Mr. Jack Caulfield

Dear Jack:
You never need to apologize for writing, and I was happy to
get your letter of January 3rd.
I know you haven't received any notification regarding the chief
marshal position and this, of course, is due to the fact that none
of these appointments have been settled yet, so don't give up hope.
As you know, I have no real connection with any of the appointment
process and the marshal appointments are all, of course, up to
John Mitchell in his role as Attorney General. I am sure John is
aware of your interest and your qualifications and will do everything
he can.
I will certainly pass on to the State Department people your interest
in the position of Director of Security at AID, and if there is any
possibility there we will give them the details on your qualifications.
It was good to hear from you and I trust something will work out
soon.
Cordially,

Dear Bob:
It' S been a long time, but perhaps you remember the tall blond,
Marge Crawford, who was Cornelia Plank' S girl Friday in the
4-A ad campaign you headed for United Way.
I' m far removed from the ad business since my marriage three
years ago to a social psychologist. We are devoting all of our
time and creativity toward devising ways people can make their
world more liveable.
We hope you and the incoming President will give serious con-
sideration to the enclosed proposal for achieving a lasting, peaceful
resolution to the conflict in Vietnam. The type of "No-Lose"
encounters we propose could begin immediately as a supplement
to the Paris negotiations and could favorably affect their progress
and outcome.
We hope you will find a way to implement a series of "No-Lose"
encounters to end this dreadful war. We would certainly be
honored to participate in any way that would be helpful.

Mr. H. R. Haldeman

Dear Mr. Haldeman:
I am writing you at the specific request of Mr. Herbert Klein
and the indirect request of President-Elect Nixon.
While at Mr. Nixon's last meeting with the National Board of
the Boys' Clubs of American in New York on December 9,
Mr. Nixon called me aside and asked whether or not I would
be available for some assignments during his administration.
I told him I could not take any permanent assignment in
government and that, while I appreciated his mentioning
it to me, I did not seek any job. He then asked whether
or not I would be available for specific short-term citizen
type assignments in intelligence work or foreign visitation
work. I explained to him that I would, of course, try my
very best to accommodate him in response to any request
he ever made of me. He closed the conversation by stating
that I should be sure that someone at his Headquarters knew
of my availability for such assignments. Two days later,
on December 11, I was in Detroit with a group of Publishers
and Herb Klein was our guest. I had breakfast with him and
I told him of my conversation with Mr. Nixon and asked him
to advise me whom I should write. He suggested that I write
you directly.

Accordingly this is to advise you that if you have need of a
citizen in connection with any task force or study group or
inspection group which would require one-time short-term
assignment I would be glad to help in any way I can. If, for
example, there is to be a Hoover Commission to examine
organization of government, and if it needs citizen representation,
I believe my background would qualify me for such an assignment.
So that you have my background in your file, I list some of
my professional experience:
Gruaduate Duke University 1943
Served for three years in United States Navy on
destroyer U.S. S. Pillsbury in sub killer group.
Ended duty as Commanding Officer of ship with
rank of Lieutenant.
Graduated University of Virginia Law School 1948
In active practice of law from 1948 - 1965. Served
as President of both Cincinnati and Ohio State Bar
Associations. While practicing law specialized
in corporation law, corporation finance, antitrust
law and newspaper law.
1965 - President and Publisher of The Cincinnati
Enquirer
1967 - President of The Cincinnati Reds
During the recent campaign I served as pre-comvention Chairman
of the Ohio Nixon for President Committee and post-convention
I served as Chairman of the Ohio United Citizens for Nixon-Agnew
Committee. In addition, I served as Chairman of the Southern
Ohio $1, 000 a plate dinner.

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
December 19, 1968
Mr. William T. Knox
Vice President
McGraw-Hill, Inc.
330 West 42nd Street
New York, New York 10036
Dear Mr. Knox:
Mr. Nixon's office has been kind enough to forward to me your
letter of November 13, addressed to Mr. Lincoln, containing
your suggestions in regard to the science office in the new
Administration.
I hope you will not be too disappointed that I was selected to
be the Science Advisor rather than some of the very wonderful
people who were suggested in your letter. Several of these
people are good friends of mine and I shall want to be working
very closely with them. As you know, Mike Ference is on the
President's Science Advisory Committee and I shall certainly be
depending on him very heavily--as I shall also be depending on
my good old friend Dr. Edwin Land.
I appreciate your suggestions in regard to the structure of that
office, and I have been giving thought to this matter myself for
I agree with you that the multiple responsibilities which have
devolved upon the Special Assistant are too great for one man to
carry alone. I am looking for a strong deputy and I hope that I
can persuade Mr. Nixon (and, if necessary, the Congress) to have
at least one, and possibly two, additional top level men in the
office. I shall keep your good suggestions in mind as I take
office and study the problems.
I am aware of the fact that science advisors have, in the past,
been chosen from the science community and from the university
community, and I guess I follow in that tradition. However, I
am keenly aware of the fact that a large segment of the problems
which come into that office are in the various fields of tech-
nology rather than basic science. I will try to give these

