Address: 79 rue de la Faisanderie Paris 16, France Mailing Address: American Embassy, UNESCO APO New York 09777 -4- COMMENDATIONS By ex-Senator William Benton, Publisher of the Encyclopedia Britannica and U.S Member of the UNESCO Executive Board: "I must say that my opinion of Dr. Wade is so high that I am afraid I sound somewhht effusive. But I mean every word of it. And I am normally a father harsh critic. As you know, I ve had the opportunity to observe literally hundreds of foreign service officers and State Department employees. Because I have spent my life running my own companies and in the judgement of men for various executive posts, I feel more competent to pass judgement than may others -- and thus I do not apologize for my enthusiastic support of Dr. Wade". Also by ex-Senator Benton "I flatly urge that Mr. Fobes be made an ambassador when his five-year term at UNESCO expires I make the same recommendation Mr. Robert Wade, who is presently our Permanent Representative to UNESCO with the rank of Minister. I have known scores of our ambas- sadors and these two men qualify in the top bracket." By Assistant Secretary of State (International Organizations) Joseph J. Sisco "Mr. Wade has continued to serve with great distinction and has represented the United States at the meetings of various sub- sidiary bodies of UNESCO. "I have been most impressed with Mr. Wade's conscientious, intelligent, and enthusiastic approach to his responsibilities at UNESCO. He is a most articulate, dignified, and persuasive spokes- man for the United States. He is practically bilingual in French, which is a tremendous asset in an organization like UNESCO in which French is the predominent language not only among members of the Secretariat but also among the Permanent Representatives of Member States in Paris. "In short, Mr. Wade has done an outstanding job in his position.' -5- By Assistant Secretary of State (Educational and Cultural Affairs) Lucius D. Battle: "Mr. Wade is an attractive, personable man who maintains cordial relations with all his colleagues, whether they be his equals in rank, superiors, or subordinates. He is intense in his drive for efficiency and quality, but tempers this with a sense of humor and of warmth. He is and acts like a mature senior officer in foreign affairs, a position for which he is eminently qualified by education, training, and experience. In addition to other outstanding qualities, he has the quality of tough. ness, which is indispensable for an effective senior executive. "He is, in every sense of the word, an outstanding senior executive in the field of foreign affairs. "Mr. Wade is a very versatile person with broad knowledge and tremendous capacity. He would do very well in political, economic, or other work. He could run a large organization with success." By Hadyn Williams, President of Asian Foundation and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense: "Mr. Wade is a truly outstanding public servant. He is dedicated to his work, loyal beyond question to his superiors, scrupulously faix to his subordinates, intelligent, highly informed in all aspects of his work, enthusiastic, enterprising, cheerful, even-tempered, and wholly reliable. He represents the best in those who have chosen Government as a career." By Karl G. Harr, President of Aerospace Industries Association of America and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense "On the occasion of my departure from the Pentagon, I should like to commend especially the performance of Mr. Robert H. B. Wade as Director of the Office of NSC Affairs (ISA). "During my entire tenure Mr. Wade has operated under my direct supervision in this capacity. In this role he has performed his duties in an outstanding fashion. He is a man of high intelligence, complete dedication and vast experience in this field. -6- He is a tireless and effective worker. He has earned the respect of all those with whom he has come in contact, both within and outside of the Pentagon I consider that, more than any other single individual, Mr Wade has been directly responsible for the sustained high level of performance of the Department of Defense in its dealings with the National Security Council and the National Security Council Planning Board. His energy, devotion to duty and comprehensive knowledge of both the substantive and procedural aspects of this important and sensitive area are unique in my experience. Combining these with his cheerful and cooperative attitude, I deem him to be one of the most valuable and useful civilian employees of the Department of Defense." versity, Metropolita town Association N Y C. 10028 WADSWORTH, 1010; children C.S, exec. dir Copperweld from II. 0 K.) queste (Pitts.) Peter Flanagan Staff of President-Elect Nixon Pierre Hotel Fifth Avenue & Sixty-first Street New York, New York 10021 Dear Peter: Since I have heard of your interest in the selection of high level sub-cabinet posts for the Nixon administration, I would like to recommend Adolph W. Schmidt, who is a Governor of T. Mellon and Sons and a close associate of mine, for one of the highest posts in the Department of State. My first choice would be that he be appointed Ambassador to NATO. As an alternative I would suggest he be made Ambassador to OECD. As you may know, Mr. Schmidt is one of the architects of the concept of "the Atlantic community." He played a major role in the establishment of both The Atlantic Institute and The Atlantic Council of the United States. Further, he has enjoyed the confidence of the financial, political and military leadership of the European community. Particularly significant is the rapport which Mr. Schmidt has with the French leadership, including Charles De Gaulle. Mr. Schmidt's views regarding Soviet intentions are not only sound but entirely consistent with Mr. Nixon's views. As you know, Mr. Schmidt served Mr. Nixon in his campaign as a member of his Foreign Policy Advisory Group and thus is well known to Mr. Nixon. I would hope the President-Elect will give every possible consideration to this appointment. Hoping to see you again soon. Sincerely, Diek HUGH SCOTT room 2 EUGENE S. COWEN PENNSYLVANIA ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT EDITH V. SKINNER United States Senate EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT WASHINGTON, D.C. 20510 CAL November 19, 1968 Honorable Robert H. Finch Thirty-Ninth Floor Pierre Hotel New York, New York Dear Bob: I know that you know Adolph Schmidt and I am more than pleased that he would consider making his remarkable talents available to the new Administration. He would be an immense asset. With best regard, Sincerely, High Hugh Scott U. S. Senator Enclosure T.Mellon and Lons Mellon-Square Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15230 November 13, 1968. The Honorable Hugh Scott 44 Hillcrest Avenue Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 190018 Dear Hugh: It was good to talk with you today, and I appreciate your sympathetic reaction to my proposal. For some twenty years I have been working to prevent another war through closer unity and cooperation among the Atlantic democ- racies, but always through outside organizations. I feel that the time and situation may have arrived when I can make a greater contribution from the inside. Hence, my desire to make this known to Mr. Nixon or his representative who will be handling the foreign affairs field. Before doing anything, however, I wanted first to check with you. I have been making quarterly trips to Europe since 1960, pri- marily in behalf of the Atlantic Institute, and this activity has brought me in contact with most of the NATO leadership, and also with leading citizens and government officials from the NATO countries. My experience has been rather unique and I believe I could be useful in such a post as U. S. Representative to NATO. I am enclosing two copies of a personal history statement, and will keep you advised of any further developments which may occur after my return from Europe. With every good wish, Sincerely, adolph A. W. Schmidt AWS pgm Encl.
