SPEAKERS MESSAGE BUREAU
OTHER
APPOINTMENT OFF
I think Dick Nixon will find the testimony of General Trudeeu
before the SISS committee nn interesting bit of refresher reading.
It is Prt of 7 of the hearing S and is attached. His Middle East
comments may be noted. I think that is an issue which will
explode on the domestic front if great care is not used to keep in
within hounds. Never have quiet Americans been 60 restive.
If the new Preeident can got substantial Conse vetive following, he
will be among the great ones. I know of none since Hoover with his
capabilities.

of the campaign. It was very nice to have voted for a
winner in the Presidential election for a change.
Second, my heartiest congratulations to both your-
self and to Dwight for your personal accomplishments and
acheivements. Both of you have come a long way in the few
short years that have elasped since your days at the Sig
House. Lately, I have had occasion to be at the Sig House
on several occasions, and both you and Dwight are the talk
P
of the Brothers.
I read with great interest the newspaper article in
last week's Times, concerning the "talent search" which
the Nixon staff is now conducting. I am very sorry that
I cannot personally do my part as a member of the team
to help in some way make this country a better place to
live.
I can, however, make this strongest of recommendations
as to one of the possible appointments. Mr. Nathaniel J
regards to the possibility of an appointment to a sub-
progine
00
Friedman, Esq., will very shortly be writing to Dwight in
cabinet post. Mr. Friedman is most anxious and desirous
of working with the Attorney General's office.

Mr. Friedman practices in the same specialty as I
do, and we have many mutual friends. I have known him
for some time in that his firm is next door to our offices.
I know Mr. Friedman to be an extremely competent,
hard-working, brilliant young attorney. He is a 1957
graduate from the University of Southern California.
I sincerely feel that a man with the talents of Mr.
Friedman should have a place in our government. I know
he would be an asset.
I hope that Mr. Friedman will be given serious
consideration for an appointment to the Nixon team.

ANSWERED
File
Dear Mr. Chapin:
While having dinner the other night, your close friend,
Terry Lynch, strongly suggested I write you relative
to the lawyer position opening in the new Administration.
Terry felt I might be an asset to the President-Elect,
and of course, I am pleased by his confidence.
My law practice has grown rapidly in the past year, and
it would be with mixed emotions that I would consider an
offer of a position. However, under certain circumstances,
it would be difficult to turn down such an invitation.
Since 1962, I have been in the practice of law in Los
Angeles, emphasizing trial work. District Attorney Evelle
Younger knows me well and I would suggest his name as a
reference.
If, after reading this letter, and from any investigation
you care to undertake, you'd care to further discuss the
matter, I would be pleased to talk at length with the
appropriate person or persons.
Very truly yours,
NATHANIEL J. FRIEDMAN

Dear Dwight:
I just wanted to drop a line congratulating our new president on the
greatest victory our country has ever received.
I know how you must feel after so many months of tireless work and
energy but, as we all know, it sure was worth it.
I guess our contributions through the Commitment '68 program were of
great value, much more SQ than we originally understood.
I know that in 1972 we will be ready to go again, except that then we
will be even more knowledgeable in the field of political campaigning.
Needless to say, we learned a lot with this one.
I'm looking forward to coming to Washington, D.C. carly next year. I
hope to spend maybe a week or so sightseeing. I sure hope that you
will be available for a personal escort.
I want to thank you for the introduction to President Nixon when we
were at Panorama City - that was really a thrill!
As we discussed, if the President's move should come my way, I will be
back to get the wheels going as soon as I receive the green light.
In conclusion, I honestly want to tell you that this whole experience
has been one of the greatest of my life. All the work sure was

Unsought Advice
One would think the Democratic party had wen the
presidentia) election, the way the apeculation and mugges-
tions on whom President-Elect Richard Nixon should
name to his cabinet have been running.
Most of the speculation appears to be emanating from
the liberal wing of the Democratic party, which le sound-
ing off on which Democrats would be acceptable and
which would not. Also, the liberal Dumocrate are being
liberal with their advice on which Republicans are suffi-
ciently liberal to be acceptable.
The basic assumption in all this is that Nixon must form
a coalition government. Sentinel columnist Joseph Alsop
described what the liberals have in mind when he suggest-
ed that Nixon should "try to create a broad spectrum, cen-
ter government, commanding moderate Democratic as
well as moderate Republican support." Moderate, it should
be noted, Is a code word for liberal.
Nixon did indeed win with a minority of the total vote,
narrowly edging out Vice-President Hubert Humphrey.
Still, his margin of victory was bigger than that by which
John F. Kennedy nipped him in 1960.
But we don't seem to recall that, when Kennedy was
putting together his cabinet, the liberals were 50 all-fired
anxious that the conservatives be represented in the Ken-
nedy government. In fact, the conservatives have been
rather completely frozen out of the administration for the
last eight years.
Nixon's fundamental pledge was to provide the nation
with new leadership. He would be going beck on that
pledge at the outset if he picks some of the old politicians
and tired liberale being recommended by the election los-
ers.

First, let me offer 10 you and to oll of the others who contributed so much to the
recent great victory my wormest praise and congratulations. You must still be
trying to cotch up on your rest but, as you know oll too well, this very probably
was our lost chance and the success with which your efforts were crowned should

were deluged with hundreds, or even thousands, of those at this stage of the game
and I have no intention of adding to your burden, My main reason for writing is
simply to congratulate all of you and to say that, strictly as a volunteer, am
available to you at any and all times between now and inauguration day, as well
as thereafter, to take on any chores in which you think E might be helpful.
I sincerely regret the fact that I was not called upon during the period after my
return from Europe last Fall, but judging by the fact that so many phone colls went
unanswered and unreturned, I assume everyone involved was being kept busy an
practically a raund-the-clock basis.

Dear Dwight,
Congradulations to Mr. Nixon, you, and the entire staff!
You all deserve it!
The vote in the Seventh District was Nixon 78,337; Humphrey
61,938; Wallace 12,933. The past eighteen month's work
seems to have paid off for us here too. J find it hard to
let down.
It is much easier to find Nixon friends now than it was a
year ago. I am sure you have noticed it also. Congressman
O' Konski and I had lunch today both agreed this is wonderful
chance to start building a political power base. Certainly,
with so many new found friends we must not forget the loyal
old ones:
