MEMORANDUM TO: Dr. Walter Tkash
FROM
: Dwight Chapin
SUBJECT
: Vitamin Supplements for the President-Elect
On January 10, 1969 a Mr. Rhodifer - Vitamin Products
Company of Dallas, Texas - called to see if Mr. Nixon wished
to continue receiving the vitamin supplements while he is at
the White House. Mr. Rhodifer supplied the President-Elect
with certain vitamins during the campaign in 1960, while he
was Vice-President and also during this campaign. Mr. Nixon
has had conversations with Mr. Rhodifer and evidently has told
Mr. Rhodifer how pheased he was with the way he felt despite the
stress and strain of campaigning as a result of taking these
vitamin supplements.
Mr. Rhodifer can be reached at 214-298-1417. He will not
forward the vitamins to the White House until he hears from us.
His address is: 9103 Highway 67 South
Dallas, Texas 75216.
February 13, 1969
Thursday - 9:45 a.m.
MR. PRESIDENT:
Bebe called to make the following
suggestion:
-
It might be a good idea to
have Mrs. Nixon go down to
Florida and check over the
remaining decorating details
o
on the house.
-
She could go down for a half-
day - or take Tricia and stay
a day or so.

RE: The President's Pledge of 000 to the Mississippi Telethon
As you are aware, the President asked that a $1,000 be given to
the Mississippi telethon which was held last Sunday night and he
stated that he would underwrite the effort. I leave this matter
in your hands for the follow-through and issue of the check.

TELEPHONE CALL
SECRETARY WALTER HICKEL
RECOMMENDED BY: John Whitaker and Harry Dent
REASON:
On the flight to the Redwoods, the President asked Secretary
Hickel to visit with former President Johnson regarding the
subject of Congressman George Bush running for the Senate
from Texas. Additionally, the President asked Secretary
Hickel to seund out former Governor Commally on his intention
to run for the Senate from Texas.
Secretary Hickel plans to see both former President Johnson and
former Governor Connally around October 15. Hickel has asked
Whitaker to request the President to call him for advice before
he goes to Texas.
TALKING POINTS:
1.
Secretary Hickel should encourage Connally not to run
against Yarberough in the Primary and try to convince
Commally and former President Johnson that George
Bush has a chance.
2.
Secretary Hickel should talk to Bush to get any favorable
information Bush can give him on his chances of winning,
since Connally and Johnson are probably convinced that
Texas would never send two Republican Senators to
Washington.
Hickel should transmit any favorable information Bush
can give him on his chances of winning to Johnson and
Commally.

RE:
Julie's Graduation
As I mentioned to you the other day. the Secretary of
Smith College has asked for guidance concerning the
President's participation at the graduation of Julie to be
held Sunday, May 31, in Northampton.
I have talked to Julie and she has asked that we let the
College know that her parents will not be coming at Julie's
request. Julie has said that she does not want them to come
because she is afraid that there will be some unpleasantness.
Julie feels it is much better for us to be open and above
heard on this and just say that the family will not be there.

MEMORANDUM FOR MR. STEPHEN B. BULL
FROM:
DWIGHT L. CHAPIN
The President's Aunt Edith is at a Rest Home at 4768 Palm Avenue,
Riverside, California.
( File attached)
Could I please have both the driving times from here to Riverside
and also the helicoptering times?
I am thinking that perhaps the President could go over there
some afternoon or morning next welk and visit his Aunt. At
the same time, he could walk down the street in Riverside and
talk to some of the citizens. We should put this together in a
recommendation form to Haldeman stating the times and asking
whether or not the President would want to go visit her some
time next week?
August 12, 1970
Dear Miss Goeske:
Thank you for your thoughtful and under-
standing letter suggesting the President
visit bis Aunt Edith at the Rest Home is
California. He has had this very much in
mind each time be has been at the Western
White House, but other responsibilities
have made it impossible. He is hopeful
it will work out the latter part of this
month when he returns to California.

MEMORANDUM FOR MR. LARRY HIGBY
FROM:
DWIGHT L. CHAPIN
RE:
President's Fire Insurance
Ned Sullivan's company in New York has the fire insurance on the
President's house. Rose called this morning to say that Ned
Sullivan's secretary. Mary Mitchell had called and that she
wanted to take care of any problems or matters concerning the
fire which the President had last night. Ned is out of town but
his partner Mr. George Gorham is available in New York.
It is Rose's suggestion than an appraiser come out immediately
--prior to the place's getting completely cleaned up -- so that they
can get the best estimate possible. I will leave this in your hands.

