Writ
December 16 1968
Dear Mr Haldeman:
Lay we ask your assistance in arranging the
proper and courteous way of making a call upon Er
Richard Nixon during his hollday stay at Key biacayns?
The following circumstances may be helpful. Ten
years ago while Kr Nixon was visiting key Biecayne, it
was my pleasure to mcet him and to introduce our two
children, along with friends, to the then Vice-Fresident.
The Vice-Preeident was most graclous to us and the
children were thrilled to meet him. Thue for the past
ten years whenever Mr Nixon has been in Toledo we have
been able to at least say hello briefly, except in
October last because the children were in college. We
always mention Key Biscayne and look forward to sometime
seeing him again in Florida. Perhaps this la the time.
We will be visiting there over the holidaye Our
son David, now a Senior at Principia College and daughter
Suean, a Freshman at Adrian College, would love to eay
Lello to the Preeident-lect and to pay our reepects to
this great man.
Would an Informal brief call be possible anytime
between Christmas and New Year's Day. We will be
staying at Irelani's Inn Lodge in Fort Lauderdals and
could arrange the visit anytime convenient to Mr Nixon.
The children have always wished they m ght mest
Kay
ar Nixon's daughters and perhaps that might be possible
this time.

Dear Dwight:
Congratulations on your appointment as a Special
Assistant to the President. You certainly must look
forward to an exciting and challenging four to eight
years in the White Honse.
I nnderstand that you are handling, among other
things, the political advance assignments for RN. As
you know, 1 have a great interest in that area, having
been involved since early in the primary stage of the
campaign. I would like very much to remain a part of
the team during the administration, and would greatly
appreciate any help you may be able to offer in that
regard. I would strongly prefer to be a part of the
White House staff rather than being lost somewhere in
the bnreauacracy!
Let me know what I can do for you. Again, my
congratulations to you and the best of luck. Sce you
in Washington for the Inauguration.
Regards,
Pal

RE:
Mr. Jim Parker
As I mentioned to you earlier today, my father-in-lew has brought
to my attention the name of & person who you might wish to consider
for a position in the DEW Administration. His - is Jim Parker,

Bank of America, Trust Department. His responsibilities include
administering 1500 people and too to three billion dollars worth
of anay. Mr. Parker is " years old; be is leaving the Bank on
his and soward (this is due to some political mansuvering within
the Bank of America.)
My father-in-law, John Bouland, made it clear that Mr. Parker is
not looking for & position in the new Administration. Mr. Parker
has been characterised M a goods organizer and administrator. Be
has very good judgems, an make decisions; be is an innovator
and very, very tough. Be has been in the banking business over
since the last World Mar.
It was falt that Mr. Parker might be utilized for one year,
perhage for a year on & task force, or maybe for scare permenent
position in government.
It is most important that any contact with Mr. Parker be held in
the strictist of confidence. If you wish to find out more inform-
tion concerning him or make arrangments to talk with him directly,
please contact my father-in-law, Mr. John 9. Houland ut (805) 963-1466.
I also know Mr. Parker as a very personable and high quality
individual. However, I cannot comment on his skills as they relate
to the field of banking.

Since then I have received a letter from the President-Elect
requesting the submission of names of individuals who could well

Dear Mr. Chapin:
This is somewhet belated but we want to express our joy over the election
and Republican victory.
Knowing your close contact with the Presidemb-Elect, we have a proposi-
tion we would like you to present to him personally. We realize he would
make the final decision on thia. We have been commissioned by the Prank-
lin Mint of Philadelphia to handle this medallion project. We ere sending
you herewith two samples to show you the exquisite die work, also the unique
1
way the medallion is packaged for presentation so that it shows both sides.
We are referring to the silver medallion. Medallions can be struck in
nickel silvar, sterling or solid gold as desired, if quality would be a
consideration. The insert can be worded as desired and ready at any time
for presentation.
I are elso enclosing a picture of plaster cast. Franklin Mint has modeled
the President-Elect with lettering they suggest but is subject to change,
1f desired. Think the sculptor has done a superb job. The Mint suggests
using the Presidential Seal on the reverse side of the medallion.
You understand, of course, this will be exclusively for the use of the
President-Elect and is different from the medallion the government will
strike as is the custom.
I'm hoping interest will be shown in this project. If so, Mr. Eroest
Lilley of the Pranklin Mint would come to Washington and work out all
details. We trust this will be put in tha propar channels for consid-
eration.

We have received a reply from Mr. Chapin that President-

Dear Dwight,
I'm sure you are deeply involved in the myriad problems of the
transition and quite busy. Needless to say I envy you. I'm really
sorry that I was not able to be of any assistance to the effort. I
was awarded a Fulbright grant for graduate study in law and govern-
ment and left for Helsinki, Finland immediately following the Calif-
ornia Bar Examination. During the fall I followed the campaign as
closely as possible, watching the returns on a special hook-up in the
Embassy, but still felt isolated and somewhat useless.
I am returning home for Christmas and am getting married while
home. On the way to Los Angeles I will be stopping over in New York on
Thursday, December 12. I realize that you are extremely busy at this
time and probably committed for lunch; if however you are free I would
enjoy very much getting together with you. I'll give you a call on
Thursday morning and, if you have a few free moments or if you are not
busy for lunch, I'd like to hear about the election and what all of you
are going to be doing.
I'll call you the morning of the 12th and hope we can get together.

