TELEPHONE CALL
(Suggested by Bud Wilkinson)
Wilkinson
BudA called rmw and said:
"Raymond Gary, our former Governor, has not come out
publicly for Nixon even though he is supporting him.
"RN talked to him prior to the convention a couple of
times. I feel that a phone call to him now asking how things
are going -- about the Wallace situation, etc. would be good.
I think RN should suggest that thís would be a great time to
come out publicly.
"He lives in Madill, Oklahoma.

RN call
memo to Robert Haldeman
From Buchanan
Not all press are hostile. Last night when we delivered
the NATO statement I had a talk with J. TerHorst who seems to
be an active collaborate in the Nixon cause. Extremely bright.
He said that RN might weel win the support of the Detroit News
for which he works by a properly timed phone call to Peter Clark
the President
as well as to Martin Hayden. Clark is a young
guy of thirty six or so, extremely sharp. They have been for Lyndon
but Terhosrt says they would be extremely receptive to an RN phone
cal.;. Suggest calling both when they are in the area. I have
a copy of Clark's speech to a graduating class of which he is
quite proud, which I might draft of note of praise for from PN
very briefing saying RN had been given it by an aid, and RN might
borrow some lines or ideas from it. You might mention to RN about
Terhorst that we seem to have found one just man in Gomorrah.

News Summary -- Monday, September 30, 1968
Scripps-Howard newspapers today endorsed RN
for President.
An editorial in one of the 17 newspapers in the
group says: "We see no other real choice in 1968 than
Nixon." Scripps-Howard papers endorsed LBJ for re-election
in 1964.
They had supported Nixon over JFK in 1960 and
Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956. Editorial continues:
"The country is beset by crime and disorder and
because of these things, woeful injustices. Only Richard
Nixon can bring a change in orderly fashion."

As on occasions in the past I am assisting President-
elect Nixon with his schedule. I wish to acknowledge
your kind invitation of October 24th, via Rose Mary
Woods, to attend the NSE Convention in Cleveland in
May.
I wish I were writing to say he could definitely accept,
but for the time being it will have to be kep on a pend-

with you if there is any possibility that President-elect
Nixon can be with you for your Annual Convention.
I know President-elect Nixon would want me to thank

Dear Rose Mary:
Knowing you are "swamped" these days and traveling on the
airplane constantly, I apologize for taking any of your time.
I decided to do it, however, because of the importance of
what's on my mind.
You will remember the great experience when both Pat and
Dick came to the closing banquet of the annual convention of
National Sales Executives in Buffalo in May, 1960. I was
President then and introduced Dick with the prediction that
were the NSE convention taking place a year later, it would
be my pleasure and duty to simply say, "Ladies and Gentle-
men, The President of The United States. "
Ever since, among those who know of my friendship with Dick,
it is suggested that "your prediction was accurate, but you
were eight years early
I am not as sophisticated in the ways of politics as some, but
from the exposure I do have with varied segments of people,
there is no question that we're on the way to a resounding
victory. Consequently, would you tuck away somewhere, my
early plea for President Nixon to be with us again for the
Annual Convention of NSE, now re-named "Sales and Marketing
Executives. "
The dates are May 11-12-13-14, 1969 in Cleveland, Ohio. We
will make the program flexible to fit the convenience of the

President. His presence at the opening session Sunday evening,
May 11; the kick-off of the program Monday morning, May 12;
any one of the noon luncheons; or any dinner would be tremen-
dous, and we would build around it. The President of SME
this year is W. W. Clements, Executive Vice President of
Dr. Pepper in Dallas. I would chair whatever session
President Nixon could attend, and we'd have a great time
harking back to the night in Buffalo.
Sales executives of the key business organizations throughout
the country are solid Nixon supporters and constitute an
excellent platform from which a new President of the United
States can project a major message. Cleveland is easily and
quickly reached from Washington and the dates are flexible.
Would you please pass this along to Mr. Nixon at some oppor-
tune time and give me the benefit of his, and your, reactions.
Thanks so much. We all are exerting every effort in the
home stretch with complete confidence we will win. As I
told Dick when he was here in Philadelphia just prior to the
convention, my only apprehension was his getting tangled up
in debates with HHH. He has handled this in superb fashion,
and I am convinced he has him right where we want him!
Very best personal regards.

