Dear Mr. Goldstein:
President-elect Nixon has asked me to thank you for your sug-
gestion that Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin preside at the inauguration.
The inaugural planners have received suggestions that Rabbi
Magnin participate from a number of people other than your-
self. He is evidently an outstanding representative of the
Jewish faith.
Unfortunately, his abilities notwithstanding, a change in format
has made it impossible for the inaugural planners to include
Rabbi Magnin in the ceremonies.
President-elect Nixon thanks you again for your suggestion,
and wishes you joy during your holiday season.

Dear Mr. President-elect:
As you know, at recent inaugurations of Presidents, it has become
customary to have a Catholic priest, a Protestant minister, and a rabbi
participate in the inaugural ceremonies.
I am taking the liberty of suggesting that you use Rabbi Edgar F. Magnin
as the Jewish rabbi for the following reasons:
1.
Although he has been a rabbi for many years, he has never par-
taken in any political campaign except in one instance, and that was in
the year 1960 when I and a few of my friends prevailed upon him to de-
liver the invocation at the large breakfast meeting that I "chaired" at
the Coconut Grove when you were the principal speaker. This was, as
I have stated above, the only exception that Rabbi Magnin ever made. I
felt elated that he was willing to do so, and that he was most cooperative
in this respect.
2.
You happen to be the first native-born Westerner to be elected a
President of the United States.
3.
Rabbi Magnin is a native-born Californian, and is a member of the
well-known Magnin department store family. The Magnin family are
fourth-generation Californians, the family having first come around the
"Horn" in the early 1850's.
4.
Rabbi Magnin today is unquestionably the leading and most influen-
tial rabbi in the United States. His temple, Wilshire Boulevard Temple,
is probably the largest Jewish congregation in this country; further, he,
through his radio programs over a period of many years, and through his
daily writings in the Hearst papers, has gained a tremendous following.
As you are aware, the Hearst papers publish almost daily small columns
somewhat as a trilogy: one by Rabbi Magnin, one by your very good friend,
Billy Graham, who is also a friend of Rabbi Magnin's, and one by Bishop
Sheen.
President-elect Richard M. Nixon
810 Fifth Avenue
New York, New York
5.
I think Rabbi Magnin has been the best medium for promoting good-
will among people of all religious sects, and brotherhood among all
peoples.
I believe using Rabbi Magnin at the inauguration services would be a
credit not only to him, but to California, and to you especially. I hope
you will pardon me for taking this liberty, but I feel I would be remiss
in not calling these facts to your attention, since they are all in your best
interest.
With my kindest personal regards,
Cordially yours,
Gustave L. Goldstein

Dear Mr. Hadderman:
On Inauguration Day, thousands, even millions of First Day Covers
will have a U.S.A. commemorative or air mail stamp cancelled to
honor this historic event.
"Philately for Industry" specializes in creating distinguished
philatelic items for such events.
It has occurred to us that perhaps President Nixon might wish to
send a handsome souvenir folder to the many friends, who would
treasure such a gift, in honor of his inauguration.
A suggestion of what we have in mind, is in quality like the
enclosed Renoir Souvenir Folder. I shall have to ask you to
return this -- a true collectors item.
While writing to you, to have this idea presented to the person
who is to become involved with Philatelic Bureau of the U.S. Post
Office. (This needs a complete new look). There are 33 million
stamp collectors in the U.S.A. alone. Then too, comes the fantastic
potential application of U.S. stamps as propaganda and Public
Relations world-wide.
Secondly, both the American Museum of Natural History and the
Metropolitan Museum of Art will have in 1969 their 100th Anniversaries.
These renown institutions, certainly should have stamps to commemorate
their centennials. Who will be in charge of these decisions?

Dear President Nixon:
Congratulations upon your election to the Presidency of The United

strength sufficient for these days.
I, too, am impressed with the words you saw on the little girl's sign.
God knows that there is much to be done in terms of bringing us together.
It occurred to me that you may wish to symbolically register your inten-
tion in this regard during the inauguration. One significant way this
can be done is by inviting a Black clergyman to offer one of the prayers.
You can imagine how eloquently this will wed your words to a history-
making deed.
As one who offered one of the prayers when Vice President Elect Agnew
was elected governor, I am pleased to offer my services. The enclosed
biographical sketch should serve to recommend me for consideration.
Blessings upon you as you wrestle with decisions concerning appointments,
and the gigantic task of moving a united America forward.

