It was good to see you the other day and I am glad we had the
opportunity to run through some specifics on the book.
We will work with Jack O'Leary on plans for the promotional
activity out here.
I received your wire regarding Dick's appearance in New York
or Washington on publication date and will go over this with
him as SOON as we can get together after his return, and will
let you know the decision.
I also have a letter from you dated February lst regarding
Dick's speaking to the American Booksellers' Association
Convention in Washington. I very much doubt there will be
any possibility of this appearance since our primary election
is on June 5th and Dick of course could not be out of the
state immediately prior to or on that date. 1 also think it
is unlikely he would be able to come east the next day, but
I'll check this.

I understand they do have a plane to take him from Sacramento

Dear Mike:
I have held off a reply to your letter of
January 18th until my plans were
definite.
Although I will be coming to New York
with Dick, it will be necessary for me to
leave before your dinner Wednesday might.
I'm really sorry to miss the event, and
know you and the others will have a wonderful
time.
Kindest regards.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

It is extremely important that all of the above attend since the
purpose of this session will be to clarify and confirm all assignments and
procedures for research, speech material and related matters.
The meeting will probably take an hour to an hour and a half.

Mrs. Maxcy Callahan
Buyer, Book Department
The White House
San Francisco 8, California
Dear Mrs. Callahan:
Thank you very much indeed for
your letter of January 29. Although I cannot at
this time discuss definite plans in connection
with publication of Mr. Nixon's book, he will
appreciate, as do I, your thoughtful suggestion
of an autograph party and reception at The White
House. It will be passed along to those immediately
concerned with this phase of programming.
Meantime, please know we are
very grateful for your thoughtfulness in writing us.
If it appears possible to work something out along
the lines you have suggested, we will certainly
contact you.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

Mr. George W. Vaughan

Dear George:
Many thanks for your note. It appears
the time factor may preclude our writing Oliver Gale.
Actually, George, your suggestion was
purposely held pending initial organization set-up. Too,
there is a very real problem involved in bringing in out-
of-state assistance.
However, this delay in following through
in no way indicates a lack of appreciation on our part; on
the contrary, Dick and I both appreciate your thoughtfulness
in this connection.
Best to you and Jean and I hope our paths
cross soon.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

You were nice to take time to write

and opinions on the meeting last week.
I appreciate too the generous praise
of our staff here, and will certainly pass your

received.

Dear Hank:
It doesn't look too hopeful for
the March 21st invitation to Dick to attend your
"Theatre Night" (Advise and Consent) event. He
already has two trips into the area scheduled in
February and it is extremely doubtful he will be
back in San Francisco at that time.
However, this invitation will
come up for consideration by the Schedule Committee
and you will hear from us more positively just as
quickly as possible.
Hope you will understand what
we are up against in the scheduling area. Many
thanks, and best regards.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman

Mr. Leonard Valiukas, Chairman

Minorities-Nationalties Committee
902 West 34th Street
Los Angeles 7, California
Dear Leonard:
Thank you so very much for your
letter of January 28th.
I want to assure you we are very
much aware of the importance of the nationality groups.
For this reason, and others, it is difficult to have to
tell you Dick has a conflicting meeting to which he has
been committed for some time on Sunday, February 11th.
You know without my saying he would like to be with you,
and we hope, as the campaign progresses, you will keep
us posted on important events like this. We must try to
work something out.
I have asked Norton Norris, our
Contact Director, to get in touch with you regarding
organization among the nationality groups. This is one
of his areas of operation in our campaign and he will be
working with you from here out.
We are really sorry about the
February 11th conflict.
Kindest personal regards.
Sincerely,
H. R. Haldeman
