:
Some of us here in California are still somewhat mesmerized in happy
orbit after watching Mr. Nixon reach the highest star. However, now
that we have had a little sleep, I know we must now land and start
preparing for the future.
It has occurred to me that possibly my song, Good Things, might be of
some use in the future for some of the festivities and balls following
the inauguration ceremonies. And, after watching the charm, good sense
and most of all loyalty of the lovely Nixon girls on the TV Telethon, the
thought occurred to me that possibly the song might be something that
could be used by them as a sort of back-up to the program Mr. Nixon pre-
sented that night. Perhaps if it could be sung by them, with a group of
girls backing them up, it might be of some benefit to Mr. Nixon during the
next trying, few months.
If you wish any information about me, personnally, Mr.Paul Weirick, V.P.
and Gen. Mgr. of the Lawrence Welk Orgs., as well as Mr. Sonny Burke and
Mr. Jimmy Hilliard, supervisor of Warner Bros. Records will give it to you.
I hope you like the song, Mr. Ehrlichman, and that it proveshelpful in
some way. There is no need to return the leadsheets in any event. Thank
you.
Eleasth Sincerely, Elizabeth de Ly Lys