Thought I would register my applause, along with that of
other former JWT associates, for a fine job on the campaign.
The victory probably is noise enough. And I suspect your
efforts during the campaign are only a foreshadow of what's
to come.
It's a mightly long way from Scotkins and Scotties.
The Army "borrowed" me from JWT late in 1966, and I've been

RE:
THE BOYS' CLUBS CF AMERICA DINNER
Monday, December 9, 1968, Mr. Nixon will attend the
National Board Meeting or the Boys' Clubs of America
at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. The President-Elect
will arrive at approximately 6:30 PM and will stay
through the evening departing around 10:00 PM. The
meeting 1s a closed affair; however, 1t will be
possible to arrange to have pictures taken by the
stills and reels. Your people should contact Mr. Ed
Stapleton, Director of Public Information. At the
Boys' Club office, telephone 684-4400. My suggestion
would be that the pictures be taken between 6:45 and
7:00 during the reception period or at 7:00 PM sharp
right after the men have been seated for dinner.
On this same evening At the waddorf, there will be a
dinner ealuting Winston Churchill which will he held
in the Grand Ballroom. There is a very good chance
that Mr. Nixon will do a drop-by for the Churchill
Dinner and this would take place at approximately
8:00 PM. The detaile on the Churchill drop-by are
incomplete at this time and the matter should only be
held as a possibility.
Thank you.

I realize that Mr. Nixon is going to be swamped and

As you probably know, Du Page County gave most of
the margin to Mr. Nixon which put him over in
Illinois, This is the second most Republican
county in the United States surpassed only by
Orange County, California.
All of the top Republican leaders support our work
and have been here many times for meetings and
documentary film showings.
I have known Dick Nixon for many yeare: I have been
with him at the Amerlcan Legion Convention where
I have served on the National Americanism and
National Security Committees: I have ridden in the
car between Pat and him in the back seat in California
where both of my sisters and their families live, and
where they work for him from the precinct level up.
Elmer Hoffman, our former United States Congressman
from the district, former President of the Illinois
Sheriffs' Association, twice Treasurer of the State
of Illinois, and Chairman of the Du Page Republican
Central Committee is one of our most ardent supporters
and has introduced me from the platform for major
addresses time and time again.
I want to see you because I know I can never encroach
on Mr. Nixon's valuable time telling him about the
magnificent operation we have here: which Mr. Nixon
would never have to apologize for dedicating, as
President of the United States.
Our files are second only to the files of the FBI
in size and importance. The J. B. Matthews Memorial
Research Library, completed laet May, now houses
these files for maximum security.
I spent one and one-half hours with W. Clement Stone
and his staff the other day. Mr. Stone 18 intrigued
with our work and 1 would like to have him on the
committee to welcome Mr. Nixon at the dedication of
the Library at the President's convenience,

Dear Doris -
NOV 30
I had intended finishing your last letter, but just mailed it to you as it was
As I wrote you before, I had been working very hard campaigning and working for
'Richard Nixon'. I went to the campaign Headquarters every day with the exception
of Fridays and Saturdays - sometimes onee, twice and three times a day. I loved
doing it, then the minute I got home, I turned on either my TV or radio to get
every bit of news about him and read almost everything that was printed. I love
that whole family. On election day I was out at the headquarters - and we were
all so worried for feat that Nixon would lose, due to the way that Humphrey seemed
to be gaining. I walked the floor - was slmost crying, it seemed at that time BO
hopeless. I rushed home and sat before my TV from 5:30 PM until 4 AM. I did not
even bother having any supper. Every once in a while, I would dash out into the
kitchen, swallow a mouthful of milk - then went back again. I had made up a chart
of each state with the number of electoral votes it carried and every time a state
was counted, would mark down either a 'N', 'H' or 'W'. In that way I could tell how
Nixon was faring. When New York went for Humphrey, my heart almost stopped beating.
When Penna. went for Humphrey - I had to take oxygen. I could have cried. I kept
praying that the Good Lord would not let us down - oh how I prayed, At 4 e'clock I
went to bed, but could not sleep. I was up again at 7 AM. Nothing yet.
I sat again (without breakfast) before my TV. The men just kept on talking - but
could not say anything yet. Finally one of the men looked up - said 'there is
something happening'. Then he just shouted 'Illinois is coming in FOR NIXON'.
Doris, I fell down on my knees and just gave thanks. The tears rushed from my eyes -
I was SO thankful. Nixon fad 261 votes - when Illinois came in, that gave him more
than enough (26), which brought him up to 287. Since then Alaska gave him 3 more and
I just recently read that Penna. had so many uncounted votes - that he might be able
to get the state of Penna - but by now, I am afraid that is out. Nixon knew what he
was doing when he chose Agnew. It was the Southern votes that helped Nixon gain the
election. Nixon - or rather his workers sent me his acceptance speech when he was
nominated. It is in booklet form, something that I will treasure and keep for the
balance of my life. After he has his Inauguration on January 20th, I, with the
leader of our Campaign office are going to Washington to see him. I am thrilled
and am looking forward to it. I do hope and pray that nothing will happen to him.
He is such a wonderful man and is so brainy - if anyone at all can help this country
to her feet again, it is Richard Nixon
After the election I was exhausted. I did not realize how tired I was - but now that
Richard Nixon has been elected, I am so happy. Let us all pray now for our wonderful
President to be.
Hope that everything is going nicely for you Doris, with much love,
angie-

your kind ketter of November 25th, containing your
request for an appointment with the Preaident-Elect

I am sorry to relate that the present de-

you mail your picture, via special handling, to