I have been asked by President-elect Eddie Barker of the Radio-Tele-

Annual Conference to be held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles,
November 19 - 23. We discussed this in your suite in Atlanta, May 31,

is to support their invitation.
I understand this is the voice for radio-tv news directors throughout the

Committee, Mobile County

Dear Mr. Coleman:
During the demanding transition period between the two
Administrations, I am taking the liberty of answering
your kind invitation to President-elect Nixon to visit
the city of Mobile.
Because of President-elect Nixon's heavy duties in
initiating his Administration it is not possible for him
to make a firm commitment at this time. However, we
will keep your invitation on a pending basis until we can
work out an itinerary for his pos-lanugural schedule.
I know President-elect Nixon would want me to include
with this letter his appreciation for your interest in
having him, as well as to send you his best wishes.
Sincerely,
John C. Whitaker

Dear Mr. President:
Reference is made to my letter of October 29th
addressed to Ray Blies, copy of which is attached.
I am not unmindful of the fact that the vote in
Alabama does not indicate strong support of the national
ticket nor give us any call upon your time but I am
convinced that the vecuus left by the Wallace effort gives
us the best opportunity that we have had in many a year to
reverse this condition. I noticed in the merning paper
that Governor John Bell Williams has indicated an inclination
toward the Republican Party and before George Wallace is
able to pick himself off the floor and rebuild his empire
I would like to see the Republican Party move decisively
in this area.
I cannot express too strongly my belief that a visit
from you to Mobile expressing your concern for the Southern
problems and reiterating your desire to unite this part of
the country with the rest of the country would give the
Party the boost and the shot in the arm that it needs to
move out decisively. I suggest the Mobile area because it
would pull from Alabama, Mississippi and Florida and quite

frankly it will be from this area that any ambitious
Republican effort will be forthcoming to revitalize the

copy of the letter to the Vice-President.

Our old friend Loren Berry has
been in touch with Admiral Mott about
the possibility of Dick's dropping in on

MEMORANDUM FOR LOU NICHOLS:
As you know, the members of our industry are supporters of Dick
Nixon in every way we can be helpful. Loren Berry, for instance, has
given unstintingly of his time, money and effort to help Dick. Here is
an eighty year old man who after a prostate operation sat up in bed on
the third day and said, "I have to get up out of this bed so I can help
Dick get elected President. " And he did.
Another great helper is Paul Henson; President of United
Utilities, and virtually his entire Board of Directors. Les Warner, the
President of General Telephone and Electronics, which operates in
thirty-four states, is another great Nixon supporter, as are all of his
regional presidents. John Brown Cook, the President of Whitney-Blake
and Reliable Electric, is another, and I could name several hundred more.
But you know all of these people having broken bread with them so many
times.
We are hopeful, and are working to the end that Dick Nixon will
be our next President. In the interregnum between his election and
inauguration, it so happens that the United States Independent Telephone
Association will be holding its annual convention in Miami Beach
(December 8-11). We already have a commitment from Senator Howard
Baker to address our first General Session on Monday, December 9.
On Wednesday, December 11, we will have our wind-up session in the
Ballroom at the Fontainebleau, a place incidentally where Dick Nixon
has spoken many times. The only person we have on the program that
day is one of America's great professional speakers, Bill Gove - also
a Nixon supporter.
We would hope that Dick would give consideration to appearing
at the General Session on Wednesday, but if it is more convenient for
him to appear at the General Session on Monday afternoon or at a luncheon
we are having at the Convention Center on Tuesday, we would not care.
We also recognize that he doesn't need to have any prepared speech to
talk to us. He'd be amongst friends and supporters.
- 2 -
Loren Berry will be in residence in Miami Beach at that time at
the Surf Club and if Dick didn't want to stay in a suite at the Fontainebleau
we could arrange for him to stay either at the Surf Club or at the Bath Club.
On the other hand, I know he has his own friends and facilities in Miami
Beach and he might just be down there relaxing at this time anyway. If
he wants us to arrange a deep sea fishing trip for him, John Brown Cook
happens to have fishing boats at his disposal.
We realize, Lou, this is a long shot but we have great affection
for the President elect and we would like to have him enlist us in his
army of helpers - helpers he will need to carry on his program when
elected.