MEMORANDUM FOR:
FROM:
SUBJECT:
Senator Goldwater's office called yesterday about a request of the
Phoenix Art Museum to borrow two Frank Reed Whiteside water
colors which apparently are owned personally by the President.
The Phoenix Museum is having an exhibition of Whiteside's work
for the full meath of January in Phoenix.
If permission is received, the Museum will of course pay for the
shipping and have the paintings properly and adequately insured.
I took the call simply because Miss Withey of Senator Goldwater's
office said she had already been transferred four times to various
other offices in the White House.

MEMORANDUM FOR:
MR. CHAPIN
HIGH PRIORITY
MR. PETERSMEYER
I need some help urgently on a hot project. Both Tricia and Julie
are interested in full-time employment and the President would
like me to work something out for them. The real question what
is it that they can do.
Income is not a factor - the President will pay them himself SO
that they can work at whatever they do as volunteers. They
can't work for the government, or for the Nixon Foundation. They
could work for a private person or a company if it were not one of
the news media.
Both of them are interested in history and the possibility of working
for the Nixon Foundation but being paid by the President would be
one approach - that is working in the preparation of papers,
documentaries, etc.
Other thoughts are handling Presidential mail, something at the USIA,
something in television, but not for the networks, some research
area, etc. As you know, they are both very good with people and could
function well in any personal contact type of assignment but the
problem is figuring out what that can be.
Pshallitm
Maybe they should just go back to the Special Tours, etc. I don't know.
would appreciate your thoughts on this by the end of the day since I
have to talk with Julie about it tomorrow.

WASHINGTON
July 21, 1972
DWIGHT:
Will you please check out the feasibility of doing what
the President suggests here and give it back to Bob.
Obviously, there is no need to say that this is something
the President has raised but simply to explore the
feasibility of the idea.

July 20, 1972
MEMORANDUM FOR BOB HALDEMAN
FROM THE PRESIDENT Pm
A suggestion has been made that David might say
a word at the convention after the tribute to his Grandfather.
Some thought it would be political. However, I think it would
be very appropriate for him to talk about his Grandather.
I would like you to see what can be done to work this
out.

MEMORANDUM FOR THE STAFF SECRETARY
FROM: JEB MAGRUDER
SUBJECT: Items for Nixon Libraries - Action Memorandum P758
Meetings with USIA personnel and with Carol Harford of
Mr. Garment's staff have brought the conclusion that the
Hong Kong Nixon Library and the Bogota Nixon School are
both very much identified with the President. The attached
memoranda examine in depth all that has been none with
respect to those locations.
In addition to the actions taken, each school and library also
have the following items: complete biographies of the Pres-
ident; official and candid photographs provide regularly upon
request to the White House photo office; projectors with films
on the President; an tape libraries to which are sent tapes
including the President's speeches.
USLA policy is that schools and libraries bearing the President's
name are to be given special, ongoing attention. It might be a
good idea to reassert that policy in a request to Frank Shakespeare.
Such a request should include the suggestion that such schools
and libraries keep their photo and film libraries up-to-date on
coverage of the President. This is necessary since films and
photographs are usually sent only on the initiative of a request
from the school or library.
All items above are currently being funded from USLA sources
and will continue to be. But beyond the items already there, and
the aforementioned suggestions, it is believed that inditional items
mi :ht result in a type of "overkill" with negative results.
2
As for the Richard Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, it is our belief
that the subject of appropriate items should be a prime topic of
discussion at a meeting of the Richard Nixon Foundation. It is
clear for many reasons that any items which go to this particular
library will have to be funded by private funds, i.e., the funds
of the Richard Nixon Foundation. However, a prime object of
the funding should be directed to suitable items for the library.
Following are some suggestions on items for the Yorba Linda
Library:
Many of the personal items which the President has
received as gifts or mementos ought to Le placed in
the library with suitable explanatory tags.
Appropriate tapes and films of the Presidency should
be mandatory items, and should be given prominent
attention.
Finally, I would suggest that one theme would be to
emphasize the President's California roots. This
could be done with annual photos of the President from
birth through the present. Each photo of the President
might be matched against a period scene from
California, e.g., Yorba Linda, Whittier and other
areas of Southern California. The end result would
be showing the President returning to his roots --
the source of his political career.
Since the President's political comeback is also one of historical
importance in twentieth century politics, I would suggest a major
portion of the library be given over to a study of the comeback
as a classic in American politics.