adequate attention and will try to bring in people who are
knowledgeable in technology areas, and especially in
industrial technology.

OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON
December 18, 1968
Dear Bob,
Just a brief note to make two points:
1) I very much appreciated Jay Wilkinson's call last week
that you had received my package and that it apparently
filled the bill. As Jay might have mentioned to you,
he remembered that we had discussed some Republican
matters last July when I was still in the Anaheim area
it is indeed a small world.
2) The major reason for this note, Bob, is to make you
aware of my party background and activities; since the
information you will be sent from the Commission on
White House Fellows will not include it.
A) My wife Joan and I were GOP Co-Chairmen of the City
of Rosemead, Calif. in 1960 (RN's old 25th Congressional
District). Despite a 4 to 1 democratic advantage, we
carried the city for the 1st time
both in presidential
and congressional races.
B) In the 1962 Gubernatorial race, we were very active
in bolstering a city-wide precinct organization which
was suffering from a serious case of right wing-itus."
C) Joan was very active over the years with Mrs. (Hanna)
Nixon at luncheons etc. and was, until our departure to
Washington, GOP City Chairman of Placentia, California.
She worked very closely with Pat Hitt in California
and we have continued a close association with Pat since
our arrival here.

OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT
WASHINGTON
Finally, I would make the point that the President-elect
graciously supported me in the competition for the White
House Fellows Program last spring with a communication to
Douglas Dillon (then Chairman of the Commission) on my behalf.
That's about it, Bob, but I would like to close with the
following thought It is a great comfort to know that com-
mencing on January 20, 1969, the UCLA Betas and Phi Delts will
be on the same side in the nation's biggest water bag fight!
Until then
Best personal regards,
Hudton

Dear Sir,
as a member of the mores Heights Brong Diet
Republican Party I would like to oxpress my views
on certain essues and noted for m. my on with
the confidence that he will restry our moral
and integrity image in our country which is in sael
need of requir. We must no longer tolerate
crim to bind our citizins is fear in my
neighbord alone I hear a constast flow
of tragedy that happen to my veryboy and
I some home every night wondering when th
statistics will prick me as its next victum. One
of it first orders of business should be to restre respect
for law, for property and for life. That should be
our first order y business It is written in the Bibb "a House
Devidep against itself cannot stand" How can we depend
our way of life to others in the would if we are tom aport
+ aproil in our very home Why send our best to fight
just to leave behind must and enrapt rejects to they our cities.
(ones)
It seems givt illogacal to me and certificate not right
On a matter I another sort and also
of much importance is our Postal system which
is in very bad shape and certainly needs
the attention and appointment of the best man
available and shouldnot be made a political plum
m. Theodore Kappel who wrote the best and
must through study of it postal system that
any one has done is my chair for to position but
any one who is appointed to the post hald he
some who will have th moral courage to improve costs,
remove politics from the post Office and increase a sadly
demoralyzed postal employee A respect for his job
and its relationship to it community. I am in favor
of creating a Public Corp. out of th Present absolite
Postal System. Instilling a merit system; Better working
invoicement, allowing th Post office to set it own mail
rate, salones strongs negotiatos would yo a long way
toward making it Port office first class member
of our society. In. Kappel is of it few individual who
have a tramendors job in This study The odds against change
and th oppositions of there who we the Prt after a me lorge
subsidy for it incompetent and a domam for potional at any
price well be great. But not to change it in my.
opining world be a disastes expecially and its
means for creating a better Postal engo is within
our abilities, I would like to thank you for
any consideration or attention you my give
my views on these matters. I wish Previder Elect
Mix on the best of luck and my full support as
he will need all of us behind him and the best
men he can find in every branch of govt
fruth challenges that face us in timent for
years