Your correspondence with Mr. Bryce H. Narlow has been
passed along to this office.
Your request regarding the Washington High School Band
is directed to the wrong office. The governor of each state makes
the determination regarding the marching units in the inaugural pa-
rade. This is not a Nixon staff function.

Dear Mr. Pegler:
I apologize for the delay in this response; it is
not indicative of a lack in interest for the sug-
gestion made in your December 4 letter.
I have brought The Washington High School Band to
the attention of those working most closely with
Mr. Nixon in planning the Inaugural Festivities;
I am sure they will be in touch with you regarding
the possibilities of your participation.
Thanks very much for indicating your interest.

Dear Mr. Harlow:
I am writing you regarding our interest as the band to repre-
sent the State of Indiana in the 1969 Inaugural Parade. If
you recall we were the band selected to play at the Salute to
Lincoln Rally on February 13 of this year at Washington, Ind-
iana, which was one of Mr. Nixon's important milestones in his
bid for the presidency. We made Mr. Nixon an honorary member
of the "Marching Hatchets" of Washington, Indiana, after that
rally, and Mr. Nixon gave the band a large elephant cake to
express his thanks to us for a job well done.
We feel that if we were good enough to be selected to play
for the kick off of the Presidential campaign in Indiana,
we should be qualified to be in at the climax, the 1969
Inaugural Parade.
We really want to participate in this parade and members of
the band worked very hard in Mr. Nixon's behalf.
We have been in correspondence with Agnes Waldron, research
assistant for the Nixon-Agnew Campaign Committee, and have
sent her a complete brochure of pictures of the band.
If you like, we will be happy to send additional pictures
to you; however, those who heard the band at the Lincoln
Rally know that this band is well qualified to represent
Indiana in the 1969 Inaugural Parade.
Our band has received a Superior rating in every competition
in which we have participated since 1935.
We hope this information will reach President-elect Nixon
for we feel he has a special interest in this band.
Musically yours,

Dear Mr. Peterson:
This will acknowledge the receipt of and thank you for
material describing the qualifications of Rabbi Morris
M. Hershman of Joliet.
We have received recommendations for Rabbi Hershman from
a number of people in Joliet. He is evidently an outstand-

Although his qualifications were never in question, it was
impossible for the inaugural planners to include Rabbi
Hershman in the ceremonies.
Again, Mr. Peterson, we thank you for your support of

Dear Mr. Nixon:
We are writing regarding Jimmie McDonald, tenor soloist
for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Jimmie
remembers with warm pleasure being introduced to you
for the first time by Billy Graham at your hotel room
in Portland, Oregon, and the pleasant exchange of views
with you on the current racial tension in the nation.
Enclosed, please find the information you graciously
requested on that occasion.
We respectfully suggest, for your consideration, Jimmie
McDonald as soloist for the Inauguration Ceremony. He
is one of the most beloved and respected Negro leaders
in Christendom. Jimmie represents your political posture
on the racial issues of today and will be making a na-
tional tour this year with the "Sound In Ebony" Music
Concerts to provide community and national platforms from
which to sound a positive and certain message to the nation.
His appearance at the Inauguration will greatly endear
you to the Negro communities and to the Christian Church
nationally. The appearance will also make the concerts
across the nation this year 100% more effective.
Most Respectfully

The Honorable E. Reinecke
Member of Congress
House of Representatives
Washington, D.C.
Dear Congressman Reinecke:
John Ehrlichman has asked me to thank you for Forwarding the
letters of dissent of Carla Garrity and her parents.
Carla's point has some validity. Indeed, Mr. Nixon would
like to invite every person who carried signs and went door
to door for him to the inaugural ceremonies. As you well
know, this is an impossibility.
Vicki Lynne has been invited to the inauguration not because
she carried the sign, or even because she made the sign, but
rather because the sign which she did carry proved to be an
inspiration to Mr. Nixon.
We believe the invitation of Vicki Lynne to the inauguration
will be well received by other hard-working young Nixon sup-
porters. We feel that youngsters everywhere will share the
joy of Vicki Lynne, the 13-year old girl who held her sign up
high where it was seen by the future President.

Mr. President: I wish sincerely to offer my congratulations on your election as

any way easier, I would be privileged to do SO.
A number of years ago,at the dedication of the new science building on our campus,

I made in your dedication speech and following the ceremonies made a further comment to
me personally.
If you have not made the decisions relative to this matter, I would be privileged to
