Dear Carl:
Thank you very mucy for your letter of November

I very much appreciate your offer of assistance and
I can assure you that we can use every bit of help we can get.
Although we are pretty much involved at this point
in the basic organizational structure of the campaign, we will
be ready to get under way full-scale shortly after the first of
the year and I will be contacting you at that time.to see where
you would like to devote your efforts.
In the meantime, thanks very much again, and best
regards.

The printer of these stamp sheets and folders has 125,000
still on hand from last year, and these can probably be purchased very
inexpensively if we want them.
It is my feeling that we don't want them unless we get them
free, but the decision should be made on this and the printer contacted
if we want to inquire regarding prices. Fred Haffner has the information

Staff Personnel
I interviewed Joanne Rollins on November 21 regarding a
position with the campaign staff.
She is currently Field Director for Congressman H. Allen Smith
and can be reached at CItrus 2-3146 Her job is basically part-time
and she is currently earning $450 a month. She wants more for a full-
time campaign job and is asking $600. She is divorced and has no
personal commitments and no objection to working long hours.
She worked for Baus and Ross last year in the Los Angeles
Nixon Headquarters and at that time handled campaign materials ship-
ping to headquarters maintenance of inventories etc. I am told by a
number of people that she did an outstanding job and is very easy to
work with.
X - HRH - Action Miscellaner fous
Subj: Public Relations Director
She has broadened her experience in her work with Smith handling
public relations, itinerary, writing of releases and news material etc.
She is interested basically in the public relations phases of the
campaign and feels she would be well qualified to handle campaign materials,
speakers bureau, or general work in the public relations division. She
also has familiarity with schedule planning and would be good there.
HRH;ss
She is available to us only if Smith approves it, and probably we
could get her starting January 4 when he returns to Washington.

You asked that I summarize the conditions under
which John Whitaker would agree to serve on the campaign staff.
He wants assurance of the following.
1. A position of comparable responsibility and stature
to that which he presently holds, that he can be
assured of returning to at the end of the campaign.
This assignment must be in Washington, D.C.

The letter from Stanley Freeman in Beverly Hills is self-

he is a professional fund raiser, and is interested in retaining his

Television Availability - San Jose
Bob Lindsey informs me that after an appearance by Pat
Brown on KNTV in San Jose, a local half-hour show, he demanded
equal time. The station said that because Brown was not a candidate
they were not required to provide equal time. However, they would
be most happy to offer RN the opportunity to appear on their "Report"
show any Tuesday evening at his convenience.
This is a 30-minute program from 3:00-7:30 PM on Tuesday
where the guest is interviewed by the News Director of the station and
local press people. The station reaches approximately 800, 000 people

Dear Newt:
I have your letter of October 24 to Bob Finch
regarding Supervisor Don Clausen of Del Norte County.
I had hoped that it might be possible for us to
arrange a meeting with Clausen while we were in San Francisco
for the November 13 dinner, as you suggested.
As you can well imagine from a quick scanning of
the papers, the schedule ended up so heavily committed that
we were hard-put to complete just the basic events, and there
was no opportunity for any appointments at all.
We will certainly try to work out something for
Clausen in Los Angeles, but it will have to be a little later

since Dick is concentrating all his efforts, at this point, to
completion of the writing commitment he has in connection
with his book to be published next year.
I would appreciate it if you would let me know when

Dear Otis:
Your recollection regarding my statement in your
office that I was not a candidate for Nixon's campaign manager
is completely accurate. I told Dick before he declared his
candidacy that I would not be available for any fulltime position
in the campaign because of the commitments I had made to
J. Walter Thompson Company.
As we worked on the development of a plan for cam-
paign organisation, after his announcement, I realized I could
probably be of some help in the campaign and was able to work
out a satisfactory arrangement and replacement, on a temporary
basis, at Thompson, and so here I am. I appreciate your con-
gratulations and kind works, and can only say that I share your
feeling that this campaign must result in victory.
