INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM
Nixon for Governor chron
To:
Date:
From:
Mr. H. C. McClellau
February 1, 1962
Subject:
Mr. H. R. Haldeman
Distribution:
San Diego County Chairman
cc: Mr. H. Kalmbach
Mr. C. Farrington, Jr.
Dear Chad:
This is to confirm information given Herb Kalmbach on the
telephone Tuesday.
During his visit to San Diego on Tuesday, Dick had a private
session with C. Arnholt Smith and Admiral Les Gehres and a man
whose name, 1 believe, is Breitbard.
As a result of this session and an earlier conversation with
Mr. Parkinson (Chairman of Republican Associates), it was agreed
that Gehres would serve as San Diego County Chairman, Smith as
Finance Chairman, and Breitbard as Treasurer.
1 talked with Gehres Wednesday and it has been agreed between
us that no announcement will be made for a short while since Gehres
wishes to firm up organization structure and procedure in advance
of such announcement.
I am asking Charlie Farrington, by copy of this memorandum, to
have the News Bureau obtain complete biographical data on these
gentlemen pending preparation of the announcement.

Dear Phil:
This letter will briefly recap our discussion the other evening regarding
the formation of a key Public Relations Advisory Group.
It is my understanding that you have agreed to head up such a group.
and that you will prepare a list of suggested members for our mutual
consideration prior to making any direct overtures.
It is agreed that this group will net be publicised in any way, and will
be asked to provide advice and counsel on a wide range of campaign
matters relating to all phases of Public Relations, including advertising,
promotion, campaign materials, and strategy.
I have discussed this with Milt Esberg and he has agreed to serve
on the Committee, and was very pleased that you were going to bring
it together.
I think this should be a small group limited to top professionals in the
various areas of Public Relations.
Since Leens Banter has agreed to counsel with the Campaign Committee,
I would suggest that she be asked to join your group. You, Leone
and Milt, plus one or two others should probably do it. at the outset
at least.
I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards.

Honorable Howard J. Thelin
State Capital

Dear Howard:
Thanks very much for your letter of March 19th regarding
Jack Veneman's recommendation that RN visit his District on
April 10th.
I know there is a very strong feeling on Jack's part, and on the part
of some of our Nixon Committee people in Stanislaus County, that
Dick should also visit Turlock while he is in the County. I have
passed this recommendation on to people who are working on the
schedule plans, but personally feel that on this kind of a visit, and
with the limited time available, It would be much more worthwhile
to have one big truly outstanding event in Modesto than to divide
up appearances among several smaller communities. Up to now
we have found this procedure has been extremely worthwhile, and
that when we have made a number of small appearances, the
effect has not been nearly as great. Also, you and Jack should
realize that an extra hour doesn't really accomplish much in
trying to hit two additional towns, since It really isn't enough time
to de It right. As you know, our approach all along has been that
we want to do the best we can with each individual appearance,
rather than just strive for numbers of appearances.
You can certainly assure Jack that Dick will be back in the District
several times, and that OR return visits activities can be planned
in other cities of the county.
Thanks very much for keeping us posted, and best regards.
Sincerely,
