Dear Dick:
This is just a note to thank you for your
letter of November 3 and to tell you how much I appreci-
ate your congratulations on my appointment as Dick Nixon's
campaign manager.
Needless to say, we have a long and tough
campaign ahead of us, and it's going to require a tre-
mendous effort on the part of all of us who are involved.
Your good wishes are, therefore, greatly appreciated.
I plan to be calling upon you for substantial

assistance in the coming months and, in the meantime, I
x-Offers to hebp
am taking the liberty of adding your name to our mailing
list.
Congrats-Camp.
Very best personal regards.
Sincerely,

Dear Len:
You had asked that I give you the date of the
Mike Cowles Dinner in New York. It is February 7.
I understand the office has sent you the sum-
mary on the California polls which you also wanted, and I
assume that you and Bob Finch got together while he was
in New York and that he has filled you in on the background
of the situation on Scribner's California speaking tour.
It was very pleasant to see you while we were
Folder
in New York and I am glad we had the opportunity to have
a couple of good chats. I trust the occasion will repeat
itself soon. In the meantime, best regards.
Sincerely
Bor

Dear Elton:
It is with a great deal of regret that I herewith submit
my resignation from the Board of Directors of the Milline Club.
As I am sure you and the other members of the Board
will understand, the project which I have taken on in managing the
Nimon campaign for governor is going to preclude any and all out-
side activities for the next twelve menths.
I especially regret having to resign at this time since
I had been hoping that I was going to be able to take a more active
part in Milline activities this fall since, as you know, I missed a

I am very much aware of the ground work that is being

I think your suggestion of a luncheon of leaders, business-

You were very kind to write on November 3 and

It was certainly a pleasure to have another visit to

Note Re San Francisco Trip
Dan London at the St. Francis should get a good letter
since the Nixon Suite was complimentary on this trip. In addition,
there was a lovely bouquet of chrysanthemums in fall colors, a
baby vanda orchid for Mrs. Nixon, a bar service of scotch, bourbon
and beer and two baskets of flowers and candy in the room--all from
London.
RM wanted to be sure that Paul Davies, P. O. Box 760,
San Jose, got a specially good letter thanking him for the Finance
Group Luncheon, Monday Noon, and for assuming the Chairmanship
of the Northern California Nixon Finance Committee.
Joe Martin, Cap Weinberger and Ruth Watson should all
get letters thanking them for all of the work they did in arranging the
many details of the very intricate and intensive two-day schedule and
recognising the tremendous amount of work that was involved on their
part in order to include so much activity in such a short period of
time. Gean Dewey, the Executive Secretary of the State Committee
office in San Francisco should also get a note along this line plus
thanking her for taking care of the telephone watch during the period
of the visit at the hotel.
RN's driver throughout the visit was Howard Obrentz at
78 Wavecrest Drive, Daly City. He has driven the Nixons on other
Subj:Memos to Loie re thank you letters
visits and did so again as a volunteer and should get a good letter.
The lists of those who attended the various group meetings,
receptions and dinners are being supplied by Ruth-Watson, and all
those who attended should be thanked for coming--especially to groups
who attended on Sunday and for taking time out of the beautiful weekend
to come into the Hotel to meet with RN. Also, I think those who were
asked to come, but did not, should probably get a letter saying he was
sorry they weren't able to meet with us but hopes that he will have a
chance to see them on a future trip to San Francisco. These letters
should be pretty non-commital cause, in some cases, we did not know
the reason they did not attend.
HRH:ss
Sandy can give you the information on the Newspaper Publisher
meetings and, who in addition to the Publishers were in attendance.
I don't know whether RN will want to write them or not but I would
rather think that he would.
Sandy can also give you the dope on Wanda Remy who's
Television Show RN appeared on in a film spot, and I definitely think
that she should get a letter because the Boss was quite impressed
with her.
Loie, in general, the group should be handled as follows -
The various groups who came in on Sunday afternoon should be thanked
as outlined above. The group who came to the cocktail party-reception,
Sunday evening, should just get letters saying it was good to see them
again. The group at the Sunday night dinner should be thanked for
coming to this first strategy session and for their willinguess to serve
in the campaign, and RN should say that he is expecting to be meeting
with them again in the future as the campaign progresses, and will look
forward to receiving their thoughts and recommendations. The group
at the finance luncheon on Monday should be thanked for their willingness
to serve on the Nixon Finance Committee for Northern California. The
members of the Dinner Committee should get the standard letter for
this type of service.
You will note a considerable amount of duplication, in that
some of these people will appear on two or three lists instead of just
one. I guess they should get letters acknowledging all of their various
forms of participation.

Dear Melba:
Thank you very much for your letter regarding Jim Kreiger
and the water situation.
I certainly agree with you that water will be the major
issue in the campaign and it will be very helpful to get
Mr. Kreiger's views and especially his analysis of what
Brown's pitch will be.
Dick is going to set up a Task Force on the water issue
and I think the first step would be to ask for
Mr. Kreiger's suggestions as to who, in addition to
himself, he feels might be valuable to have on this Task
Force. Would you like to 45k his for this information,
or would you like me to get in touch with his directive
I will be glad to handle it however you think best.
I very much appreciate the offer of a place to get away
from it all, and especially the removal of the telephones.
You may find us taking you up on it before too long.
Thanks very much for writing.
Love,

Dear Mr. Joods:
I note in the December issue of CADLE liews that you, as
President of CADLE, have been asked to contact the
candidates for Gov ernor of the two major parties
requesting information on their plans for the Department.
I understand that your members have 3 number of though hts
regarding action or inaction on the part of the Governor
of California over the years, and I would be very much
interested in learning from you what you feel has been
neglected or mishandled in the past, and also what positive
steps you feel would be advisable for the future.
If you are going to be in the Southern California area in
the near future, perhaps we might be able to get together
to discuss this. If this is not possible, I would suggest
that you meet with one of our Northern California people
and would be glad to set this up at your convenience.
would you be so kind as to dive as an indication of your
current plans and any thoughts you wish to express at this
point.
Thank you very much.

Dear Mark:
Thank you very much for the picture and the generous inscrip-
tion.
You asked about the whereabouts of the principal members of
the V.P. staff. I an sure you know that Rose Woods is here
in Los Angeles with Dick in his law office. Bob Finch is
also back here in Les Angeles with his old lew firm. Merb
Klein is back at the San Diage Union where he is Editor.
Jim Golden has taken a position with General Mills as a
Washington Representative, and is apparently doing very well
with them.
You were especially interested in Jack Sherwood. Be is
serving out his term with the Secret Service and his retirement
comes up in the spring of 1962. His address is 500 South
Kensington Street, Arlington, Virginia.
Don Hughes seems to be mending rapidly and probably will have
his brace removed quite seen.

there are others, please let me know.

Sorry to be so long in replying to your letter of
November 20.
I have your statement of November 15 for $36. 20
covering expenses in Yakima. Since we have already closed
out the Washington Trip expenses, I wonder if you could submit
this item to Mort Frayn, since that is where the dough must come
from. I am returning your statement herewith.
Any expenses you have in regard to the Portland trip
should be sent to Lowell Paget rather than to us.
The mailing address here and the phone number are
as indicated on this letterhead, and I will be operating out of
this office most of the time.
I was delighted to hear that your friend is weakening a

as to how. 1 will surely keep this in mind and be in touch with
